Mairi (MAH-ree) is not Gaelic, it's a Scots approximation of the Gaelic "Mhairi", where the "mh" is a sound between "b", "m" and "v" which doesn't exist in English. The subject of the song (who died a few years ago) called herself "Mairi" though.

The song is excruciatingly tacky and must have been the topic of a zillion threads here.

I'd bet you'll have an interesting time trying to pronounce "Dalziel".

ell the thread is talking about something other that English traditional music, which is a welcome change, there are other traditions and other countries where the traditions are practiced. Being one quarter Scots I do take an interest.

"Start off the day with steaming Scott's Porage Oats" sung to the tune of Scotland The Brave. And there's a pic of a brawny chap in a kilt tossing the caber (possibly to disguise an inability to spell "porridge") on said cereal box. A jolly Scots ditty and a million times less tacky than Mairi's flamin' Wedding.

In Irish it's spelled "Máire" and pronounced Moy-ra.
"Mairi" isn't even Gaelic. It's an anglicised form of a word beginning Md and/or h (far too many consonants anyway),

Sure, like every country in the world has their own traditions and practices. It is a shame that this forum is dominated by only one type of discussion these days. We could all learn so much more.

Exactly, Ron. I believe I have posted in the past that I'm one quarter Scots, one quarter Welsh...my other half, as it were is North American Native, Mohawk. I also enjoy and sing the English Tradition, The Maritime traditions, both west and east coasts of North America, Sandy Denny, the list is endless...oh yes and I've also been known to sing the odd song recorded by The Band *LOL* As you say we could, and can, learn a whole lot more.

I can't see that spurious, pretendy, shortbread-tin crap for tourists can be construed as "traditions and practices". The very antithesis, I think. If by "only one type of discussion" you are regretting the decline of wifty-wafty, celticky fantasising and the rise in profile of a historical musical heritage worthy of celebration, I say good and about time.

errr no...unless. of course, you class outfits like Croft No. 5, The Peat Bog Faeries and Clan Wallace, oh and from the past, Silly Wizard, as "wifty-wafty, celticky fantasising".

If there weren't so many people living in north America discussing British music and culture to the point of complete obsession, TBH, maybe the subject matter here would be somewhat more diverse.

You'd know ALL about discussing the English Tradition and what's happening vis a vie funding and such like, to the point of
complete obsession wouldn't you?... It does get soooo tiresome! Which is what i mean about this forum is dominated by only one type of discussion these days, can't speak for anyone else though.

Subject: RE: how to pronounce Mairi
From: Ruth Archer

Well, Charlotte, I do live in England. I work in the live music
industry. I'm asked to talk about "English Tradition and what's happening vis a vie funding and such like" (by the way, it's vis a vis) at national conferences. I have taught Arts Management at university level. If we start talking about certain artforms being prioritised over others, I actually have something to contribute. Of course, not having anything to contribute doesn't seem to stop you from barging in - in fact, i've never known anyone use so many words to say so little.

I really don't understand how someone can be so completely obsessed with events they never go to, pubs and clubs they never visit, festivals they never attend, TV shows they never see, papers they never read, culture they have no day-to-day experience of, but not only feel compelled to discuss it to the exclusion of all else, but insist on correcting, slapping down, and undermining THE PEOPLE WHO DO EXPERIENCE IT EVERY DAY with endless prissy and irrelevant put-downs. You always know better - even than the people who are actually invovled in things personally. It's staggering.

Is there no music where you live? No clubs, no folk culture? Why not engage with it, and then come back and tell us about it, instead of endlessly pontificating about the view from up Ma and Pa's arse, or wherever it is today?

Do you mean "vis-à-vis" funding?
In my view it's rather tiresome that there's nothing like enough of it.
In England that is.
Things are different elsewhere, like Scotland and Ireland where tradarts get government cash thrown at them. Or id. It's aabating just a bit now.

I don't think anybody even mentioned the bands you list: let's see, it's only a short thread, no . . . still less describe them as new-agey, wifty-wafty shit. Which they are not. You forgot Lau, Shooglenifty and Clan Alba, btw.

No, we're talking about Mairi's sodding Wedding, though gawd knows why.

The song, "Mairi's wedding" is definitely heel and toe wifty-wafty. If you're looking for cheerful Scottish songs, how about the day we went to Rothesay (o)?

I engage with it (music), as you so quaintly put it, everyday of my life. I play and and teach piano, I also play acoustic and electric guitars, a recently acquired Martin D-12 and a 1961 Fender Stratocaster (this for completists only)Ummm folk clubs, just one...festivals, three within driving distance, I try to attend at least two of them every year......

I don't know why this thread has deteriorated, but I feel sorry for the original poster. She came across a song and she liked the tune - thought it sounded lively. Innocently she asked about pronunciation of a name that occurred in the song. She got the answer, but were all the other nasty comments necessary???

I can't be bullied, Charlotte. I'm just a grizzly ol' hairy-arse with non-sycophantic opinions that don't suit Ruth.   Ruth thinks she wins and I think stop when it's clear the game ain't worth the candle.   So we both think we win but only one of us is right. ;-)

And i should add that it's peculiar of certain people who claim to be bullied on Mudcat - they're often people who are quite aggressive themselves. When anyone stands up to them, they cry bully. Now I wonder who that reminds me of?

I'm old enough to know better, but young enough not to give a sh*t! *LOL* Me, I alwayd thought music was meant to be enjoyed, whether being played or listened to, I can't be bothered analyzing it, did enough of that when taking music lessons... I enjoy music for the sake of it...and for no other reason
