Hillary Clinton With Jay Leno On The Tonight Show: Enters To "Rocky" Theme, Jokes About Sniper Fire
April 3, 2008

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/03/clinton-appears-on-the-to_n_94986.html

"Hillary Clinton hit the humor trail Thursday night by dropping in on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. Though she didn't attempt to go joke-for-joke with Leno by dishing out one-liners like McCain and Letterman, Clinton did attempt to score with her own brand of funny. Entering to none other than the theme from "Rocky," Clinton quickly jumped into a gag about her recent historical embellishments: "I was so worried I wasn't going to make it. I was pinned down by sniper fire," she quipped before briefly discussing her 'lapse' with regards to her Bosnia memories. Leno, for his part, dropped in a joke about answering the phone at 3 a.m. before the conversation moved on to the election, Bill's temper, and Florida delegates."

-snip-

This is wrong on so many levels.

Shame on you, Hillary Clinton!

I don't get the point unless you're just looking for a bash at Clinton maybe?

To each his or her own, but I have a real problem trusting and respecting a politician [or any person for that matter] who lies, and jokes about experiencing sniper fire when there are real snipers firing at service men and women and civilians in Iraq, Afganistan, and elsewhere. I don't think that's at all funny.

Oferrgoonessake, Azizi! The nature of the show is that it's entertainment, and humor is par for the course! So she uses the sniper fire metaphor. She's certainly got a lot of enemies around, taking pot-shots at her. And so she does some other joking around; that's the kind of show it is.

But within moments the conversation went to serious explication of her positions, of her vision for the country's future.

She has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of for that appearance, say I.
I think you're all wet on this one.

I agree that she should be ashamed of the original lie. Joking about it later, as long as the lie is acknowledged and is part of the joke, is ok (I guess). Does 'self-depreciating' mean "I am a jerk and I admit it"?

RE: BS: Hillary Jokes About Sniper Fire

actually, she wasn't joking about sniper fire....she was joking about her own flaws in having screwed up the memory...or exaggerating it.

She didn't pull off the joke very well, though. If she'd have gone on to add a bit of context, it might have worked better. Hillary is not really good at speeches and 'planned' lines like that; she came off better in the rest of the interview.

Right, everybody, it's just entertainment. So was throwing Christians to the lions. But now it's all entertainment, it's all relative, it's all perspective, it's all how I FEEL (vs. what I THINK). I think she was saying, "Oh, isn't that cute, how I lied." No, it's not cute. It may not be evil; it may just be desperate and sick and even sad, but it ain't cute.

CC

PS. Self-deprecating, not self-depreciating. But now I suppose we all have the right to define words from our own perspective, depending on how we feel at the moment we use them.

I don't appreciate it when George W Bush jokes about pardoning Scooter Libby.

This thing is not so cut and dried. Hillary didn't abet treason when she told her fish tale. She did take a lot of the wind out of her own campaign. She shot herself in the foot big time. It tended to make anyone who was not biased toward her question the veracity of anything she said from that point on. Even in the Leno interview, she reinforced the point.

The main thrust of her campaign now seems to be her ability to handle three AM phone calls, yet the excuse she pulls out, for telling a whopper, is being sleep deprived. When she answers those phone calls from insomniac investment bankers at three AM we don't want the first thing out of her mouth to be a lie! This whole thing, has got to be her own, subconscious way of telling us all that she really does not want to be President.

"We are in a really close contest."

I have to say that I don't want another eight years of a President who talks like that. Do you really want her to keep telling us that things are going well, even when they are not, because that is the best thing for her to say politically.

In that respect at least, she is running for the third Bush term.

Part of the problem is that we allow folks to run for office that actually want the job. I think it was Jefferson that thought we should just assign the job to the most qualified person and force them to do the job. Yeah - I know that wouldn't work either.

Maybe if you were limited to not spending more money on your campain than the job pays as a salary.

Being shot at is not a laughing matter. If you have ever been on the receiving end of enemy fire, this is a truth you just KNOW.
Those who have never been shot at will not understand this, and I hope to my soul that if you do not understand this, that you never, ever will.

Yep...neither is being given flowers and a kiss by a little girl...which seems to be all that happened to her in Bosnia.

I'm not sure what tempts candidates to exaggerate the facts when we have SO much recorded and documented information bout the details...and hundreds of willing fact-sifters who are eager to catch a stupid mistake.

The days of the press cooperating in keeping public figures lives private & off limits are gone forever.

Sinbad's comments are hilarious:

Sinbad, an Obama man, has already told the Washington Post's Mary Ann Akers that Clinton"s version of the trip is bunk. He described it as a feel-good USO tour. "I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place,'" Sinbad told Akers recently. (If Akers' article is accurate, Clinton's memory of the gunfire has improved since a December speech in Iowa, when she said she was told that "there might be sniper fire" during the expedition.)

Sinbad said the whole description is ridiculous. "What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife,'" Sinbad told Akers. "'Oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'"

She lied; she has lied many times before. She will lie again. She is never embarrassed at getting caught in her lies. A true American politician.

