Subject: Lyr Req: Anna Canova's Groggie went a-courtin'
From: Roberto
Date: 06 Apr 08 - 11:45 AM

Please, help to complete and correct this transcription.
Froggie went a-courtin', sung by Anna Canova & Julietta, in Yazoo's The Story that the Crow Told Me. I can't get a word in 6th stanza, and I've put a questino mark where I'm not sure of what I've written down. Thanks. R

Mr. Frog went a-courtin', he did ride, mm, mmm
Mr. Frog went a-courtin', he did ride
A sword and a pistol by his side, mm, mm

He went up to Miss Mousie's door, mm, mmmm
He went up to Miss Mousie's door
He rapped so loud till he made it roar, mm, mm

Oh Miss Mouse, are you within? - mm, mmmm
Oh Miss Mouse, are you within?
Yes, kind sir, I card and spin, mm, mmmm

Miss Mousie, will you marry me? - mm
Miss Mousie, will you marry me?
Yes, kind sir, just you (?) wait and see, mm, mm

Where shall the wedding be? - mm, mmmm
Where shall the wedding be?
Away down yonder in the hollow tree, mm, mm

Now, what shall we have for the wedding supper? mm
What shall we have for the wedding supper?
Black-eyed peas and … (???) and butter, mm, mmm

Mr. Froggie went a-swimming 'cross the lake, mm, mm
Mr. Froggie went a-swimming 'cross the lake
He got swallowed by a big black snake, mm, mmm

Now, this was an end to the one, two, three, mm, mmm
This was an end to the one, two, three
The frog and the flea and the bumble-bee, mm, mm

Sorry, a mistake in the title: Groggie, of course, not Groggie...

The song supposedly is a mockery of Andrew Jackson and his relationship with his wife, as well as opposition politicians.

Thank you, Peter. I know many versions and recordings of this song, and many many more exist. But I haven't found one that could help in order to find the missing word in my transcription. I hope that someone who has English has mother tongue owns the (beautiful) CD and finds time to answer to me. R

Try...

"Two green beans and a black eyed pea!"

Best wishes,

Peter

I assumed you were after a drunken version of the song.
I'm sure if we wait long enough, some Mudcatter will provide one...
Quack!
Geoff the Duck.

Waddon Pete writes: Try..."Two green beans and a black eyed pea!"
Pete, I'm not tryinig to invent a verse, but to find out what is actually sung in the recording by Anna Canova & Juliette.

Geoff the Duck writes of a drunken version of the song. Geoff, I think the recording we're talking about is a fine one, although the story is short and missing many of the details you find in other sets.

Actually Pete is giving you part of a legitimate verse....not making one up!

Legitimate, but "two green beans and a black eyed pea" can't be what I miss in the line "Black-eyed peas and ... and butter". R

This is a standard for my group, & we use a corny ending that goes:

There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, uh-huh.
There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, uh-huh.
There's bread and cheese upon the shelf,
If you want any more, you can sing it yourself.

And stop abruptly, without the last 'uh-huhs' or anything at all.

It never fails. After 3.8 seconds of stunned silence, somebody in the audience will go, "Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh."

I've listened again, this time with earphones, and the word I couldn't get is bread, simply bread, thus the line is: "Black-eyed peas and bread and butter". Still, I'm not sure of the 4th stanza. R

Mr. Frog went a-courtin', he did ride, mm, mmm

A sword and a pistol by his side, mm, mm

He went up to Miss Mousie's door, mm, mmmm

Could the admin of the Mudcat please correct the title of this thread, and put Froggie instead of Groggie? Thanks. R
