Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Lawrence Date: 22 May 99 - 01:55 PM Dear Tiger Your an 'unseen pal', You will be pleased (and intrigued) to know, that I have fwd your kind response to a friend of mine who is currently in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a Scientific research vessel. Your music will go via Swedish base station, bounce of a satellite and onto the ship. Cazy stuff ah ?, I am a marine biologist in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK where are you?, Many many thanks in any case. Lawrence

Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Tiger Date: 22 May 99 - 04:44 PM That's what this electronic community is all about, Lawrence. BTW, I'm in Pomfret, Connecticut, USA. You're not too far from our namesake town (Pontefract) in Merrie Olde. I also noticed Hartlepool is close to you on the map - brings back memories of the famous monkey song. .....Tiger |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Lawrence Date: 22 May 99 - 07:16 PM ...Tiger Is that the song about the Brits mistaking a monkey for a Frenchman and shot the poor sod ? Cant find Connecticut on my map......where is it in relation to Virginia/Williamsburg, I have been accepted into Graduate school there later this year for a degree in deep sea biology. Hartlepool is just south of me and the area as a whole is in the throws of drowning their sorrows as we had the 'FA cup' today (Our Superbowl) and Newcastle lost......dammit, 2-0 oh well ! Take it easy Lawrence

Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Alex Date: 22 May 99 - 09:40 PM There is also a Scottish song on the same lines where a French ship wrecked off Boddam (S. of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire) and the sole survivor was the ship's monkey. The locals assumed this was a Frenchman, and since there was currently a war with France, they hanged it. I don't have the words but the title is "Yhe Boddammers Hanged The Monkey-O" |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: MichaelM Date: 22 May 99 - 09:52 PM In younger, more lunatic days I played with a trio that would start off "The Streets of London" with a reference to Pachebel's Canon in D (yes, the world-famous music to eat brunch by). Try it! You have to change the penultimate chord (I think that's the right one) but it can be surprisingly effective as a segue. Michael |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Lawrence Date: 23 May 99 - 06:04 AM Dear Alex and Michael Miland Thanks for the info on "Yhe Boddammers Hanged The Monkey-O" AND Pach. C. "world-famous music to eat brunch by"..........Brilliant, but I'll never " do lunch again" that's for sure ! See Ya Lawrence

Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Don Meixner Date: 23 May 99 - 09:37 PM This is a favorite song of mine and I learned the chorus with a different chord structure in a few places. So (F)how can you (G)tell me that you're (C)lone (Am)ly. And (Dm)say for you that the sun don't (G)shine. (walk up to C) (C)Let me take you (G)by the hand and (Am)lead you through the (Em)streets of London. (F)I'll show you (C)something to (G)make you (G7)change your (C)mind. Great song anyway its done. Don |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 24 May 99 - 02:57 AM Of course, Don, you could be like me and compromise and make it a Dm7 instead of Dm or D7. Ah, the joys of learning by ear. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: John Wood Date: 24 May 99 - 07:29 PM I've got the Ralph McTell Songbook, and in there it says: ``[F]Kicking up the pa-[C/G]pers with his [Dm/F]worn out [G]shoes?´´ Chorus:So [F]how can you [Em]tell me your're [C]lone--[G6]--[Am]ly,-[Am7/G] [D9/F#]And say for you [D7/F#]that the sun don't [G7]shine? Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 26 May 99 - 06:30 PM Lawrence, If you like folk music, stick around. You will only be further awed by the breadth of knowledge and information contained within this site. There is a core of posters here who sort of keep the site going with their comments, but there is a nearly invisible army of people who are "lurking" in the threads, just reading what they like and leaving the rest. and jumping in with an obscure lyric or chord that no one else knew. The DigiTrad Database contains over 6,000 folk songs and grows larger every year. Someday we'll teach you how to search it. There is also a lot of intellectual discussion and insanity (sometimes difficult to separate) going on here. You might want to browse through some of the other threads to get a flavor of it. I should warn you that the Mudcat Forum has proven addictive for some (I number in that group). Mudcatters have been known to even put down an instrument to seek out the Mudcat. Welcome, Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Sheet music (chords) 'Streets of London' From: Don Meixner Date: 26 May 99 - 10:22 PM Anytime Lawrence, most of us in this forum would rather stay up with you allnight before we'd let ya go to bed hungry. Thats just the kind of folks we are. Don |
