(for SF & Fantasy readers) Above, beyond clouds, Dragons earthward fly. Great holds in jeapardy Keroonward lie. Men, now, on partners, quickly rising spy .. Thread, unconscionable vitriol, Writhing-by. An attempt to summarise a sci-fi or fantasy book in 26 words or less. With each word starting with consecutive letters. Subject: RE: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: Rasener Date: 18 Jun 08 - 02:40 PM Thats where Tag Clouds come in Mo it would provide the most used word links e.g. laying hens size run grass slabs wood-chip |
Subject: RE: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Jun 08 - 02:11 PM People keep asking about when there hens will start laying what size run they need and should it be grass, slabs, wood-chip. We helpfully post the same info and anecdotes, several times a week, sometimes. |
Subject: RE: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Jun 08 - 08:56 AM Would that be something that would work on a different forum? Depends on what you want to achieve. At folkinfo we get very very little discussion and decided at the beginning even if it got busier not to try not to have loads of threads per song. Related threads there are rarely needed. We do relate songs though and can have more than one song per thread. It's easier to show what I mean, eg. this one with 2 songs and the discussion accessible by "tabs". |
Subject: RE: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: Rasener Date: 18 Jun 08 - 08:47 AM Tag Clouds seem to be the in thing these days. Have a look at the definition in the link below for Wikipedia and then have a look at the link below that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_cloud http://www.makecloud.com/ |
Subject: RE: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: catspaw49 Date: 18 Jun 08 - 08:44 AM This forum has a "grouping" function available to Max and his folks. Different people volunteer to group threads. The system isn't always perfect but it can sometimes be very useful. When a mod comes along and recognizes a thread as related to others it is added to the "Group." I have no idea whether your forum has that availability or not. I mod a monster racing site (one of many mods) with multiple forums for various types of racing but it has no Group function. Frankly the site is so big it would be a disaster. Spaw |

Subject: Tech: where do 'related threads' come from From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Jun 08 - 07:31 AM Where do the links at the top of some threads come from? At first they are not there then up they pop. Who decides which threads get them and which don't? E.g. more session rudeness hasn't, though we've discussed it before, Rose, rose, rose has. I ask this because I am a moderator on a forum about Downshifting and Chicken Keeping and find I am answering the same question over, and over. The site has a SEARCH button but this is not always very helpful, nearly every thread mentions 'eggs', 'chicks' etc. Are the related threads chosen by whoever puts them there or generated in some way? Do people think it's an advantage having them there? One thing I've noticed is that when an old thread gets refreshed some people read a question at the top of the thread, and immediately post an answer without reading the rest of the discussion, or noticing that (e.g.) the concert for which a suggestion was needed is long past. |
