Subject: BS: Single Issue Voters From: Conservative...YES!! Date: 05 Jul 08 - 03:28 PM I know that you're out there. People who like or dislike someone running for office because they are either for or against just one issue that you hold next to your heart. If you were to vote and the candidates were identical except for two issues which would be the candidate for you? Let's say that these two were liberal minded candidates. Which one would you choose and why? The one who backs abortion on demand but won't consider national health care. or The one who backs raising taxes on the top 1% but refuses to support affirmative action. I'm just interested to know how some of you think. YES!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Amos Date: 05 Jul 08 - 05:21 PM The one, to put in other words, who shows a strong ability to think for himself and see things clearly. The idea that abortion, an individual problem in ethics, should be a deciding factor in the issue is beyond rationality. Right or wrong, it is an individual problem. None of those other issues you name has enough weight to define a candidate responsible for four years of top-level guidance for a whole nation. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 05 Jul 08 - 06:14 PM Those aren't "identical except for two issues" - there are four issues involved, and no indication as to whether the notional candidates disagree on any of them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 05 Jul 08 - 09:00 PM I'd vote for the one with the cutest butt. |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Bobert Date: 05 Jul 08 - 09:08 PM The one who I feel will tell me the truth about what he or she knows or believes... I've had it up to here with friggin' liein' Karl Rovist sumabiches where power and the ability to steal my tax dollars is all that they want outta life... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Riginslinger Date: 05 Jul 08 - 09:35 PM The issues kind of overlap, and the most important issues for some of us aren't even up for debate. The Rove approach, though, seemed very effective. Like in 2004 he got operatives to put anti-gay marriage on the ballot in a number of states, so these dizzy idiots show up to vote against gay marriage, and end up voting on everything else. While that makes them a frustrating pain in the ass, I'm not sure it makes them a single issue voter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: SINSULL Date: 05 Jul 08 - 11:00 PM Twice recently I have received calls from the Democratic Party. Some poor sap mechanically reading a script about how bush's White House has led us to war, recession, etc. I wait for a pause and say "He could not have done it without the support of Democratic politicians." Absolute silence and I hang up. I am so disgusted with the both parties that for the first time in my life I may not vote. The only issue I am interested in is credibility. It does not exist in Washington. |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Rapparee Date: 06 Jul 08 - 08:40 AM I remember "credibility"...it was a long time ago.... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Riginslinger Date: 06 Jul 08 - 09:50 AM I think Jimmy Carter had credibility, so it must have gone away with Reagan. |

Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Rapparee Date: 06 Jul 08 - 11:08 AM Or Nixon. Or Johnson. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Bill D Date: 06 Jul 08 - 12:02 PM I won't answer questions about hypotheticals involving intolerable alternatives. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: Riginslinger Date: 06 Jul 08 - 12:19 PM Yes, Johnson certainly lacked credibility. I suppose the intolerable alternative would have been Goldwater. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Single issue voters From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 06 Jul 08 - 12:47 PM Since there is no indication that these imaginary candidates disagree on these issues, I still can't see what basis there is for choosing one rather than the other. What on earth has this got to do with "single issue voters"? |
