Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Jun 08 - 01:27 PM Theng gyoo, theng gyoo! I've been celebrating hard...physical therapy this morning (arm's moving a LOT better!) followed by filling out employment forms, tests, etc. It's looking as if I have a distinct possibility of getting a JOB for my B.D. Curmudgeon cooked up our birthday lobsters last night -- cooking pot WILL NOT live on the floor at any time, out of the way or not!!! We'll go to Newick's later this afternoon after Tom gets home from work to get my ten bucks off my birthday meal. (That's seafood -- overlooking Great Bay -- prolly squid rings -- maybe shrimp -- not lobster; I eat that at home.) By the way, my up-the-hill neighbor has been threatening me with skeleton flamingo lawn ornaments. The problem with Mary's horribilia is that fairly often it fits into the decor around here just perfectly. (ClaireBear -- you'll understand when you see our home/library/museum/wildlife refuge.) Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Jun 08 - 02:03 PM You may send any extra skeleton flamingo lawn ornaments to me, actually. They sound quite fetching! Keeping fingers and toes crossed for your possible job, although htis kames it fidditluc to ytpe... C |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Jun 08 - 10:38 AM Thanks again! And a lovely day it was, too. Had a window seat at Newick's overlooking Great Bay and took a lot of my combo plate (squid, bay scallops and Maine shrimp) home for another meal or two. Washed the meal down with a pint of Guinness -- stout is the perfect accompaniment for seafood. Don't know for sure about the job yet, but took care of all the preliminaries yesterday except an interview with the person who actually does the hiring. It would be a very nice birthday present... Thanks for all your good wishes! Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Jun 08 - 11:18 AM Hi Birthday Buddy! Sorry I didn't get here sooner, especially since My best to you and the curmudgeon in the nest year and I hope we both have a better year than the last. I hope yours starts with the job. AND.......since I always want these threads to be different for Father Joebro I read them carefully. Jeri made this one when she said................. "Tom told me what he got you. I think you should look for a newer one, and I could suggest a few sources. (I'm using mine at the moment.)" Rarely is one presented with such a well crafted straight line. The nicest thing I can do for you on your birthday is to NOT post the 729 unbelievably vulgar and sexual punch lines that came to me in the first 3 seconds......As a matter of fact, the very first one is so damn bad even for me that I might have to delete my own post! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LINN ! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Jun 08 - 05:56 PM Actually, the gift Tom gave me , while seriously cool, is also very old, valuable and fragile -- not really a great thing to have around this menagerie/museum/library/wildlife refuge where I really don't have the proper place for it. So it will be photographed and then converted into something practical -- like a case of page protectors or summat. Besides, we already have a repro. Things looking good on the job front, but I don't want to jinx it by saying anything. AND my sister is home from the hospital, will be back to work tomorrow, and may actually be on the right path (finally) to getting her health straightened out. I think Katlaughing is right -- luck is changing as of my birthday and this year should be a lot better than last year. Well, at least this year I didn't have to take Tom to the ER first thing on my B.D. morning! Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: GUEST,Pamela from Ithaca Date: 10 Jun 08 - 07:58 PM Happiest of Birthdays and healthy, prosperous year to you Linn! I would have sent greetings earlier, but I took yesterday off from the computer... spent it in my favorite recording studio working on a new release. (You've heard it here first!) Magical Wilburland is in what had been a Baptist Church, complete with stained glass windows... and recording there is darn close to a religious experience. In any case - I hope that you find the best job possible with people who respect your skills and talents and will pay you more than adequately. And I send much healing to both you and your sister. (Ain't it great to have a sister?!) I wish I could say that I'll see you at this year's PMMF, but the cost of gas makes a pleasure trip of seven hours in the car more than I can manage. I'll sing some songs for/with you from here. much love, Pamela |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: GUEST,Vladimir the inhaler Date: 11 Jun 08 - 04:17 AM Salutations, glorious Bat Queen of the Universe! hope you enjoyed your batday and had a delicious batday cake! (burp) Vlad the bad |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Jun 08 - 09:32 AM No birthday cake. No candles, either. I'm the cake baker around here and I didn't have the time (plus it was too damned hot!). And even leaving two future meals on my plate at Newick's, I was too full to consider dessert Monday evening. And since I'm not currently employed, there was no workplace B.D. cake either this year. But I did have a lovely bowl of soupy vanilla icecream topped by peaches from a friend's trees yesterday. