I have a popular culture question: In what movie (or was it more than one?) did a group of teenagers say "Let's put on our own show! We've got everything we need!"

I have impressions that this may have had something to do with "Andy Hardy", and may have involved Mickey Rooney and/or Judy Garland. But these impressions are not the same thing as actual knowledge.

Google was no help.

The "Little Rascals" (a/k/a "Our Gang") did it in several of their movies.

So far as films go it was indeed a staple plot device in the Andy Hardy series, but in books I'd say Jane Austin's Mansfield Park may have been the first time it happened. (Didn't work out too well though...)

"Babes in Arms" with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland (1938 I think)

It was definitely the very young Mickey Rooney, as Andy Hardy. Our Gang also did put on some shows, but that line was pure Andy. IF memory serves, of course.

So: It might be from "Babes in Arms", it might be from one or more of the "Andy Hardy" series, and it was also picked up by the Little Rascals. Maybe.

Thank you to everyone who responded!

Don't quit, the late returns aren't in yet!

My subconscious was quite sure it was "Babes in Arms" but if you must have a citation, here ya go.

Actually, it was quite a regular thing (not only with young kids...) in 1930's movies - even British ones.

A fan of early British Movies...
