Well I never did like those "BEST" threads.

There have been so many performances that I have enjoyed, who can say which was BEST. So this is a thread for those, not necessarily best, but which you would not have missed for anything.

Post as many times as you like for any performances that you have enjoyed.

One particular performance I remember was of 'Susan of DT' singing a ballad. I don't even remember what the ballad was, but her singing was wonderful. I look forward to hearing her sing again soon.

Never did see Cyril Tawney. But I do recall (I think it was him) a 45 with him singing on it way back in the Fifties.

Anne Hills, Cindy Mangsen, and Priscilla Herd in concert, my wife sitting next to me, blending in with them so well she could just as well have been on stage with them. Me sitting there with tears of joy trickling.

Turley Richardson at a bar in Louisville, KY.
Judy Cook - whether in performance or a song circle at the Getaway
Arlo Guthrie - at an acoustic, solo concert in a small venue in WV in the early '70's
Ralph Stanley when Keith Whitley was with him, early to mid 70's, Blue Grass festival in the Clinch Moutains of Va.
Bobby Bland - Dayton, Ohio, mid-80's
Ray Charles - Dayton Ohio, mid 80's
David Bowie - his Space Oddity tour -Charleston, WV early to mid-70's.
Frank Zappa - late 70's, Charleston, WV
Long John Baldry - Akron, Ohio late 60's or very early 70's.
Mick Lane - Getaway mini-concert, early 2000's
Doc Watson - Bluegrass festival - southern WV, mid 70's.

I obviously don't get around much any more. Combination of low income and increased reclusiveness as I age.

tonight i was at the Loaded dog folk club (sydney) and heard George Papavgeris perform. The whole night was perfect, and he was supported by some great acts.

I was particularly moved by a beautiful song George wrote for his dying father, a love song. there was another poignant song about memories, and the last one was sublime - a fantastic piece about life, hope and creativity. there was a wonderful feeling in the room tonight - the music brought us together.

Plenty of great rock bands, but among the folk and acoustic performers, my favourites were probably the first time I saw Paul Downes and Phil Beer or Bill Boazman at the Downs and Outs Folk Club at Cholsey, near Reading in 1976. Others worthy of mention are: Cyril Tawney back in the early eighties at a small club in Stoke on Trent
Steeleye Span at a small gig in Senden, near Münster in 1984 0r 1985
Andy Irvine and Mick Hanly in Tinnef, Köln in 1979
Dick Gaughan at a festival near Koblenz in 1979
Colin Wilkie in Alte Feuerwache ca. 1982
Wild Oats - Downs and Outs near Reading in 1976
Heron - Cap and Gown Reading - mid seventies
Nic Jones - Reading mid seventies
Martin Carthy - British Council Köln - 1985
Tannahill Weavers - British Council Köln - 1985
Jeremy Taylor - Cap and Gown ca 1978
Pete Morton - The Grove, Alsager 1983
Gay and Terry Woods, Cap and Gown, Reading - mid seventies
Don Partridge at the Grove in Alsager ca. 1984
There are probably many others, which I enjoyed just as much, but if I could have any of them again, I would go out to see Downes and Beer and Bill Boazman tonight.

Quite a challenge!