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 11 Jun 08 - 01:39 PM Yee hah! Guess I DID get a job as a birthday present! Just got the confirming phone call -- have to stop in tomorrow between my physical therapy session (in Somersworth) and a luncheon date with two friends (in Hampton) and grab a packet of paperwork that needs to be filled out so they can pay me when I start on Friday morning after my check-up with my surgeon. (Whew!) Okay, it's something completely different, at least for me. Meaning it's not graphic design or editorial, etc. but it DOES use my retail, sales and customer service experience. And it's a JOB, which is a bit hard to come by these days. The work environment seems good, the pay scale has potential (that means it's not great to start out with) but the benefits are decent, and I'll be working with a friend (who basically got me the job -- she's a fine musician, too.) and she's assured me the manager has a great sense of humor and is fun to work for. My friend is a real estate broker who's been working there because the housing market is, uh, less than optimal. Her boss was looking for someone mature who has a brain. Nice to be thought of in that context when every other employer, it seems, appears to be looking for a 20 or 30-something -- a brain is optional equipment, apparently. I'll be stuck working some Saturdays, but it looks like I'll have no problem taking the Saturdays off that I need. Actually, sounds as if the manager is quite willing to make accommodations to my schedule, such as my physical therapy sessions and Friday Press Room sessions, etc. What's the job? you wonder...optical technician at Sears Optical at Fox Run Mall. I'll not be employed by Sears, but by US Vision, which also owns the optical shop at JC Penney in the same mall. Customer service, fitting glasses, selling frames and upgrades, etc. And it's air conditioned -- definitely a plus with the weather the way it's been lately. And no parking hassles. An income is GOOD! It'll be nice to be gainfully employed again. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Big Mick Date: 11 Jun 08 - 02:03 PM BAAAAAYYYYYBBBBBBEEEEEE!!! Happy birthday to one of my favorite folks!!! I don't look into birthday threads much, but yours is one I had to jump into. Congrats on the job, and may it go well. Love ya, Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Charmion Date: 11 Jun 08 - 07:56 PM Congratulations, Linn, and may you find the interpupillary distance of even your most cock-eyed customers. Sometimes in summer I swear I stay on the job only for the coolth -- the hell with the Publick Good. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Jun 08 - 08:05 AM I'm starting THIS job entirely because it's a PAYCHECK (however meagre -- base pay is one click above "Do you want fries with that?" and, actually, my commissions will be based on its optical equivalent.) However, working with a friend and a boss with a sense of humor and A/C in the summer and no-hassle parking, etcet, etcet also come into it --plus I'm looking forward to learning something completely different. And I actually enjoy working with the public. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Jun 08 - 03:05 PM It looks as if I won't have too many more physical therapy sessions -- the arm had a (forgive the term) major breakthrough about two weeks ago. Not sure why; maybe just all the work finally showing. In the measurements done this morning, it's moving 30-40 degrees more in almost every direction since the last time measurements were taken. I see my surgeon tomorrow morning -- before starting work at the new job. Met my new boss for the first time this morning when I went in to pick up the thick wad of papers I have to fill out before tomorrow morning. I nevr did actually have an interview for the job. One of the other advantages to the job is benefits (including a good insurance package) for 30 hours or more. Not many jobs around with benefits and decent insurance for part-timers. I'll be working full time, though. Thank you, everybody, for all your good thoughts and wishes! Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday, BatGoddess From: GUEST,Pamela from Ithaca Date: 12 Jun 08 - 05:27 PM Woohooo! That's great news Linn! You're off to a great start for your new year. May the better luck continue, and your arm be moving good as new sooner than you think possible. Good people to work with, benefits, and the chance to joke with the customers while you improve their vision. What could be better? Ok, lots of things - but at least it's a start and I know you'll be great at the job. Still wishing Ithaca wasn't so far from Portsmouth.... Pamela |
