Politics is the great divider. It can cause a breakdown of friendly relations between people who'd have gotten along fine with one another under almost any other circumstances. That's because it is based, generally speaking, on the "divide and conquer" principle.

The party sytem only exacerbates that problem, needless to say, which is why I advocate the permanent abolition of ALL political parties. It could be done easily. But it won't be, because the people running the system would rather maintain their stranglehold on the public agenda just as it is right now. It profits them greatly, and they own the media...so don't expect to hear my ideas expressed any time soon on that media.

I think the problem is, they've formed the wrong kind of parties. That's probably because they've being going to the wrong kind of doctors.

The problem is that by they time they go through the fund-raising wringer and come out a candidate at the end they've gotten the industrial view of fundraising and there's no turning back, and no fulfilling the original reasons they got into politics.

True, Stilly. And that's why all campaign funding should come strictly out of a public fund (tax money)...and should be apportioned equally among all candidates!

That would completely eliminate the corrupt influence-peddling system that exists now...and it could effectively reduce the cost of political campaigns by, oh, 90% or more...with a campaign that only lasts a couple of months, instead of a year.

It's another thing you won't see happen. ;-)

Darn right. He uses them to set traps for unwary feet. Many a fleeing criminal has been brought down by a banana peel cleverly placed along his escape route in advance by Chongo.
