Subject: ADDPOP: Political World (Bob Dylan) From: bobad Date: 02 Feb 08 - 10:57 PM Political World (Bob Dylan) We live in a political world, Love don't have any place. We're living in times where men commit crimes And crime don't have a face We live in a political world, Icicles hanging down, Wedding bells ring and angels sing, clouds cover up the ground. We live in a political world, Wisdom is thrown into jail, It rots in a cell, is misguided as hell Leaving no one to pick up a trail. We live in a political world Where mercy walks the plank, Life is in mirrors, death disappears Up the steps into the nearest bank. We live in a political world Where courage is a thing of the past Houses are haunted, children are unwanted The next day could be your last. We live in a political world. The one we can see and can feel But there's no one to check, it's all a stacked deck, We all know for sure that it's real. We live in a political world In the cities of lonesome fear, Little by little you turn in the middle But you're never why you're here. We live in a political world Under the microscope, You can travel anywhere and hang yourself there You always got more than enough rope. We live in a political world Turning and a'thrashing about, As soon as you're awake, you're trained to take What looks like the easy way out. We live in a political world Where peace is not welcome at all, It's turned away from the door to wander some more Or put up against the wall. We live in apolitical world Everything is hers or his, Climb into the frame and shout God's name But you're never sure what it is. Copyright © 1989 Special Rider Music |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Feb 08 - 12:58 AM Tom, you should be ashamed of yourself [grin]. But as for political discussion threads, I've received complaints lately that we've had too many of them that are very slight variations on the same subject. Seems to me that when one person keeps starting threads instead of participating in ongoing discussions, those new threads are often much more propaganda than discussion. The person doesn't really care to exchange ideas - the intent is to flood and overwhelm all others with the poster's own point of view. And that's not quite fair to the rest of us. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: autolycus Date: 03 Feb 08 - 08:36 AM Joe, can you do some combining to simplify, and maybe implicitly discourage the practice you describe? Innit. Ivor |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Feb 08 - 08:58 AM After years of US-bashing for the sh***y Presidential choice NOT made 8 years ago by Mudcatters, but foisted upon us ALL by those who voted him in, US Catters are naturally acutely interested in the present opportunity to dump the party that spawned him, and the proliferatio of threads IMO is an effort to keep the discussions pointed to narrow sub-sub-sub-topics within the broader discussion, and I don't see a problem with that. If people like a particular sub-sub-sub-topic, they will post. If not, they won't. If that's too much politics, may I respectfully suggest that if a thread is not of interest, don't open it and, if you do, don't get so preoccupied with it that you perpetuate it simply by posting in it. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:03 AM PS, I just opened the first 10 politically-related threads in the list this AM, and only 3 were started by the same person. Were there more, that got closed or combined? ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:57 AM Maybe when people start up a new thread that's on the same subject as an existing one the etiquette ought to be that they explain why. That happens sometimes, but it get's left out too often. There often is a perfectly good reason - there is some aspect of the topic which would otherwise get in the way of a discussion, but which deserves exploring. And if there's a good reason it deserves to be explained. (It gets confusing when several discussions are being carried on in the same thread - for example one about electoral procedures, one about policies, one about media coverage, one about the previous election...) ........................ Here's a collection of treads. |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Feb 08 - 02:30 PM I lost my treads there... |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Feb 08 - 04:47 PM You can call it "proliferatio" if you like. Personally, I don't play semantic games. I'll continue calling it "antiabortionratio", thank you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: Rowan Date: 03 Feb 08 - 04:56 PM Being from Oz, I normally don't contribute to US or UK political threads out of politeness and I confess their titles usually flag their partisanship so thoroughly that I suspect I couldn't contribute meaningfully anyway. It's hard enough staying positive about the Oz politics I can contribute to. But a friend's email signature file may interest you. Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you. Pericles (430 BC) Cheers, Rowan |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: wysiwyg Date: 03 Feb 08 - 07:14 PM OK: ^n Happy? :~) I dunno how to make the proofreaders' mark to show it should connect to the word where it was left off-- not the insertion caret, another mark. Like an equals sign but rounded. Like a pair of parens but horizontal. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Political Threads From: GUEST,Peace Date: 04 Feb 08 - 10:52 AM Interesting article from CBCNews (on-line): Fifteen per cent of Canadians would give up their ballot in Canada's next federal election to vote in the U.S. election, a new poll co-sponsored by the CBC has found. The poll, done by the Canadian polling company Environics, asked 2,001 Canadians over the age of 15 questions about how they perceive their role, and Canada's role, in the world. Forty-six per cent of those surveyed in January by telephone said it matters a great deal to Canada who wins the November 2008 U.S. presidential election. Another 35 per cent said it mattered somewhat, while only eight per cent said it doesn't matter at all. Keith Neuman of Environics told CBCNews.ca that the fact that nearly one in six Canadians said they would vote in the American election over the Canadian election shows just how important they think the United States is. "What they're saying is that in the whole scheme of things, the race will have impact on the world and Canada," said Neuman, Environic's group vice-president, public affairs. "The U.S. is a big global superpower and it carries a lot of weight." |
