Subject: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Bill D Date: 20 Feb 08 - 05:38 PM I couldn't figure out how to title this. Do YOU have a LOT of MP3 files...or .wav files...or MIDI files? I do, so I was very interested when someone posted in a newsgroup about a little program which will index files......"one small executable file, no installation required >- does not write anything to the registry >- creates indexes for only the directories you select >- you can define separate databases and decide which one to search >later >- indexing (and search of course) are incredibly fast >- boolean search >- built in graphic files preview >- very simple and comfortable to use" It is indeed amazing, even though it says it is 'Alpha'.... it indexed my 'songs' folder & sub-folders- 10,000 items - in 33 seconds...then searched on a word and displayed dozens of items in a second...then 'previewed'...meaning played a song or showed an image or text for a selected item. It does not replace regular media players, but it allows you to locate stuff VERY quickly, and to play individual items thru Windows Media. Note: this is not just for music, ...it will index any part of your PC, but it is an obvious item for large collections of music. You can have a number of individual databases and search all...or only a single one..etc. (I have main 'songs' collection on C drive, and Child Ballads on an external drive) http://www.indexyourfiles.com/ |

Subject: RE: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Geoff the Duck Date: 21 Feb 08 - 05:24 AM Just tried it and I'm impressed by the speed and simplicity. Just by doing a search of "jpg" I can see how many temporary internet files of pictures have been dumped on my hard drive. I am currently listening to a music track using the inbuilt "preview" player function. It was quicker and easier than actually opening a music player. It looks like you've found me another indispensible programme, Bill. Thanks. Quack! Geoff. |

Subject: RE: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Bill D Date: 21 Feb 08 - 01:50 PM Glad it works for you, Geoff! It's quite a gadget. ,,,and I hadn't even though of using it to locate orphan JPGs. But then, I haven't yet indexed my entire drive. I want to do it in specific pieces. |

Subject: RE: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Geoff the Duck Date: 21 Feb 08 - 03:42 PM Quite frankly, it wasn't something I actually thought of doing, just one of the first things I noticed. I haven't checked, but assume those particular files will disappear when I do an "Empty temp / Temporary internet files" cleanup. Quack! GtD. |

Subject: RE: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Bill D Date: 21 Feb 08 - 06:25 PM Well, Geoff, I just indexed my "documents and settings" folder...with all the sub-folders...and found myriads of things I'd never have noticed...even in temp.folders! There were leftover thumbnails from an old graphics program that never told me it was MAKING thumbnails. And it exposed some areas of 'temp' that are VERY tricky to find in other ways. The file indexer found everything.... Check out these 2 screen captures, using 2 different file managers. (I used the 2nd, because the 1st didn't even show the 'content.IE5' folder...and all those 'coded' folders have similar lists of crap inside them...some of it 2 years old!) I've been doing a lot of deleting. Microsoft makes no attempt to explain why stuff I accessed ONLY using Opera browser ends up as detritus in an IE temp folder. a blank area what is really in that area |

Subject: RE: Tech: How to index and play music on a PC! From: Bill D Date: 22 Feb 08 - 10:53 AM I might have, and it's a good item...but this allows instant re-ordering searches by key-words...limited anyway you wish....and will delete from the program. |
