I had to smile at this one. I spent a lot of time organizing ranchers against the MX missile back in the day in Niobrara County, Wyoming. Beautiful country, beautiful people.

So, great results to the Dem contest there have been announced--it's a damn draw in Niobrara: 10 for Clinton, 10 for Obama.

Yee-ha!

And I want you to know, this was such an unexpectedly large turn out in Niobrara County, they had to bring chairs in from the bar, so everyone would have a place to set.

My sister was thrilled to meet and listen to, as well as get an autograph from Hillary Clinton, yesterday. It is extraordinary that any national election Dems even come to WY to campaign...it has been so GOP for so many years, but even WY is important to them this time. I have to say there are more of the old-fashioned, mind-your-own-business Republicans there than you'd thinkg. They always turn out to protect a woman's right to choose. When I was growing up there it was mostly Democrats.

No results yet that I've heard for Goshen County which is BIG Republican territory. Bloody minded, tho, these Wyomingites. Don't try to tell US what to do.

That is so right katlaughing, about the whole Dem/Repub thing there. West River, SD is like that too.

Some of our allies in the fight to hold back uranium mining in the area there included an occasional stampede of John Birchers, and a few Posse Comitatus types now and again.

The thing is, in the wild wide open, everyone relies on one another to survive, and families are well known in their respective communities.

In rural areas, life is never as simple as Dem/Repub, which is the least of it, unless you are running for office.

It is pretty cool your sister met Hillary. When I worked and lived in West River, I met the most fascinating people I've ever met, from Sri Lankan Buddhist monks to the Archbishop of Canterbury, to Rear Admiral Eugene J. Carroll to No Nukes rock stars like Helen Caldicott.

Pretty amazing.

I am talking to my sisters right now. In Casper, people who waited in line for over seven hours to see Hillary, yesterday, AND they didn't have enough room in the gymnasium and had to turn folks away, in Wyoming!! Amazing!

Interesting.........There could be some tales told in what happens................and

"Some of our allies in the fight to hold back uranium mining in the area there included an occasional stampede of John Birchers, and a few Posse Comitatus types now and again."

Yep......Not really so surprising when you think of the liberal-conservative line is really a circle. Scratch an ultra-conservative and you find a super radical...and vice versa. There is often not a hair's breadth between them. Two camps who arrived in almost exactly the same place in totally different ways. Not really so strange a bedfellow as it might seem.

Ain't that the truth Spaw. I saw that over and over in WY. One of the bigger ironies that struck us when I was working on human rights was some members of the AME church didn't want any members of the lesbigay groups to march in the MLK parade one year. Esp. ironic as many of the people who got the parade to happen at all were of the lesbigay org.

Sorcha is right, too, DON'T tell a Wyomingite what to do!

I need to hear and see Hillary in person. After talking with my sisters, I really wish I had been there. It sounds as though it was a fantastic time and Hillary had people electrified and, was very specific with her plans. It sounds as though it was tremendous and BOTH of my sisters got her autograph. Just the historical significance of that, alone, gets me all teary-eyed.

GG, the last time I lived up there, I was very involved in human rights. We learned a lot about and shared a lot about the posse comitaus types who lived there, as well as others. It was a long eight years for those of us who worked on educating and legislating for human rights.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Senator Barack Obama continued his string of victories in caucus states on Saturday, beating Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in Wyoming by a wide margin.

GG,

All this stuff don't really amount to a hill o' beans. There have been deals made at conventions before, and I expect there will be a few made at these--well, specifically the Dem Con. I don't think McCain has to make any.

I think Obama will be better able to defeat McCain. IMO, there's too much 'similarity' between Hillary and McCain. I trust Americans will see that.

My opening posts were meant to be funny, Peace, and not taken literally or terribly seriously. A bit of comic relief. A little something to help us all remember a fool and his money are soon elected.

Some 8500 people voted in the Demo caucus. Over 500,000 people in the state. About 2%. The Republican caucus was closed so no vote totals.

I can't see McCain having any problems winning Wyoming.

It's numbers that count. In the last one in Wyoming, Bush carried by more than 2 to 1. McCain won't do that well, but 55% would be good enough. I don't think there will be any big swings in the West.

Listen up. Those numbers I quoted for Niobrara are the REAL numbers reported in a Reuters article when I came online today. They were calling Niobrara a draw at like, 1:00 this afternoon.

For the obvious reasons, of course.

Not to worry. The census shows that Niobrara County lost 5% of its population. Moving out to the bright lights of the big cities (like Casper).

Only about a 1/4 of the county population has kids. It's an old timers sorta ranching place with nobody per square mile of range. It's very cool.

We used to call it (tongue in cheek) Red Cloud Country.

Now it is the Energy Armpit of the Nation.

Lusk is pretty much due west of Chadron, as the crow flies. We used to go south through Custer and Edgemont to go on our organizing visits to area ranchers. Back then, the coal and gas industry was just getting going. We'd run up and down 85 from Lusk to Newcastle to Four Corners and the Powder River Basin country where we had quite a few allies among the cowboys and Indians.

We've been fighting Cheney & Co. for a LONG time.
