I recently caught an old one I had missed up to now, "Talk of the Town". Average plot, good dialogue but what a chance to hear 3 such
distinct voices playing off each other: Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Ronald (could listen to him read the phonebook) Colman. "Goya's Ghosts" wasn't bad but I haven't seen anything I'd give 4 Stars lately. I'm waiting for "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire" to be available on Netflix.
   I have heard about a movie in the works that has me filled with anticiption. A Three Stooges movie with Johnny Depp as Moe, and its even rumored that Sean Penn might be interested in the role of Larry Fein. This could be an instant classic.

I just watched The Loss of Nameless Things, on Hulu. One of of the films from the PBS series Independent Lens.

It's a documentary about Oakley Hall, III (I think III -maybe he was IV.)   A brilliant playright who founded Lexington Conservatory Theater, and who suffered a severe head injury at age 29 that stopped him cold. Or not.

Fascinating.   I recommend it.

Elegy with Ben Kingsley...very sexy, very sad, very funny, and good.

Just watched the docu A Very British Gangster...not much to say except the tenderness I felt for the young boys already so tough and matter-of-fact about their lives and one of them so talented as a singer. To hear them talk about their dreams amidst their mafia-like lives was a poignant juxtaposition, yet, not the only one in this superbly done docu.

Last movies seen:
The Battle of Algiers (still the best movie about terrorism and urban warfare ever). I hadn't seen it in ten years, but Criterion has a new print of it, and it is still unbelievably good.

L'Atalante. Another film I hadn't seen in years, and really still maybe the most extraordinarily mythic film ever made.

Out Of The Past. One of the best of the film noirs, which I had heard about vaguely, but never ever seen. Just a total knockout. With Jane Greer in her one truly, truly, truly, truly great part.

Well, I loved Bill Maher's slam at religion, though I don't suppose it will ever make wide release. I don't agree with him on some points, but found it very provocative.

"I'll be there" written and directed by Craig Ferguson, starring himself and some other great actors plus "introducing" Charlotte Church. It was such a fun and endearing movie!

Watched three AS (advanced screeners)over the weekend, quantum of solace, Henry Poole is here and Taken.

"Taken" is great, Liam Neeson played the part of his life in it. He plays an ex governmeny agent who comes out of retirement after his daughter is abducted in Paris. He seems to have lost so much weight. This film has to be on top of your list.

"Henry Poole is here" was so enjoyable, Owen Wilson's brother played the lead role. The face of Christ appears on his wall of his home and he tries to get rid of it. A great family film.

"Quantum of Solace" how the hell can they call this Bond, no gadgets, no women (one) and no one liners. There is also a guy in the role that no more fits bill than I would. Bond as we know it is over.

"Eastern Promises", is a pretty good flick. We watched it last night. The end left something to be desired, and it's pretty gruesome in parts, but it held your interest.

Paschendaele (sic), the Paul Grosse film about Canadians in the Great War Battle. A very good film for the most part, although the love story is a bit too much, still, a film worth seeing.

I doubt any of you will be breaking down the doors of your local theater to see the last movie we saw in a theater. It was "An American Carol." A tongue-in-cheek movie jabbing liberals. I'd like to say it was a good movie, but it wasn't. Oh, it took the jabs, alright, but there were very few funny scenes and it wasn't well written or acted.

So why did the silly tw*t only produce the gun AFTER he had been beaten up? The meatpackers could easily have killed or disabled him him (and probably would have in real life).

"The Fall" -- a beautiful film. Paralyzed stuntman in 30's LA tells tall tales to little girl in hospital with him; girl's imagination provides visuals. Most incredible cinematography I've seen in years.

I've seen lots of good movies lately, but nothing recent. I confine my movies to TCM, and the film history class I take...Wednesday we're going to discuss Columbia pictures of the mid-late '30s.

We've already had the pre-code stuff in which women had the strong roles...quite a switch from the last half century. And certainly a far cry from what passes for stories today.

And I wouldn't give you piss for 95% of those who call themselves actors today.

I saw "Das Leben der Anderen-2 ("Lives of Others") too and I agree it was excellent. It was so convincing to see the frighteningly scrupulous Stasi guy was sincere in his beliefs. He was a sort of Robespierre - incorruptable, yet capable of causing untold misery. You hate him at the beginning and come out of it respecting his integrity two hours later. That's a clever film.
There are some German films around at the moment, which are dealing with their big issues very sensitively and intelligently.
We went to see "The Baader Meinhof Complex" on Friday, which was every bit as good at Neil Ascherson described it in his Guardian review. It is a believable and unsentimental telling of the story of the terrorist group (and it's successors), which wreaked carnage in Germany in the seventies and early eighties. I believe the makers tried very hard to be objective in the way they told the story. Nobody was made to look a complete monster, although it would take a special person to like a lout like Andreas Baader. Sadly, a lot of facts about that series of catastrophes are never likely to emerge, but the makers showed admirable restraint.

Y'know, the thing about Brideshead Revisited is that I don'tremember any ofthat stuff beingthe focus of the book -- I remember the focus of the book being the End of Empire, as symbolized by this family too hidebound for its (or its members) own good.

Sabastian didn't come across nearly as swishy, but naybe I need to go reread it.

Oh, Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist was a must for us Young People's Librarians -- fun, but they changed a bit too much from the book. Which will now fly off the shelves.

An Israeli movie called, I think, Close to Home at the college this weekend. grim.

Every once in a while one will come across a show that just makes you go WOW! I just watched The Lives of Others, and it is a very amazing thought provoking film. The ending was perfect. I thought the guy would go up and talk to him, but no...he didn't.

Was it me or does the guy who play Wiesler resemble Kevin Spacey? Also, I do not think it was a coincidence that the film initially took place in 1984, when they started spying on the author.

Saw 'In Bruges' on the flight up to Shanghai a couple of weeks back. Great movie, very black comedy and some great lines. Not rerally rated Colin Farrell before but in this he is excellent.

Also watched 'Death at a Funeral' and nearly wet myself.

Start wearing purple for me now!":-) Oddly enough, Elijah Wood as Jonathan was perfect but really irritated me. I think it was the character more than the actor, though. I loved Hutz's part best of all, as Alex, and yes, Samudovsky was excellent as the grandfather, too. Thanks, again! My 12 year old daughter took me to see the new 'Batman' film.   Not at all what I expected, no 'BIFF' 'KERPOW'   'SPLAT', no Robin and VERY unpleasantly violent. Not to mention what happens to that bloke's face!

She loved it.

I watched a good movie last night called Reign O'er Me, with Don Chedle and Adam Sandler....It wasn't the usual Sandler affair, where he is the obnoxious 12 year old in an adult body. He played a dentist who basically just shut down, refusing to acknowledge even his grief, when his wife and daughters are killed on 11 September. The movie takes place years after the event, and Don Cheadle is an old college rommate who runs into him, and rekindles their old friendship.
