Lord, forgive me for this, but this is really an emergency. I hope my fellow 'Catters can help me out. I have to play on Mother's Day (this Sunday here in the States)at an Irish Dance show. The father of the Instructor, a man from Down, has asked me to sing "A Mothers Love's A Blessing". I have never heard it, but I would love to grant his request, as it seems appropos. Do any of you know the lyrics and tune? Or perhaps a group that has recorded it so I can get a tape or something. Obviously time is of the essence, but if I could get the lyrics and tune/chords by Saturday morning, I could do a simple arrangement for Sunday afternoon.

Thanks a million, my friends.

All the best,

Big Mick

Ah Sweet Jazus and his beloved mither. The Fair Alison has graced the unworthy life of this sorely deluded Irish lad and I am forever in her debt. Actually I did a Forum search before I asked, but it kept timing out.

I am forever in your debt, Fair One. And by the way, what's your sign? Wait a minute..............there is a whole thread of great pickup lines I was reading. I am going to run over to it and get some ammo...........Don't go anywhere, Alison, I will be right back. *****LOL****

Thanks for the help, and All the best,

Mick

Let me tell you all the wonders of technology. I had to play a solo gig in Lansing, Michigan today. Two world class Irish Dancers, the Quinns, asked me to provide 3 ten minute breaks during the show. Because their mother was going to be their, they asked me to perform this song. I had never heard it and posted this thread asking for the help. The fair Alison responds and we chat on ICQ. After she calls me "a big lump of an eejit" and questions how a fella who claims to be as Irish as I do could not know this song, she links me to Mick Brackens' lyrics (Thanks, Mick). Then she sends me a ten minute mediaring file in which she plays it on the piano, sings it to me (with the voice of an angel..........a little shameless sucking up there for those that didn't recognize it) and plays it and calls out the guitar chords. All this done real time with a person on the other side of the world. I spend a half hour or so arranging it to suit me, and performed it today. Mrs. Quinn comes up to me afterward with tears in her eyes and gives me a huge hug and thanks me. Ain't techno wonderful? And I did give credit to The Mudcat, Mick and The Fair Alison before I performed it. This technology has many uses for those of us that perform. Pretty cool, eh? You can send up to 15 minute recordings on the Net. It is not the best quality, but totally adequate.

Alison, I really appreciate the help. And I am working on that pickup line. LOL

Mick

True story:
Back in the mists of prehistory, say the 1980s and even into the '90s, there was a lovely place in downtown Austin called The Colorado Street Cafe. The guy who ran it knew a bunch of folks who dabbled in "traditional" music for the love of it. He OKed sessions several nights a week, combination instrumental/vocal. One of the regulars knew this song and taught it to the rest of us. Fast Forward to the time when "they" had made a movie of McCourt's "Angela's Ashes". We got invites to the Austin Sneak Preview of same. Noone had heard of the movie at the time. We(hubby and I, same as used to go to Colorado Street) went, didn't recognize anyone else in the audience, watched the movie, gasped when the song started, and clutched hands til our knuckles turned white as we listened. OK, no biggy, kinda shaggy-dog story. So you tell one......                Tw

Here is what alison and I worked out all those years ago:

A Mother's Love Is A Blessing (T. P. Keenan)

      C         G         C             F                              C
An Irish boy was leaving, Leaving his native home,
F                               C             D7                                     G7
Crossing the broad Atlantic, Once more he wished to roam,
       C                G                C                            F                         C
And as he was leaving his mother, who was standing on the quay,
         F                         C                Am            F          G          C
She threw her arms around his waist, and this to him did say, (Chorus)

    C             G            C                   F                            C
A mother's love's a blessing, no matter where you roam,
F                                  C                   D7                               G7
Keep her while she's living, you'll miss her when she's gone,
C             G       C                              F                        C
Love her as in childhood, though feeble, old and grey,
                  F                      C            Am       F                     G                   C
For you'll never miss a mother's love, till she's buried beneath the clay

         C         G             C                   F                        C
And as the years go onwards, I'll settle down in life,
          F                   C                               D7                     G7
And choose a nice young colleen, and take her for my wife,
         C         G                  C                F                           C
And as the babes grow older, and climb around my knee,
      F                        C                Am                     F            G             C
I'll teach them the very same lesson, that my mother taught to me. (Chorus )
