I play this in D (C formation, capo on 2) to get the sound I want and match a recording by Liam Clancy. Chords are for C form.

BTW, I'm in Pomfret, Connecticut, USA. You're not too far from our namesake town (Pontefract) in Merrie Olde. I also noticed Hartlepool is close to you on the map - brings back memories of the famous monkey song.

Is that the song about the Brits mistaking a monkey for a Frenchman and shot the poor sod ?

Cant find Connecticut on my map......where is it in relation to Virginia/Williamsburg, I have been accepted into Graduate school there later this year for a degree in deep sea biology. Hartlepool is just south of me and the area as a whole is in the throws of drowning their sorrows as we had the 'FA cup' today (Our Superbowl) and Newcastle lost......dammit, 2-0 oh well !

There is also a Scottish song on the same lines where a French ship wrecked off Boddam (S. of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire) and the sole survivor was the ship's monkey. The locals assumed this was a Frenchman, and since there was currently a war with France, they hanged it. I don't have the words but the title is "Yhe Boddammers Hanged The Monkey-O"

In younger, more lunatic days I played with a trio that would start off "The Streets of London" with a reference to Pachebel's Canon in D (yes, the world-famous music to eat brunch by).

Try it! You have to change the penultimate chord (I think that's the right one) but it can be surprisingly effective as a segue.

If you like folk music, stick around. You will only be further awed by the breadth of knowledge and information contained within this site.

There is a core of posters here who sort of keep the site going with their comments, but there is a nearly invisible army of people who are "lurking" in the threads, just reading what they like and leaving the rest. and jumping in with an obscure lyric or chord that no one else knew.

There is also a lot of intellectual discussion and insanity (sometimes difficult to separate) going on here. You might want to browse through some of the other threads to get a flavor of it.

I should warn you that the Mudcat Forum has proven addictive for some (I number in that group). Mudcatters have been known to even put down an instrument to seek out the Mudcat.
