I've also always thought "Felinius Monk" would be a good name for a boy cat. Especially if he's into jazz.

Kat, unfortunately, no pics of Specklebat Bertie (Bat, for short). He was an all black kitten who almost died as a result of being rejected by his mother, the evil Belinda. I fed him warm, watered down yogurt to keep him alive. He was doing quite well, then at five months I took him for his distemper vaccination.

At that time he and my two other (immunized) cats were all indoor city kitties. Within a few days, he became deathly ill - with distemper. The vet would not admit that the only place he could have caught it was at the clinic or from the shot, but they did not charge me for five days of i.v. feeding and hydration and medication. I brought him home, a limp bundle of bones and dull fur, with a tube of sticky nutrient stuff to smear on his mouth to help him start eating.

Less than a week later, some idiot let him outside. I had moved to a new house while he was at the vet. I figured I'd never see him again, but let the people at my old place know. Three weeks later and about twenty blocks away, they called to say he was in their porch. He didn't get off my lap for a week!

It was at that point the speckles showed up. He was evenly dotted with eighth inch to quarter inch white spots all over back, sides, belly, tail, head and face. His ears were smaller than average and his head very flat, and his neck seemed a bit too long. His body was long and slender, his legs proportionately just a bit too short.

He was never sick again a day in his eighteen years. When I moved to the country, he turned into a super-hunter, wouldn't even eat cat food. I saw him one day hunting Chimney Swifts. I felt bad for the birds, but his technique was astounding to watch, crouching in the tall grass, waiting till the Swift was just near the bottom of a steep, fast dive, then a leap and grab so fast you blinked, you missed it.

He was addicted to Valerian root. I had a back accident and was using Valerian for relief. He'd go to extremes to get at it and I'd find him passed out in a mess of it. He was a great cat - but very odd.

I forgot to list Hawkeye a huge orange tabby who inexplicably was also called "Little Kittle" and he was a gentle giant.

There was also Najuni, a little calico who got out and caught by a mean dog. And, Sweet Pea, an elderly Siamese who came to us in her last few weeks of life. Truly a sweet cat and grateful to be off the streets.

They tell me they prefer my names and they don't like Pip's "nice names" but Pip tells me they tell her the opposite.

Of course they have their own real name we will never know anyway... and as long as we feed them and do whatever else their humans are supposed o do for them, they are happy.

As I am currently cat-free, I have been adopted by next door's cat, who drops in and treats the place like a cross between a snack bar and a hotel. He and his meal-ticket are French. His name is Cha-cha. He is bilingual, speaking French and Fridge. We communicate in Fridge. As I type, he is lolling in the middle of the carpet. Grey and white and bad tempered. Stroke him and he bites you.
Not long after he arrived, I went to bed one night, thinking he had let himself out of the cat-flap and gone home. At 1AM, he appears, hops on the bed, peers in my face, mutters "wrong house" and goes home.

A generic cat-name very commonly used in New Orleans and throughout South Louisiana is minou(x) (sp?), pronounced "min-OOO," reportedly a French word for cat. Yes, I know, "chat" is the French word for "cat," but minou is another word, perhaps analogous to the English "kitty," "pussycat," etc.

The shortened/Anglicized version of minou is, of course, "Minnie." We had a female Minnie who got locked in the house for Katrina and starved to death when we were unexpetedly delayed for six weeks before we could return home after evacuating with two days worth of clothing.

Her son, named Leroy, was outside when we had hurriedly locked up to evacuate, so he survived. He was feral for moe than a year after Katrina, running the streets with the racoons who had taken over the neighborhood in the absense of human inhabitants.

Leroy was born in my dirty laundry, so he and I have had a deep "imprinted" relationship for his whole life, especially when I've been stinkingly sweaty. Nevertheless, he was very reluctant to return to domestic life when we first returned from exile. I'd see him once every week or two, and he definitely reacted when I called his name (verifying to me that it was indeed him, not a lookalike), but for months, he'd immediately run away when I called.

Shortly after my mother passed away, we inherited custody of her cat Pookie (the ninth or tenth "Pookie" to have lived in that house, dating back to the early 1960s when my late father named a kitten after a tv-star cat puppet belonging to Soupy Sales).

