Subject: Music tastes and personality From: Stu Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:31 AM According to this report carried out by people with nothing better to do, what music we like betrays some aspects of our personality. Note that on the list folk isn't mentioned. Although I have a very wide range of musical taste from avante-garde electronica, jazz, heavy rock, prog, two-tone, pop and lots more besides these days I consider myself a folkie. What are the defining character traits of us folkies then? |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Jim Lad Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:46 AM I'd say we have a tendency towards living on the outskirts of town. Close enough to make use of the facilities but far enough to enjoy our personal freedom & privacy. Metaphorically speaking, of course! |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Stu Date: 05 Sep 08 - 05:49 AM Before I came to this board, I always thought folkies were politically left-inclined, but I might have been duped by the stereotype. The majority of the ones I know seem to be though. I have come to the conclusion folk music is fascinating because a large number of people interested actually play too, and I think this attracts creative people. |

Subject: Musical tastes - personality traits? From: gnomad Date: 05 Sep 08 - 07:50 AM This BBC Story suggests that musical tastes and personality traits are linked; hardly a surprise I am sure. Unfortunately folk doesn't feature in the research, I don't know why, any thoughts on what the researchers might have discovered (or why they didn't) about us? Threads combined |

Subject: RE: Musical tastes - personality traits? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Sep 08 - 08:04 AM Yes I've noticed that. Real men like rugby songs, whereas wimps with names like Cecil listen to cissy classical music. Very perceptive. Someone made a similar point in The Beano. |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Jayto Date: 05 Sep 08 - 10:48 AM I think Folk fans have a sense of tradition and a link to the past more than other fans for other forms of music. Most Folk fans know more about history and have an interest in history the other styles. I know that was my first connection with it. Folk musicians have a more indiviualistic against the grain mentality. I mean c'mon we are not going to be in the top 40. We are against everything mainstream and don't relly care what is going on or what kind of trend is going on in the mainstream. We do what we love and are willing to put up with low crowds, unruly crowds, criticism galore for not even attempting to cater to the general concept of modern popular music. I have said it before and I will say it again. Folk musicians are a rebellious breed. We do what we want and don't really care what the expectations and current musical trends the mainstream music scene is having at the time. You can't be a sheep and be a folk musician you'd end up locking yourself in a room and crying for days lol. I heard a guy say one time the 2 craziest things he had ever heard in his life is the term Friendly Fire and the story of the folk musician that was into it for the money lol. I know I put part of that up before but the meaning to me is deep. Folkies do it for love and personal satisfaction. Before I end this rant all I have to say is "If you have such a wide musical taste then I am surprised that you also have nothing better to do than start one more pointless thread." Huh????????? I don't see the link between time and musical taste lol. It must be some kinda new Industry trend and being a Folkie I missed it lol cya |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Jayto Date: 05 Sep 08 - 11:10 AM If they were Birkenstocks what are they now? lol jk Hey I have a pair of Birkenstocks. I haven't worn them in a while though. C'mon Folkies are not always the teacher off of Beavis and Butthead lol. That image is burned in alot of peoples heads. Folk has produced more than its share of unruly, scandalous, and hardcore characters. I saw a show here the other day the listed the top 20 most violent musicians in rock history and Leadbelly was number 2. |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Acorn4 Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:52 PM Folkies (mostly) don't:- wear baseball caps at a variety of angles.(in UK, anyway) say "wickid, innit?" type in "William and Mary" in Google and expect to find details of some daft TV programme. although perhaps possessing a mobile phone, don't shout their personal business down it while apparently suffering from a strain of glaucoma which causes them to walk in a straight line barging obliviously through all obstacles in their path. listen to "twitch" music on an MP3 player, or take a serious interest in "Big Brother" . Folkies (mostly)do:- Consider that they are experiencing "normality" when they are at a Folk Festival and think they have been slapped very hard with a cold towel when stopping at a motorway service station on the way back. LuvUall! |

Subject: RE: Music tastes and personality From: Acorn4 Date: 05 Sep 08 - 07:53 PM Sorry "twitch music" is normally refered to as someting like "house" or "garage" and normally has a beat which goes something like:- rubadudubdubdubarubadubdubdubarubadubdubdubaruadubdub...
