Subject: The Folksinger ? From: The Shambles Date: 28 May 99 - 02:01 AM I woke up this morning with this very irritating pop song in my head. I can remember it being a bit hit here in the UK in the 60s, but I can't remember who it was by, or any of the words. I think I am a very lucky man.

Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 28 May 99 - 02:20 AM And Gawd, Shambles, what the heck time do you log in. What is it, five a.m. there, or are you on daylight savings time, too? --seed |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: SeanM Date: 28 May 99 - 02:22 AM For some reason all that comes to mind is a twisted version of 'The Boxer' On the corner stands the Folksinger A musician by his dream And he carries the reminders Of every crowd that ignored him or applauded Till finally he exclaimed "I'll keep singing, I'll keep singing, Until all your cash I claim..." M Line Breaks <br> added. You can't go to clicky blue thingy school until you have the line breaks perfected. |

Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: The Shambles Date: 28 May 99 - 02:40 AM It's 07.30 and I have to take Chudley out for a walk before we go to a festival and yes the phone is cheaper this time of the morning. I think the song was by a 'teen rave' called Johnny ---------? Or maybe not. |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: John inBrisbane Date: 28 May 99 - 02:43 AM He sang his songs to Mary Jane, The Folksinger He straddled a goat and the mountains rang, The Folk Singer At first Mary Jane was to be his bride, But as his fame grew he just pushed her aside, The lyrics so bad I can't abide, The Folksinger.
Assuming that this is the crap you are after, then I guess you are quite unlucky. And to make your desolation almost complete, I actually have the lyrics somewhere. Should you wish to continue on your kamikaze mission I could even post the tune.
Your future happiness is in your hands, but I would bear no responsibility for the outcome. I must request your authorisation in order to proceed
My sympathies, John |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: catspaw49 Date: 28 May 99 - 02:44 AM I'm sorry Sham, but all pop requests for forwarded to the ILS which is basically closed, a perfect situation, since you have basically no idea what you're looking for!!! Hot Damn... I love it when a plan comes together. catspaw |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 May 99 - 02:55 AM I still kind of like it. And I have the words and chords but no time to input them now. Get back to me if you still want them. My wife once told me she'd leave me if I ever sang it in a folk club. I did. She didn't. Pity. |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: catspaw49 Date: 28 May 99 - 03:10 AM Problem there Richard is that Sham remembers different words and a different tune too...Of course this could simply be part of the folk process. Anybody familiar with a history oor origin on this one? catspaw |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: KingBrilliant Date: 28 May 99 - 05:11 AM Shambles you are a swine. I spent ages trying to remember where it came from (you know that irritating feeling where you just can't quite get it - but know you're close). then. finally. It came to me. I had been thinking of the Postman Pat theme!!!!! (Pat thinks he's a very lucky man....). What's worse is, it's in my head now. (I am assuming this is not the right answer.....) Kris |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 May 99 - 12:32 PM I'm not clear from what I see posted here that Sham is not after the one I have in mind parodied by John in Brisbane (G'day mate, I lived in Wahroonga for 3 years when it was in not country at least more rural than semi-rural) - Which was by Tommy Roe. |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: catspaw49 Date: 28 May 99 - 12:53 PM Hey I do recall the parody. Seems to me it was by somebody else though. And I'm still hoping to run down the history on this one. I did a forum search because I thought we'd had this one come up before, but I can't find the thread. catspaw |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: John in Brisbane Date: 29 May 99 - 12:33 AM What do you mean parody?? I thought this was close (enough) to the real lyrics - maybe my memory has spiced it up a bit though.
Enjoy your weekends |

From: alison Date: 29 May 99 - 03:38 AM Hi, you sure it's not THE FOLKER to the tune of the boxer apparently ??Fred Wedlock?? had a hit with it a while back.. we had previous threads on this one but they must be over a year ago and the forum search still isn't working...... Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 01 Jun 99 - 11:26 AM Come on. Admit it. Which one was it? |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: Roger the zimmer Date: 01 Jun 99 - 11:49 AM The Fred Wedlock version(British alternative verses in the DT) was called the Folker. |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: The Shambles Date: 02 Jun 99 - 03:21 AM Sorry about the delay, I have only just returned. It was the one porodied, the one recorded by Tommy Roe. I knew it was Johnny, Bobby or Tommy. Anyone know how many of these chaps, there were? |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Jun 99 - 05:42 PM Yep, I have the Tommy Roe - in my elegant handwriting! I'll type it up offline (it needed typing anyway) and post it in a day or two. |
Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: John Wood Date: 02 Jun 99 - 08:40 PM The Folk Singer......Merle Kilgore. He used to sing his songs to his Sarah Jane The folk singer. His songs filled with love made the mountains ring To the folk singer. At first Sarah Jane was to be his bride, But as his fame gained she was pushed aside Sweet mountain girl would say goodbye To the folk singer. He let his hair grow long and he dressed in style The folk singer. His voice was pure and the fans went wild For the folk singer. He said Sarah Jane was much too plain So he left her alone as he gained more fame But sorrow come like a mountain rain To the folk singer. Lavished in glory, fortune at his feet The folk singer Awoke one morning and he couldn't speak The folk singer The doctor said his singing days were through Thousands wept,Sarah Jane did too He could not sing, now his friends were few The folk singer. Sick at heart in the mountains again The folk singer Now Sarah Jane didn't look so plain To the folk singer. Now the power of love can do strange things 'Cos love has made him sing again Only now he sings for his Sarah Jane The folk singer. And once again the mountains ring To the folk singer.....the folk singer... Song recorded by Tommy Roe 1963 on HMV pop1138 (I've still got this on a single) Greetings John. |

Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: John in Brisbane Date: 03 Jun 99 - 01:09 AM The lyrics are truly chunderous aren't they? In fact the more I look through them the more I see the potential of the song as a hammed up equivalent of Tell Laura I Love Her or Teen Angel. A happy ending is just not appropriate for this song however. Tommy needs to die of throat cancer and/or syphillis. Mary Jane could either dance on his grave - or throw herself into it..
Here is my quick attempt at a replacement last verse:
Back for some sex in the mountains again

Subject: RE: The Folksinger ? From: The Shambles Date: 03 Jun 99 - 03:02 AM Thank you all. It was worse than I thought. Nice one John. |