Only when he saw a rival feline occupying our house, his former home, did Leroy show any interest in returning to captivity. This was about a year ago by now. Pookie and Leroy have since become friends (more-or-less) and learned to coexist peacefully, but first there was a brief period of intense jealosy and kittycat combat.

Their names are, of course, arbitary at best. As pointed out above, cats aren't much for answering to names, or answering at all, anyway. Pick a name YOU like; it'll always mean more to you than to the cat(s), anyway...

Sergeant Bluepetal, a large and serious tuxedo, who was too intelligent for his own good, and lived long with his companion
Belinda Bump, an evil yellow-eyed shaggy black female who hated everyone, including her own kittens (too slow, me, on getting the spay & neuter done - only the once) and their son
Specklebat Bertie, long, lithe white speckled black kitty, a throwback to cats of the middle ages with his flat head and small ears, mighty hunter, lived to be nineteen.
Petey, great hunter of rabbits, handsome sand tabby with a sense of humour, eaten by a bobcat at the age of twelve.
Tommy, my present gorgeous classic tabby, loving and happy
and Snowball, called Ragbag most of the time, due to his constantly coming in with long white hair in snarls and mats, full of twigs, brambles, burrs, spruce needles, and the occasional trapped slug.

My neighbour's cat had the imaginative name of 'Puss'. It lived forever - half its life with only 3 legs and half a tail. And purred very loudly.
Their cat now is called Caspar. I'm not sure why as he's a HUGE brown tabby.

Most of the cats I kept were named for Lord of the Rings characters. In the cases of Hamfast (= Stay-at-home), Samwise (= Half-witted) and Tom Bombadil they were entirely appropriate...

Our kitties are Nova (aka "Nova-kitty", "Nutter" or "Lard-butt", among other things) and Luna (take a wild guess...)

They were from a rescued litter of seven furballs given celestial names by their foster mom: Nova, Luna, Orbit, Cosmos, Doppler, Starla, and Zora.

Our 16-year-old cat who died last year was Boots--short for "Puss-in-Boots". Although the cat was a she, and a scaredy-cat too--nothing like her namesake.

Gabriel arrived from nowhere and moved in on the previous owners of this house. They named him. We moved in on him, but after training me successfully, he didn't seem to mind!

The first one, Cheucie, was Whatshername's cat before our marriage. She didn't need any trianing... the cat, I mean... Whatshername was not trainable at all. Cheucie pretty much understood what I said and she heeded me. Even if she did not want to, say, go in the house, she did, growling and pissed off, but she did.

Cassie and Maggie respnded well to training. Maggie was nearly as good as a dog as I was working at home when we got her and I took the time to train her on a daily basis from the time she first saw me. I often think of her and hope she made out okay after she left.
Sorcha was quite right. I doubt I'll ever have another. But, I thought this was a good thread topic... well, maybe I was just thinking about Maggie... sniff.

I suppose "Bathtime" is a poor choice... and "Vet"... >;-)

I named our huge tomcat Bill, because he came to us after living rough in the neighbourhood for about a here. I happened to be reading W.S. Davies' "Diary of a Super Tramp" at the time, so I named him after the author: William, hence Bill. The name has come to suit him well, since he is sometimes a big oaf like Bill Sykes and gives our little female cat a hard time. Usually, however, he has a certain galumphing charm.

Earliest cat I recall was Wimpy named for the Popeye character who loved hamburger. Then there was Merricat named for the charming character in Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle".
Our daughter named Blackie's offspring Inky, Inkspot and Inkblot but my wife changed the latter's name to Rorschach and she showed a lot of character. Then there was the Christmas gift named Noel and of course Magnificat for my wife's singing career.

I think it entirely depends on what your next pussycat looks like.

It's no use calling it Smudge or Smokey or Ash if it's a ginger tiger. They're grey names.

We have a black cat named after a black bird (Raven) and a dark tabby called Shadow - when I rescued her, she followed me everywhere and you can't see her in the dark, like my shadow. I don't know what her name was previously but she's not answered to Shadow now for 17 years.