"Being shot at is not a laughing matter..."

Well, for people who actually have been shot at, it quite often is something they make jokes about. The same way that there was air-raid humour in the London Blitz, for example.

But when it comes people who haven't been shot at, and who haven't gone through air roads and suchlike, but who have been caught trying to gain some advantage by pretending they have been, it is quite something else.

I was shot 'near' when I was doing some hunting about 50 miles from Montreal. Some idiot with a rifle had shot at something and missed. (Must have been a fairly high-power rifel because it was deer season.) I had a Vostok .22 and was looking for rabbit, raccoon, grouse (sitting on the ground or in lower branches of trees) and squirrel. The projectile hit a tree that was about three yards away from me and I could see the score mark on the bark. I hit the deck and tried to become one with the ground. I fired the full clip to let that numbnuts know I was in line with his fire. Rapaire is right. Ya never forget that sound.

Gettin' shot at can sure focus yer mind. (I went looking for the guy. Probably a good thing I didn't find him.)

I see the other really sleazy Hillary bashing thread started by pro-Obama supporter Jack the Sailor, was deleted by Mudelfs.

Here is what I was trying to say when it was deleted:

And y'all were worried about Obama getting swiftboated?

I look at shit like that (the link Jack the Sailor provided to a real sleazy anti-Clinton You Tube video that was badly photoshopped), and get a mean hearted chuckle out of it too. I hate the Clintons.

But I also dislike Obama. Not as much as I detest the Clintons, but I really don't want Obama to be the next president, either.

But you know, when I see this kind of thread (ie "Hillary jokes about sniper fire" and "Pop views...) started by Obama supporters that are so obviously anti-Clinton (the thread originator being a rabid sort of Obama supporter--and there is more than one of them here in the forum), I just consider the threads confirmation of what dirty fighters they are, and how badly it reflects upon the candidate they claim to be supporting--in this case Obama.

Although I've got to say, there are now so many slimy Obama supporters out there pulling this dirty tricks crap on Clinton, I'm thinking FBI plants are behind this shit.

Not that it matters. Obaama is winning, so why stoop to this level anyway? Unless you have Republican backing, of course.

You are delusional. No one with any sense is posting here in hopes of influencing the election. Stop wasting your time. If you want to do something, join a campaign, start a blog or make a video of your own.

If this kind of thing counts as "dirty tricks" American politics must be incredibly clean and high-minded. And somehow I don't get the feeling bit is.

When a politician tells a direct lie in the course of a campaign, which gets demonstrated as such, labels it as "misspeaking", they have to expect that it will be used against them. If they then try to make jokes about it, that is just inviting the kind of response it got here.

Off topic:

Someone pmed me to ask me to post what "talk to the hand" means. Here's my explanation:

"Talk to the hand" is a contemporary Black colloquial saying ["contemporary" meaning at least from the early 1990s. However, I'm not sure when teens and young adults first started saying this. I don't recall hearing it said before the 1990s]

A longer form of this saying is "Talk to the hand cause the face don't give a damn." What is actually meant is "Talk to my hand cause my face [my body, my mind, my soul] don't give a damn about you, let alone about what you're sayin".

When a person says the first part of that sentence-"Talk to the hand"-the second part "cause my face don't give a damn"-is implied, and understood by the person addressed and other persons hearing that statement.

"Talk to the hand" etc. means that you don't want to even waste any energy acknowledging the existence-let alone the words of the person-you are addressing. "Talk to the hand" is generally considered something that females say, though I'm sure males {particularly pre-adolescent males} probably say it too.

"Talk to the hand" is something a female says to another female who is trying to get her riled up {angry}. Keeping one's cool under fire is an important part of African American culture. In that culture, when you react to a person with emotion and particularly with anger, you're admitting that that person has gotten "next to you". When a person "gets next to you" {"bothers you emotionally}, you've lost the battle.*

"Talk to then hand" is said in a stern, no nonsence voice with either a "grittin" face {a harsh, snarling face}-hand gesture #1 or an expressionless face-hand gesture #2.

Either one of these two body gestures are made when a person says "talk to the hand"

Hand gesture #1. The person saying "Talk to the hand" purposely violates the personal space of the person she is addressing by moving very close to that person and putting her hand palm up {in a stop position} very close to that person's face. Violating that person's space is part of the purposeful insult that is given when you say "talk to the hand". Btw, "getting in somebody's face" in a confrontative manner-with or without the "talk to the hand" gesture-has become a street saying in and of itself.

Hand gesture #2. The person saying "Talk to the hand" stands straight with her head averted to the left {in a direction away from the person who has offended her or him}. The person who is saying this holds her hand palm up in a stop position very near the level or her own or his own neck level. This "Talk to the hand" gesture is the same as or very much like the "Don't even go there" gesture.

That gesture means -Stop what you're saying because I don't even wanna hear it".

