Have you tried "cover it over quick, jemima"? It worked for me.

Of course I did. And doing so got me lots of references to the song by title, but none that pointed to lyrics.

Have you found lyrics using that as the search entry? If so, do us a favor and post them here.

Subject: Lyr Req cover it over quick jemima
From: joncst

still seeking the lyrics, previous listing didn't seem to get people lit up.
lyric: now we had a chicken for dinner, yesterday we did
and talk about a strong un well it raised the saucepan lid
chas and dave did a version and lyrics on that seem more intelligible, but so far only managed to hear it in a medley, so not all verses heard.
any help appreciated

I did look, but I got nowhere, even with the additional lyrics you so kindly posted. Let's hope Peace or Sorcha (both major lyrics-hounds; I'm a mere puppy) has better luck.

Thanks for understanding why I wanted additional lyrics!

Claire

Subject: Lyr Add: COVER IT OVER QUICK JEMIMA (H Champion)
From: Gurney
Date: 04 Apr 08 - 09:08 PM

This from Cosmotheka. By way of Harry Champion.

Cover It Over Quick Jemima
(Harry Champion, as recorded by Cosmotheka?)

1. Now, we had a chicken yesterday, for dinner, yes we did,
And talk about a strong 'un, why, it raised the saucepan lid.
It popped its head out when the missus went to give a stir
And tried to sing the national anthem, so I says to her:

Cover it over quick, Jemima, cover it over quick,
Give us a fork and hold it tight,
Mind your fingers, it wants to bite!
Odour, smell it, getting strong and thick.
Just give it a chop on its titty-fa-la,
And cover it over quick!

2. Now, my Jemima's got a luvverly wart upon her back,
To show it off in evening gowns , she seems to have the knack.
I took her out to dinner, once, and in the hall I saw
Her low-neck bodice showed her wart, so I commenced to roar:

Cover it over quick, Jemima, cover it over quick,
Stand with your back up against the wall.
Fancy, showing it in the hall!
That young man there, with his coat and stick,
He’s coming to hang his up hat on your wart,
So cover it over quick!

3. Jemima and myself went out to buy the Sunday grub,
We thought we'd have a gargle, so we popped in to a pub.
A tramp crept up beside of us, he did, upon my life,
I pointed to the market bag and shouted to the wife,

Cover it over quick, Jemima, cover it over quick,
Hide the 'taters and hide the beans,
I can tumble to what he means,
Can’t you see we shall lose 'em in a tick?
And he's having a look at your rabbit and pork
So cover it over quick!

4. Whilst working on the scaffold once, I tore me corduroys.
Soon I was surrounded by a gang of girls and boys.
The missus brought me dinner, nearly had a fit, because
I shouted, as I showed her what a nasty tear it was:

Cover it over quick, Jemima, cover it over quick,
Put me dinner upon the ground
While you’re making me trousers sound
I'll catch cold if you're more than half a tick,
And the ducks'll be after me little mince pie,
So cover it over quick!

So cover it, cover it, cover it, cover it, cover it over quick!

Has possibilities, doesn't it?

It was on a Cosmotheka programme by the BBC, aired on four Saturdays in a row here in NZ about 15 years ago. I taped them.
That's only one of the great old music-hall (English vaudeville) songs on there.

gurney you are a star. i'm trying the chas and dave root, as they might have been a bit more faithful to harry champ. their version has the chicken singing anchors aweigh, for example. think i'll start a thread on altering songs, see how people feel. ive resurrected 'these old lavender trousers' and dare i say it touched up 'don't do it again matilda.' so wonderful gurney, thanks a lot.

I heard back from Steve Travis about the lyrics. He directed me back to Mudcat and Gurney's lyrics. It is indeed a small world with lots of nice people in it.

Joncst, Cosmotheka also recorded 'Don't Do It Again, Matilda' in the same programme.   Googling them didn't immediately lead to a useful lyrics site. There may be one out there for the thorough researcher.
And yes, I like Chas and Dave too.

I couldn't find a complete recording of this song online. The best I could find was a medley that contained only one verse and chorus. You can hear the medley at YouTube. This is the second song in the medley, after I'M HENERY THE EIGHTH I AM:

COVER IT OVER QUICK, JEMIMA
As sung by Harry Champion

VERSE: We had a chicken yesterday for dinner, yes we did,
And talk about a strong 'un! Why, it raised the saucepan lid.
It popped its head out when the missus went to give a stir.
It tried to sing "The Anchor's Weighed" until I said to her:

CHORUS: Cover it over quick, Jemima! Cover it over quick!
Grip the fork and hold it tight.
Mind your fingers. It wants to bite.
And oh, the smell! It's steady, strong and thick.
Just give it a chop on the tiddy-fal-lal* and cover it over quick. REPEAT

* On the repetition of the chorus, substitute "parson's nose."

The recorded version I have of Harry Chanpion's song is very short. Was something omitted as too Rude for those days? My father (born Sussex, 1896) used to call a chamber-pot a "jemima". Cover it over quick?
