Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: GUEST,songster Date: 15 Jul 08 - 05:56 AM There is a singing session now started in Derry and is held the first Thursday of the month. I am not sure exactly where yet but I will find out and post the location for you. I has only started a few months and has very good attendance (and attention) I believe. I intend to go along to it myself in August (I'd better find out where it is myself)It is run by Jim Mac Farland now living back in Derry. Jim, an ex All Ireland champion was living in Dublin for years and was a regular singer at the 'Goilin Singers Club' Should be a good night, might see you there. I will post the venue address as soon as I get it today. songster |

Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Mr Happy Date: 22 Jul 08 - 08:46 AM Cindy, It may help contributors if you give an outline of your itinerary |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: GUEST,emurf Date: 22 Jul 08 - 11:17 AM Just to let you know there is no such place as Co. Londonderry. There is however Co. Derry. |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: MartinRyan Date: 22 Jul 08 - 11:24 AM Guest emurf They both exist - it's only confusing because they're in the same place! Regards |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: GUEST,kenny Date: 22 Jul 08 - 12:20 PM If you go to the "Session" website mentioned above, the man to contact is "Ptarmigan". Look him up in the "members" list, and you'll find lots of useful links and contacts. |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Gulliver Date: 23 Jul 08 - 09:44 AM Just for curiosity I googled both County Derry and County Londonderry. The results: County Derry: 114,000 hits County Londonderry: 1,210,000 hits. I wouldn't have thought it! Don |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Jul 08 - 10:16 AM Don Drop the "County" and repeat the exercise - it just about breaks even! Regards |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Gulliver Date: 23 Jul 08 - 12:02 PM Yes, but the claim was that there was no "Co. Londonderry" Co. Derry: 161,000 Co. Londonderry: 255,000 Contae Dhoire: 1,600 I thought Derry was now the official name of the city? Interestingly, the Irish Wikipedia gives County Londonderry as the translation for Contae Dhoire. Don |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: MartinRyan Date: 23 Jul 08 - 12:17 PM Don Re the claim - yes, I agree. I thought it was curious how the balance swung, though. I suspect it means that a high proportion of the "County" references are in official documents while a high proportion of the "city" references date from recent political events! Regards |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Paul Burke Date: 23 Jul 08 - 12:20 PM They should end the problem by renaming it Legenderry. |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Gulliver Date: 23 Jul 08 - 10:31 PM Very good! And the city, Derry/Londonderry: "stroke city" Don |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: Cindy Date: 24 Jul 08 - 05:52 PM Thank you very much for all the information. |
Subject: RE: Sessions Co Antrim or Co Londonderry? From: GUEST,weerover Date: 27 Jul 08 - 02:49 PM I'm just back from a couple of weeks in Inishowen and took in a few sessions in Buncrana, which is only about 12 miles from Derry city. The best of them you'll find in O'Flaherty's pub: the legendary Dinny McLaughlin usually takes part in the Wednesday night session at 10:00 and they also have a "breakfast session" on Saturday mornings which is very well attended. weerover |