After a person says "Talk to the hand" to somebody, that person no longer engages in conversation with the person she addressed. If the person addressed responds with some putdown saying, the first person ignores her and refuses to re-engage with her.

The Urban Dictionary
has three definitions of "talk to the hand" and a visual of the "in your face" hand gesture {hand gesture #1}. Each of these definitions are okay but prefer mine :o)

* This coolness under fire is the emotional state of being that persons are supposed to have and to maintain when they are playing The Dozens. When playing the dozens {exchanging witty putdowns}, the person who loses his or her cool, and reacts {responds} with angers, loses.

And that is what I meant when I said "Talk to the hand" to the person who shall remain nameless.

To clarify, in hand gesture #2 of "Talk To The Hand", the right hand palm of the person saying this is held at her neck level. Thus the person's face is looking in one direction {left} and the right hand is facing the opposite direction {right} toward the person being addressed. The hand is either held palm up very close to the person's neck level or the person saying "Talk to the hand"stretches her right arm out with her palm up.

The bottom line is that a person who says "Talk to the hand" is definitely not joking.

I wasn't aware of it being only an African American saying, Azizi. My girls have used it since early 1990s that I can remember.

Yes, it is quite a childish, temper tantrum sort of behavior. And it is done by kids of all backgrounds, so the claim that is exclusively African American is a bit of a stretch.

But then, starting smear threads against the candidate you are opposed to winning in internet forums isn't rude or anything.

katlaughing,

I agree with you that the saying "talk to the hand" cuts across racial/ethnic lines in the USA. What I meant to suggest was that the probably origin {or one of the probably origins} of this saying/hand gesture is African American folks via African and African Diaspora traditional and contemporary sources.

While "the origins and meanings of body gestures" might make an interesting Mudcat thread, in my opinion, continuing to post about this subject in this thread is a distraction from and a disservice to this thread's stated topic.

A liar is a liar is a liar and that's not a smear, it is the truth.
I am a "Yellow dog democrat" and John Edwards was my choice. I have had serious reservations about Obama until recently, and now he has my vote. I do not hate the Clintons, I voted for Bill twice, and I would like to see a woman in the White House, but, not THAT woman.

Why do we refer to Obama as "Black"? he is no more black than he is white. My ancestors came from Scandinavia via Flanders, via England. What does that make me? As far as I'm concerned, Obama is as much American as I, and the prefix "African" is unnecessary.

Obama of course is African-American in a way that very few people are. But of course, Kendell, you have a good point. We do not need to be constantly reminded.

I'm still not too clear why GG, having said that there's nothing to choose between any of the candidates, bothers to spend time fuming and raging about one of them, or being concerned about whether another is getting a fair crack of the whip.

A far better question to be asking yourselves, however, is why the Republicans prefer running against Obama.

But if you want to keep spitting at me, go right ahead. Your spit only fouls your computer screen, not mine.

GG simply wants to be the center of attention. Think of her as a two year old who, when she spreads her feces on the wall, can actually spell "Obama."

With all due respect to Rapaire, who has probably been closer to the sharp end than I have, I can't discount the possibility that Senator Clinton did not actually lie, and I say this as someone who would never vote for her if I had the right to. The fact is that the human mine can sometimes create vivid memories of an event that never happened. I am thinking in particular of a Dutch study in which people were interviewed about their memories of a plane crashing into a building. This was a major disaster, with huge damage and many lives lost. The people interviewed were asked about their memories of seeing the televised video footage of the disaster. Most of them described their memories in detail. Problem: the event was not filmed. They did not see the video, because it never existed. I don't trust the Senator, but I don't think she is a complete idiot either. She should have known that her recollection could easily be checked out, that the news cameras had been rolling, that there were celebrities along with her on the trip.

And politics is all about the preening, self-puffery of politicians. I don't believe Clinton has a corner on that one, to be sure. I've seen plenty of evidence of that all around.

Her remark reminded me of John Kerry coming to the podium at the DNC in 2004, saluting and saying whatever it was he said--the "John Kerry, reporting for duty" thing.

I mean, why not just step up to the podium and say "READY, AIM, FIRE!"

He was taunting the Republicans to swiftboat him and his military record, for chissake.

If it is true, it is neither slander nor libel. It is also not smearing.
If the republicans think they can beat Clinton, why are they voting for her in the primaries?

It is true. Hillary Clinton went on the Leno show and made incredibly lame, self deprecating jokes about SniperFireGate.

So everyone should hate her for that.

Nothing is worse than lame, self conscious attempts at self-deprecating humor when one is appearing on late night.

Nothing on this earth.

Don posted the comment by Churchill

"There is nothing so exhilerating as being fired upon--without result!"

but the one that always stuck in my mind is the anonymous remark:

"I feel like I been shot at and missed...and shit at and hit!"...less exhilarating, perhaps...but maybe more common.

No one here has said that they hate Hillary Clinton. No one here has said that there is nothing worse than what she did. This is just more of your bull shit trolling.
