Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Anna Canova's Groggie went a-courtin' From: EBarnacle Date: 06 Apr 08 - 11:21 PM The song supposedly is a mockery of Andrew Jackson and his relationship with his wife, as well as opposition politicians. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Anna Canova's Groggie went a-courtin' From: Roberto Date: 07 Apr 08 - 10:41 AM Thank you, Peter. I know many versions and recordings of this song, and many many more exist. But I haven't found one that could help in order to find the missing word in my transcription. I hope that someone who has English has mother tongue owns the (beautiful) CD and finds time to answer to me. R |

Pete, I'm not tryinig to invent a verse, but to find out what is actually sung in the recording by Anna Canova & Juliette. Geoff the Duck writes of a drunken version of the song. Geoff, I think the recording we're talking about is a fine one, although the story is short and missing many of the details you find in other sets. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Anna Canova's Groggie went a-courtin' From: Roberto Date: 09 Apr 08 - 12:59 PM Legitimate, but "two green beans and a black eyed pea" can't be what I miss in the line "Black-eyed peas and ... and butter". R |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Anna Canova's Groggie went a-courtin' From: GUEST,Chicken Charlie Date: 10 Apr 08 - 10:54 AM This is a standard for my group, & we use a corny ending that goes: There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, uh-huh. There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, uh-huh. There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, If you want any more, you can sing it yourself. And stop abruptly, without the last 'uh-huhs' or anything at all. It never fails. After 3.8 seconds of stunned silence, somebody in the audience will go, "Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh." CC |
