Next goal is Pennsylvania Avenue.

The day he stands up and takes the oath of office, I will feel we can hold our heads high again.

This is a good win for Obama, and a big one for his team, who have fought a long and energetic and innovative battle to bring on this shift in the tide.

It is an ever bigger win for the United States who have shown they have the promise of growing into an adult nation.

If they succeed in so maturing the world will forgive them the ugly acts of their teen years, preferring to remember what a cute baby thew were.

If I had some wine here I'd celebrate! I have a lot of hope with Obama at the helm, especially since I am sure that he'll bring good people on board.

On the other hand it is hard to wish this mess onto someone I like! It's going to be a HARD job. (I'm assuming, of course, that McCain is toast. If Americans are awake and have their senses working properly there is no way they won't see through JMc.)

I sure hope he's toast. I would be quite intrigued to see what Obama might do as president, but I have no positive hopes at all for what McCain would do. He's a holy warrior for the PNAC, and I've had enough of those holy warriors at this point.

Had to see what Hannity had to say. He's so desperate to brand Obama as a radical--constantly dragging in Wright, Ayers etc--that his own staff rebelled.

One said there should be a new drinking game--every time Hannity said "radical" you take a drink--and in 10 minutes you'd be plastered.

And they had somebody in to tell Hannity the truth---that all his smearing will do no good--since the issues are likely to be the Iraq war and the economy---and McCain is on the wrong side of both. Added to that, he's on the wrong side for women--and a lot of others-- regarding the Supreme Court, and other courts.

Calm down guys......So you've chosen a black man as Democratic nominee.    Well whoop-ee-do!!.....Haven't the Pubs made Miss Rice one of the most powerful women in America?
The fact that Miss Rice happens to be black has no bearing on her attitude towards Americas poor.
"So will it be with Obama"
Looking from affar, Mr Obama has always seemed a desperate election gimmick by a desperate Party.
The gamble has just come good, but never believe Obama will be anything other than a creature of Corporate America.

Im afraid the populace of the US and the UK have a much further road to travel before we can hold our heads high.
The problem is that many here and in the population at large still see "radical" as a dirty word......Ake

Its not as if the Dems were desperate for good candidates. The American Public should just be thankful that it was Obama who won the nomination. At least he's intelligent. He also has a winning smile.

Lets hope he chooses a good running mate.

McCain wouldn't stand a chance against Obama/Clinton.

It was always going to be him from a long way out, but that woman just couldn't believe it. She seemed so sure that it was hers for the asking, and she just can't credit it, that Obama has done better than her. She comes over as petulant and grudging in her latest speech.
The other big revelation in all this, apart from the fact that a black man could be nominated as a presidential candidate in the USA, was what a bitch Bill is!
Good luck to Obama, I'm sure if he's elected he will do more good for the image of America worldwide, than anybody since JFK.

OK, call me a pollyanna, but:

"Yes... we... CAN!"

I just finished reading David McCullough's "1776", and it was never so clear to me how close we came to utter defeat before this country was even breathing on its own. There were just so many times that one person, one weather event, one crossed wire, might have determined events. And throughout, it was the strength, courage and perseverance of one man and the band of people he en-couraged and prodded minute by minute, that pulled together the ragtag little army that suffered so much, and set us on the track we're on today. 'Course, there were other things going on, other heroes, but sometimes one person in the right place, at the right time, is what it takes.

To stretch the analogy, I feel as if our train went off the track some time back, and Obama is doing some heavy lifting to get it back on, and we'll all need to do some pulling to get it going again.

Dani

Akenaten, your point is well taken, but consider this; Ms. Rice was put into that position by ONE man, while Obama has the support of millions.
When Powell saw the light and left, Bush had to get even by appointing a person of color.
Can someone tell me what she has done that's worth a damn?

I just think a sour face deserves sour balls, and you seem to have the most qualified of both, there.

I remind that thirteen months back, the bookies were giving Hillary thirty points. Twenty months back, Obama was not being taken seriously.

The fact that America has a deep reactionary subliterate core mass was well estabslihed in 2000 and 2004.

I would suggest you guys chip in to help head off a white supremacist backlash instead of sneering at history.

You just might possibly might do some small smidgen of good, which you aren't so far, at least in this arena.

Sour? I'm not sour.

I'm as resigned as the rest of the world to US politics as usual, but ever more optimistic at the prospect and honor of being able to vote for Nader one more time.

Or as U2 sez "nothing changes on New Years Day".

I'm cheerful as hell that we have crossed another threshold to the death of the Bush/Cheney junta.

We all know that even a President McCain will be better than the ruling junta.

And Amos, the very suggestion that voting Evil Republicrat As Usual is somehow doing "some small smidgen of good" is laughable.

Not even a little bit quaint, Amos. Laughable.

And BTW, I STILL don't take Obama seriously, if you are talking "agent of change".

He is the Wall Street candidate, pure and simple. He is no different than Clinton. No different than Clinton. No different than Clinton. He is just another corporate Democrat. You and the 18 million other voters who fell for the Wall Street bait and switch have been bamboozled.

And you will find out just how true that is IF he is elected president.

Which remains a damn big IF at this stage, which is why you are so obviously bitter and sour about your man's underwhelming draw of a win this morning.

As a Canadian looking on and I'm so thrilled at the thought of Obama being president. Time to get the older geezers and warlords and blatant conservatism out of Washington and bring in a new generation that wants to do good in this world- time to save the world - and I've never seen anyone try to galvanize young people as Obama in my lifetime. I hope He and everyone on this bandwagon lives up to these expectations. Time to sing Dylan's "The Times They Are A'Changin" !!!!!!!!!

Shouldn't it be "No different from Clinton"? In which case why such a song and dance about from Fantasma or (previous noms de plume) it all these months?

Surely the right way to see all this is that, if Obama gets elected and turned out to be anywhere near as good as his supporters think he will be, that'd be pretty good. And if he falls so far short that the mass of those supporters get really disappointed and feel cheated, that's a lot of people who could be open to a more radical and direct type of political activism, and that could be pretty good too.

Sounds like quite a good two-way bet to me. (Of course he's still got to beat McCain...)

Well, damn. First full day after the presumptive win, and what is the first thing out of his mouth? That he'll continue to prop up Israel.

This nation has got to get over that whole idea. Quit funding their anti-social behavior, it is the primary reason things continue to be so stirred up over there. He should be looking at mollifying a whole bunch of women who think that "change" doesn't equal another man in the White House. He needs to look at another whole bunch of minority voters who are a much larger voting block, but who probably don't have the money and power of the pro-Israel PAC.

Politics as usual.

Expect more politics as usual, Stilly.

I would be delighted to be surprised by that not happening, but I have my doubts.

**********

Now, there is one way possible that the Bush-Cheney cabal can still retain power beyond 2008, and it worries me....that is the possibility of another "terrorist" attack, and a really big one, that's how. Something as bad or worse than 911. If that happens, it won't be Iran or Osama Bin Laden that did it or any other country that did it, but Iran will get the blame for it. No, it won't be Islamic people at all who did it...if it happens. And then Bush will declare martial law, he will declare a state of continuing emergency that will not be lifted, and the elections will be suspended.

That is the final extremity of madness left to Bush and Cheney if they wish not to let go of power.

Do I think they're capable of something like that? Maybe...

Let's hope not. I will breathe a big sigh of relief the day that Bush and Cheney and their entire team leave the White House for good.

And I will then prepare for more "politics as usual". That would be much preferable to the Bush & Cheney coup.
