Well, first of all I'd just like to give a shout out to Barak... You be da man, man... You gotta 'bout 11 'er 13 more delegates to go an' you is president... Forget that 'lectorial college stuff... College ain't all that it's cracked up to be... Believe me... I been there, I reckon??? I donno, maybe I wasn't but I found two college degrees in an ol' trunk that got my name on 'um so I reckon I nighta been to college...

But never you mind college, Barak, 'casue if I went or not ain't the question... Man, did you put a whup on ol' Bill and Hill... You be da' man, Barak... Hey, me an' you gotta spend an evenin' out in my trailer with some cold Iron City and alittle evidence to burn... I was gonna read yer book but seein' as I ain't got it, I didn't, but I hear that you was a stoner... Well, once a stoner always a stoner... Look at Bush... Ahhh, but this is the real crux of this thing... We got millions of other stoners out here just layin' back with a cold Iron City and maybe a little evidence to burn an' they be lookin' at MSNBC and wonderin' why Cheek and Chong ain't on with Keith Olberman... Man, you gottta get the stoners hooked up... We got votin' papers somewhere... Okay, if we can't find 'um and ain't caught no felonies then we can get 'um... Sho nuff can... Hey, I gotta a deputy buddy that says that you ain't gotta pee in no cup to get votin' papers so you need to get that out there...

While setting up an Obama booth at one of our local festivals (I'm pretty much a drop-the-cloth-and-call-it-done girl) this really clever woman pushed me aside, she was cutting, pinning, arranging cloths, decorating, making it festive and pretty. She winked and said, "Crafters for Obama!"

When I catered dinner for our local campaign office just before the primary, it was with the title "Unemployed Chefs for Obama".

Among the most popular lies told by millions of American adults every day:

If the general public only realized how very many of their respectable and otherwise law-abiding neighbors were regular pot smokers, attitudes would change radically, right quick. But since the sacred herb is still illegal, why make waves by outing yourself when it's so easy to fly under the radar? Who needs the aggrevation of being arrested? And more importantly, who'd want to be in a position where you're asked to reveal your sources?

There are entire networks engaging in the cannabis trade without attracting police attention because they don't deal in other drugs and don't brandish firearms. And of course for every such underground merchant, there are dozens of satisfied customers.

Everything works out on a regular basis, as long as everyone follows the "don't ask don't tell" rule. When a business-owner grandfather tells lie #3 (as listed above), who's going to disbelieve him? He's just like the nurse and the lawyer and the schoolteacher who'll tell you the exact same thing; they are all reasonable, well-behaved people who are never visibly intoxicated, who live up to all their responsibiites, and who are generally nice, pleasant neighbors.

And at least half of them are lying their asses off.

Now, before you jump all over me, I will concede that there ARE, of course, large numbers of baby boomers who DID smoke weed in the past and who DID give it up for good, in some cases many years ago. Some of these folks never "got into it" enough to develop a real liking for the stuff, while others indulged to excess and HAD to quit; there are any number of reasons for a significantly large minority of users to become ex-users.

That's why it's so easy for all the rest of us to make the same claim.

When we were young and all of this was new, public displays of civil disobedience were all the rage and defiant public "smoke-ins" may have seemed like a good idea to many of us.

Thing is, disinterested observers could be expected to readily understand the seriousness of sitting in for civil rights or of resisting the military draft, but not so many folks would be likely to respond positively to demonstrations for the right to get high in a different manner ~ a more pleasant and less destructive manner ~ than drunkenness. So, decades later, we continue to go about our business (or rather, our pleasure) without making a public issue of it.

Hell, I'm as guilty as anyone by posting this anonymously. I have enough problems and complications in my life without asking for police trouble, without being pressured to rat out my friend who buys pounds and sells eighths-of-an-ounce. I am certainly not going to among the first to come clean; I just wish others would emerge from this particular closet so we could see an end to this irritating latter-day prohibition.

Will the election and inauguration of a President Obama make a difference on this issue? I'd like to think so, but I'm not holding my breath. Well, not figuratively, anyway.

About half the baby boomer musicians I know still smoke weed on a sort of casual (or in some cases moderately regular) basis. The other half don't. The vast majority of them smoked weed casually back in "the day"...many smoked it quite frequently...a few quite heavily.

I didn't. But then, I didn't smoke cigarettes either, and everybody else I knew smoked cigarettes. I DETESTED cigarettes. I was one hell of a nonconformist, let me tell you...in my OWN peer group.

Now, mind you, I had long hair, and I loved it. Very long hair. I still have long hair. And I was a social and political radical. And a folksinger and protest singer. Yup. I just wasn't into inhaling smoke! It struck me as a really stupid and unnatural thing to do, and any animal I've ever seen would agree with me on that. Only people are dumb enough to deliberately inhale smoke in search of an alteration in consciousness, etc...

(Now don't take that personally, Bobert! ;-) Cos we are all stupid in one way or another. Me too. It goes with being human, right?)

I eventually tried the controversial weed on a handful of occasions in the late 70's, after having ignored it for many years in common company. I did that in order to find out what the fuss was all about and educate myself about it...I had already observed that it does not cause people to go mad, foam at the mouth, and commit antisocial acts. (grin) So all I had to worry about, clearly, was enduring the awful taste and smell of the stuff for a minute or two, and coping with a possible short stint of paranoia if I got scared by the high.

Fine and dandy. Well, it was an interesting experience, but not one that gave me any desire to continue partaking of the herb. Nope. I just wanted to see, like I said, what the fuss was all about. It was not about much, in my opinion! ;-) Having gained that knowledge to my satisfaction, I never smoked weed again after that.

I don't drink beer either. I used to drink wine now and then...very moderately. If it tastes good and it doesn't mess my mind and body up too much, I'll drink it now and then. Beer simply doesn't taste good...and it makes me feel gross, like I ingested a junkyard.

This could be what happens when you keep your system clean...or maybe I'm just unusually affected by it. Who knows?

I know this. Weed should not be illegal. No more so than beer.   It's just not important enough or dangerous enough to be illegal...it's not half as dangerous as beer...and besides, making such things illegal just creates larger social and criminal problems for people. It's asinine to make weed illegal, and it stems from a prudish and hypocritical social order that indulges in numerous conventional addictions because they are huge, established traditional businesses, while it persecutes others in an arbitrary fashion.

So I am a 100% non-user by choice, not even interested, who recommends de-criminalization and legalization of marijuana. Let whoever wants to grow it and use in personally on their own property without harassment, I say. If they're silly enough to want to inhale smoke on a daily basis, that's up to them, and they should be allowed the freedom to do so.

Smoke that. ;-)
