Subject: Nightmare From: Trevor Date: 05 Dec 07 - 10:08 AM We've just discovered that Helen's (my partner of the last thirteen years) grandaughter has cancer. She's eighteen and beautiful. She's been living in Malta for the last six months, been poorly and was taken in to hospital last Friday. Helen flew out on Sunday, there was surgery to take biopsy yesterday, and the specialist has said that we need to get her back to the UK as quickly as possible for treatment ASAP - they're coming home on Friday. From the early descriptions we thought it was going to be Hodgkins but it seems as if its far worse with lumps in her abdomen and bowel. Need prayers, big time.... |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, plea From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 06 Dec 07 - 04:14 AM Trevor, I don't seem to have much positivity left this year, but what I have left I send to you and yours. May she find strength and hope to fight it and may you and yours find the strength and hope to help her and for yourselves to remain strong too. It's a hard battle to fight, but stay close, ask as many questions to those medics as you possibly can (go armed with lists of questions), and don't be afraid to ask for help for yourselves too. There are a few great support groups in the UK. But most of all, talk to each other and take each day as it arrives, each dawn is a new battle, each sunset is a chance to rest and refuel for the next day. But, sieze the day each day. You have my very best wishes and thoughts. EWIS |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Trevor Date: 07 Dec 07 - 09:02 AM Thank you all so much for these thoughts. Hollie arrived back in UK at 3.00 this morning and is going straight in to hospital today for more tests. I'm certain that the positivity in this thread is going to help. Hollie will be getting the treatment she needs. Helen's heart is breaking but she's doing what she can to stay strong for Hollie - she will understand and appreciate what's going on here on the 'cat. I'll keep you all posted - thanks again. XX |
Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, plea From: maeve Date: 07 Dec 07 - 09:08 AM I'm glad she has arrived to your loving care. May all those providing medical care have wisdom and heart to follow the right path for Hollie. maeve |
Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Trevor Date: 18 Dec 07 - 08:25 AM Good news! (I never imagined for one minute that I'd ever think that any news about cancer was good!) Hollie's tests have all come back now and the doctors yesterday confirmed that she has Hodgkins lymphoma but that its not advanced, she has tumours in her neck and chest, its eminently treatable and there's an excellent prognosis. She is desparate to start treatment so she can get back to her life, and it will start just as soon as she's had some ova removed. Thank you all so much for your messages - they've helped enormously, particularly Helen. Christmas is back on!! |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Dave'sWife Date: 18 Dec 07 - 06:53 PM Trevor - you and Hollie and helen have my prayers as well. A man who was like a father to me, Comic Artist Gil Kane suffered through the same disease twice. The good news is, he conquered it once and lived many years more before it relapsed. Hollie is so much younger and stronger and treatments have advanced since then. I'll continue to pray for her strength and complete recovery. |
Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Flash Company Date: 19 Dec 07 - 11:38 AM Trevor.... I'm late picking up on this one, so the improvement in the situation has come in before I did. Hodgkins is nasty, but better than the original 'lumps in the abdomen' thing sounded. A guy I worked with had it about 5 years ago, and was looking fit as a flea the last time I saw him, about six months ago. S & I send our best wishes to you all, and especially the patient! Brian Q |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Trevor Date: 09 Jan 08 - 08:17 AM An update. The day after I posted my last message with good news we heard from the doctors that they wanted to have another look at Hollie because they were worried about some kind of shadow on an X-ray. There were more tests and, although they didn't show anything specific to worry about they decided that they needed to review the proposals for treatment. They have decided to start the treatment straight away without removing any ova, and it is going to be chemo after all. She went and chose her wig on Wednesday of last week and had her first dose of treatment on Thursday. She seemed OK on Thursday and Friday but the sickness kicked in over the weekend and she has been really poorly. She's due to be getting her treatment every fortnight and in the meantime has moved to Shropshire so that Helen can look after her between sessions. Hollie's boyfriend and his mum came from Malta for Christmas, spent most of the time in Essex but did come up to Shropshire for new year - it was good to see Hollie and meet Nick. He's now gone back to Malta but is coming back in the next couple of weeks, hopefully to get a job to tide them over before they can get back to Malta. I printed off the posts and gave them to Hollie - she was so moved and she has said she wants to respond so maybe you'll see her name on a post some time. Helen is worn out but glad to be back home, and coping. Thanks for all the wishes - we'll keep you posted. |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Trevor Date: 30 Jun 08 - 08:19 AM Gosh, this time has flown past! I just wanted to let those of you who were interested know that, after a traumatic, painful difficult six months, it seems that Hollie has shaken of the baddies. She's had her last dose of chemotherapy and, this week, has her final blood tests to check that its done the job - her oncologist is confident that it has. She's lost most of her hair and she's been ill for most of her treatment. Her boyfriend from Malta, Nick, came over and spent the best part of the period living at Helen's. He went back to Malta a couple of weeks ago, exhausted by it all but he's been fantastic support. He's aged 19 and has the maturity of someone twice his age. Hollie was distraught at him leaving but understands what a support he's been and how he needed a break - they've been in contact and seem to have patched things up. She has already boooked her ticket back to Malta and Helen will be going with her to help her settle in. Helen was so impressed with the way Hollie was treated that she's organised a charity concert to raise funds for the haematology unit at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital. Rapsquillion (one of Shropshire's finest folk bands!) are topping the bill and there's a raffle - just in case anyone's interested! Thank you to everyone who responded to the original post, when it felt like our hearts were being ripped out. Hollie kept the print out of the mails with her and I know they helped her, as well as Helen and me. And, in the meantime, my son and his partner have presented me with a granddaughter (Lily, who was introduced to the world last week), so I'd better start worrying! Phew, made it! |

Subject: RE: Nightmare - Good thoughts/prayers needed, please From: Bee Date: 30 Jun 08 - 04:35 PM Good news! I would trust what the oncologist says - they are usually cagey beasts, so he must believe she really is on her way to a long healthy life. May it be so! And congrats on the new little one, as well. |