Also Cyril Tawney - anytime, anywhere.
Big Bill Broonzy - Usher Hall Edinburgh, Fifties.
Pete Seeger - ditto and later at The Howff.
Eric Bogle - anytime, anywhere.
Iain McKintosh - again anytime, anywhere but especially in a little village near Frankfurt where, when I appeared, he forgot the words of the song he was singing!
Taffy Thomas MBE - either with The Salamis or on his own as a storyteller.
The McCalmans, particularly at a concert to mark World Aids Day in 1992 in Niddrie Mains Community Centre, Edinburgh, when, after a fire alarm which emptied the centre, they resumed their spot with "Fire Down Below".
Davy Stewart - my living room, Cumbernauld, mid 70's
Dominic Behan - Cottage Theatre, Cumbernauld, 70's.
Vera Johnston - ditto.
Barbara Dickson - ditto.
Bert Lloyd - ditto
The Spinners - ditto.
Ewan & Peggy - ditto.
Carthy & Swarbrick - ditto.
The Fureys - ditto.
Barry Skinner - ditto.
The Humblebums - ditto.,
Jean Redpath - Cumbernauld Burns Club 70's.
Boys of the Lough - ditto (when there was only Robin & Cathal).
Ted Furey - Edinburgh Festival, late 70's.
Willie Scott - Newcastleton Village Hall when a friend who was accompaning "The Kielder Hunt" on the hunting horn fell on to the stage.
Tom Paxton - Glen Echo Folk Festival, Washington DC, 1997
Anyone else I might have missed.

Eddie

Martin, Bogan and Armstrong, once at The Bottom Line in NYC, and again at My Father's Place in Roslyn, Long Island. I had never known musicians on stage to have as much fun as they did.

Jean Ritchie at the library in Westbury, Long Island. No one makes an audience feel at home the way Jean does.

Tommy Jarrell at a fiddlers convention in Pulaski, VA back in the mid 70's. Tommy was old and had his good and bad days, but this day after he recieved a lifetime achievment award, he played a few tunes on the fiddle and it was the most beautiful fiddling I ever heard. I was never a big fan of his style, but those few tunes will remain in my memory forever.

Bert - I'm honored. It had to have been many years ago. I remember going to a sing that I think was at your house not long after we realized that Max lived in Pennsylvania, a couple of years after the DT joined mudcat. I understand you are no longer in Eastern PA, or least not where you were. We hold monthly sings in NJ, so if you are anywhere in range, send me a PM for details. And I am NOT a performer.

Performances I have loved. Back at Fox Hollow, I remember loving Jean Ritchie, Jean Redpath, John and Tony. The Copper Family. All the ballad workshops at Whitby, which we are returning to for the fifth time this summer. Brian Peters. Moira Craig. Alison McMorland and Geordie MacIntyre. Pamela Goddard. Sheila Kay Adams. The list is too long.

You deserve the honor Susan. It takes a lot of courage to get up and sing if one claims 'NOT to be a performer'. There was at least one other time that I enjoyed your singing and that was at WYSIWYGS.

I've got to get back to PA one day, I'll send you a PM when I do.

Keep singing,

Luvya,

Bert.

My most memorable 4 were:

Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger a few times but best of all was at a house concert in LA, I just happened to drive in to LA from the East Coast that same day & was searching about town for music.

The Copper Family in Boston staged as a small local pub sing

The Watersons any number of times in any shape, way or lineup

But mostly what stands out as an all/one time wonder was Peter Belamy, solo at the Eisteddfod Festival held in southern Mass back sometime in the 70's I believe. I can still see him in my mind, bright flaming red suit, all over the stage, singing "On Board A Man O' War" & his Transport song "Walk Around Me Brave Boys & Roll Down" & I can still hear his straight high harmony on the chorus of "Roll Down" while the crowd sang the melody,,,,,,"RoOoLlLlLlL DoOoWwWwNnNnNn".

As a late teen in the 60's watching/hearing John Lee Hooker & his
fingers playing on the neck of his guitar, Dave Van Ronk in a gothic basement of a church drinking wine & singing of the devil & Big Mama Thorten singing at the Boston Tea Party (a club) & cursing Elvis for stealing her "HoundDog" & not having enough soul to sing it, after hearing her sing it she was right on the money too.
Life's been good to me.

Barry

Buster Jenkins
Frankie McWhorter, many times
The Martinez family at Arnett OK Veteran's Hall, with my mom
The David Munnely Band

Several groups at the Fifth Sunday Singings in my home town.

Just what's off the top of my head, and all way too much fun.
