I have voted NDP most of my voting years, although sometimes gritting my teeth while doing so. I admired Trudeau and Chretien, and I wished Joe Clark had gotten a better deal, and Robert Stanfield, too - there was a man.

And now? Harper's just spooky. He has this slightly clownish awkward aspect that disarms people - anybody that gormless (just remember that cowboy get-up) just can't be dangerous. In reality, he's the most power hungry individual I've ever seen as PM. He has an agenda which he's dictated to his own party. Nobody's allowed to get out of line, and if they do, they lose. He's clever enough to know just how much Canadians will put up with - note the fast burial of the anti-gay marriage vote, the silence on abortion laws, the care taken with MSI, even though many in his ranks are right wing enough to have hoped to dive right into the past on all those issues. He's come to the brink of outright battle with a number of premiers, and shut them all down except for Danny Williams (presently the sainted god-king of Newfoundland... "Did you hear me say 'surplus', b'ys? I know you did!)

I'd like to see Dion get a grip on his own party, wandering in the wilderness because half of them are still pouting about Michael I-left-Paradise-to-lead-you-benighted-troglodytes not winning the party leadership. I think he's probably a good man, Dion.

I don't see us losing Harper next election, but I'd be thrilled to be proved wrong.

I would vote for Kermit the Frog if he ran for PM against Harper. No hesitation. I think Kermit would make a fine PM.

tune: "Drove Old Dixie Down"

Richard Nixon's the name and I've won every damn campaign,
Stonewalled congress's game and tore up the tapes again,
In the summer of '74---they were angry and demanding more,
By August 8th I had to tell
Because a tape can remember all too well!

CHORUS)
On the night that they drove ol' Dickey down,
All the people were singing,
On the night that they drove old Dickie down,
Dan Rather was bleating,
He went "Na-na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na,
Na-na-na-na-na-naaaa!!!

Minds me of an Air Farce sketch a la "To Tell The Truth". Every time Bob spoke it was, "Ahhhh, well, ahhhh...." In the end, Jean stood up and you could hear Bob say, "Ahhh... wait a minute, ahhhh...."

Maggie.... well, when ya wanna be a serious journalist and ya get yer pic taken with yer cookie smilin at the camera, well, ahhhh...

Agree Little Hawk about Margaret. They even made fun of her by changing the name of the Kenny Rogers hit "Lucille' to her name.
Yes poor Joe Who. You could also add to that list Mr.Stanfield. It's has been said that he would have made a very good Prime Minister if it wasn't for his image. I think his handle was "The Undertaker".

The amount of ridicule directed at Margaret Trudeau over the years has been a rather sad thing to witness. She was a young, insecure woman who had the bad fortune to marry a much older political celebrity, and she rode the whirlwind. The fact that she fell off the horse a couple of times has resulted, I think, in more criticism than she deserved.

Then too, the amount of ridicule directed at Joe Clark for being a basically nice man in a pool of sharks was rather sad to see too.

Politics is a cruel business.

And, he could paddle a canoe!

Of course, since this is a music site, let us not forget that he dated Barbara Streisand.

Harper (grrrr) seems to me to have a canoe paddle up his... and, like John said, if he ever got a majority, we would be up the creek without a paddle save for Smiley paddling us, worse than he is now.

I must look to see if my Petrocan shares ever arrived. Hmmm... are there any Petrocan stations anywhere these days?

Hay John!!, hold o now. Don't get pissed. All I'm saying is that in the beginning there were a few moves he made that made me think, finally someone is in power that is not afraid to make decisions. Be the right or wrong ones but not afraid to a lest make one. I'm no lover of harper or any of the others.

Geez, Beer, don't get me started! I could rant about that phoney for days!

If he gets a majority, he'll show his true colours. Medicare will disappear, we'll be chasing after the Americans in their next goofy military adventure, and, and.... ...I'd better stop now before my blood pressure boils over!

There are many who disliked the late PET but I for one admired him very much. I was living on the Montreal Island when the War measure's act came into effect and felt comforted to know that there was a leader who cared. He was afraid of nothing and didn't sit on fence posts. He was brash and could be arrogant but he had a purpose in mind and followed it through. You'll all shoot me here, but I thought I saw a glimmer of this in Harper for a brief moment just after he got in power. It seems I was wrong. We sure could use someone like him again. I believe Sandy mentioned something along these lines.

Slight thread creep. In mid 2006 Himself and I were in B.C. for a short visit. On the eve of Canada Day we watched a fabulous documentary called "Canada Guitar" which, as non-Canadians, we found fascinating. Some of the wood used for the guitar comes from Pierre Trudeau's canoe paddles - I'm sorry, but I can't remember where it was on the finished guitar. But I remember that the various components were from people or buildings which were considered very significant to Canada's history.

Since then we have also visited more of Canada and I'd very much like to see the doco again.

Cheers
JennieG

And yes, very few Canadians don't think of Tommy Douglas with gratitude one time or another in their lives.

That's it - I hereby forego any expectation of being taken seriously when giving, estimating, or in any wise mentioning the vertical status of any public figure, living or dead.

It's a strange fact, but PET and my own father were founders of Canada's NDP. Each wrote chapters of a book called "Social Purpose for Canada", which was going to be a manifesto for the "New Party" as it was then called.
Trudeau eventually jumped ship, and became a Liberal, but he took with him several ideas from the NDP. Tommy Douglas, the first leader of the NDP, brought Medicare to Saskatchewan. Trudeau, as a Liberal Prime Minister, helped to make the program Nation-wide. He attempted to take full credit, but a recent poll indicates that Canadians regard Tommy Douglas as the greatest Canadian in history.
Trudeau was a strange mix; part poseur and part substance. His views were often faddish and transient.
Still he was light-years ahead of today's crop of dimwits.

I'd make 'em clean it all off when they're caught -- and they will be, because they'll have to tell everyone about their brave deed.

Yeah, makin' 'em clean it COMPLETELY is a good idea.

And take it from someone who once did that sort of thing as part of his job, it's not easy. Takes a lot of elbow grease and work. And while they were doing it, I'd make 'em learn about PET.

Jeesh, it hurts like hell to admit that I was wrong and someone else was right - but in this picture Chretien is substantially taller than Trudeau - and Trudea was no midget.

Or maybe he was. My judgement in these matters has proven questionable.

For all they both had faults, made some mistakes, and belonged to the wrong party (;-p), I think of Trudeau and Chretien (still mischievously alive) with great affection and admiration.

But I'll also bet it was young idiots who hardly know what FLQ means who did the vandalizing.

In my opinion (of course), the greatest statesman of all. He was everything and he was far ahead of his time.

I remember watching him live when he had just invoked The War Measures Act. When asked how far he would go, he replied, "Just watch me." And, he meant it. And "The October Crisis" was quelled.

That is not to diminish any of the world's statespersons in any way... just that I think he was a truly remarkable man. Compassionate, passionate and tough as nails.

Yes, G. Very sad indeed.

I wouldn't give it much importance. It's just young, stupid people with a lust for getting public attention, I would think. There are always such people around causing damage to this and that.

For instance, we have a large bronze statue of Samuel De Champlaigne in the civic park in Orillia. It has several times been vandalized and damaged by stupid young men with apparently nothing else they could think of to do with their time on that particular day.

There are idiots everywhere. Some of them experience the delusion that they are making a useful "political statement" when they damage public property.

I assume this is just a couple of drunks and not a trend.

Trudeau; you could love him or hate him, but he did have one thing that's rare in politics today: a large, highly functional brain. And he didn't try to hide it; he loved to show off his intellectual capacity as much as George Bush likes to show off his imbecility.