I believe in giving cats dignified names - which can be adjusted to something less formal if that seems appropriate.

Mine, a long haired tortoiseshell is called "Morgana the Flatulent" because when small she farted when you picked her up and as she was recently weaned and just switching her metabolism from milk to meat and cereal, her farts were vehement!!! She is usually known as "Little Wugsie" tho' and "Moglet"

Problem is, it all depends on the personality of the kitten. And they change as they grow, to make it more complicated. Had a cat called Bundle once who became a very dignified adult cat, so he had to be renamed Cato, after the Roman politician.
Bonnie Shaljean and I once shared two cats, one named Dunstable and one called Felicity. Sort of summed up their personalities. (Bundle/Cato was Dunstable's kitten, as it happens). My cat these days is Cleo, but I had no hand at all in the naming of her as she was my husband's cat before we met. She also answers to "Mog", "Madame la Mogue", "Pops" and "where's that cat?" but gives me very old fashioned looks if I call her Furryfeatures or Fishface.

Well, if it's the COMMONEST type of alleycat you could name it "Chairman Mao."

I once knew someone (a psychologist) whose cat was "Walter Ego."

And, yes, if he's the peein'est of the litter, you name him Liberace.

If you're a B. Kliban fan, you could name the kitty "Meatloaf."

And there are many wonderful cat names in T S Elliot's "Old Possum's Book ..." on which the musical "Cats" was based.

Ours have been

Velocette (named after a kind of old British motorbike with distinctive quiet purr)
Velcro (her clingy sister)
Gunther (named by her previous owner, an opera buff, after a character in Wagner)
Muriel (so-called because whe was grey)
Ishmael (named after the writer Ishmael Reed because he had the same big soulful eyes)
Ishtar (his sister, I'd have preferred Ishfemael but Marion didn't like it)
Mingus (I was on a roll naming black cats after Black artists)
Zeke (named after a nasty Usenet troll on one one of the cat groups, just to annoy him)
Chloe (named by a previous owner)
Splodge (he just looked at me and told me that was his name)
Marblecake (ditto)
Marblecake's kittens:
- Poppy (darker striped like a poppyseed cake)
- Eccles (mostly black like an Eccles cake)
- Gerald (he just looked like a Gerald)
- Siouxsie (weird punkish markings, so named after the singer)
- Pip (named after one of Marion's relatives)
- Ollie (ditto, or short for Apollo the sun god since he's bright golden)
- Polly (she just wanted to be called that)
- Courtney (another punkette and has lived up to it ever since)

I think the cleverest cat names I've ever thought up were for somebody on Usenet who didn't use them. They had two black kittens and were fixated on demoniac names for them. I wanted them named after two Black brother cats with impressive meows, Wynton and Branford.

There is a computer geek on rec.pets .cats.anecdotes who called her cat Cat-5.

SAt the moment I have Bathsheba Everdeen from Far from the Madding Crowd and Isolde of the White Paws from traditional tales. We have also had Merlin and Morgana and Deuteronomy and Nehemeziah. Old testament and celtic names work well too.

At one point all my cats had sailing names.........Cutter, Luff, Genoa, Vang, Hobie..................Think themes maybe.

Or, when we got our Cornish Rex, living here in the States we thought "Moggy" was sort of neat. Now we just have somewhat common names.......Roamin, Bixby, Sloop, Pepper, and Shug.

I have one named after a character in the movie 'Willow' (Madmardigan) and two named after Montreal Canadiens, at least they were when I got the cats..(Sheldon for Sheldon Souray and Mikey for Mike Komisarek and the Life Cereal kid because he hates everything but dry cat food).

My family tends to name our pets with human names rather than the tired old "fluffy" and "boots" and such.

We named ours (brother and sister) after song titles- Lukey (Lukey's boat is painted green) and Rosie (I know Rosie...) by Dave Swarbrick.

You just observe the cat and compare him to the rest of the litter.
If he's the fuzziest, you name him fuzzy.
If he's the jumpiest, you name him jumpy.
If he pees the most, you name him Liberace.
