Subject: Songs for my Birthday From: MAG Date: 19 Sep 08 - 10:26 AM I used to ask people for a virtual song swap for my birthday. Haven't done that for awhile, but since tomorrow is the big 6 - 0 I feel entitled. Nice men are as usual welcome as well as sisters. I prefer those who think Dubya is an ass. and Sarah too. I've been playing a Waling Jennies song over and over: and when we find what we're looking for We'll drop rhese bags and search no more 'Cause it's gonna feel like heaven when we're home; Yes it's gonna feel like heaven when we're home. |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Sep 08 - 05:11 PM I'm not going to post it here, just mention that my newest song to play on my fretted dulcimer is 'The Ascot Gavotte' from My Fair Lady. You can hear it at this site: http://www.hamienet.com/cat400.html I don't play the fancy intro, but that may be my next project. When it's time to make the little bell sound which starts the horse race, I pluck the D string upstring of the nut. This makes a bright tinkle which never fails to amuse. Happy birthday. |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 19 Sep 08 - 09:42 PM have a few Australian songs by Peter Hicks & Geoff Francis , MAG & a happy birfday! Click on the black symbol next to song name here to listen to a bit of one of my favourites - The man with the pink triangle You were just a child, too young to know, When they took you from your home, And they pushed you in a cattle truck, In a herd, but all alone. They put you into Auschwitz with Three million more like you, A yellow star upon your back Because you were a Jew. They stripped, denied you everything, They would have took your life, But, somehow, it was meant to be That, somehow, you'd survive. For you, no food, no warmth, no hope, No combat to despair, Except a fellow prisoner's love, And, somehow, that was there. For the man with the pink triangle Would come to you each night, And he'd bring to you potatoes raw That somehow saved your life. It was four years till you were released; The war came to an end, And, somehow, you were luckier than Your pink triangle friend. He was one of the forgotten ones, A million with no names, Whose lives were never counted, With no stones upon their graves. But the man with the pink triangle Would come to you each night, And he'd bring to you potatoes raw That somehow saved your life. Near fifty years have passed since then, Now there's nothing that you lack, But you never can forget the man With the pink triangle on his back - And the life that he gave back to you And his love still live on, Each time that something stirs in you That wants to right a wrong. Now you give your time, you give your self In caring every day, And you give your life and you give your love To those who live with AIDS - While the man with the pink triangle Looks on in his own way, Knowing that the love he gave Burns strong and proud today. For the man with the pink triangle Would come to you each night, And he'd bring to you potatoes raw That somehow saved your life. Yes, the man with the pink triangle Would come to you each night, And he'd bring to you potatoes raw That somehow saved your life. ======== some of their anti war songs here No Blood for Oil! sandra |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Sep 08 - 12:35 AM Hi MAG....Try to enjoy the day but since that's my next mark as well I'll give you one from a male point of view. Here's one by ShebWooley that Kendall sang really well one night on Mudcat Radio.......... I JUST DON'T LOOK GOOD NAKED ANYMORE (Sheb Wooley) I stepped out of the shower And got a good look at myself Pot belly bald head Man I thought it was somebody else I caught my reflection in the mirror On the back of the bathroom door And I just don't look good naked anymore So I'm going upstairs to turn The bathroom mirror to the wall I hung it there when I was trim and tall I'd stand there smile and strut and flex Until my arms got sore But I just don't look good naked anymore Well I use to go out with the girls I loved them one and all Now they don't get very close to me They're afraid that I might fall Well, I went to the doctors For my annual medical exam Stood there in the buff Suddenly he said, "Man!" I said, "What is it Doc? Some fatal disease? I just gotta know the score He said, "No, you just don't look good naked anymore Well me and my wife had a dance routine Everybody said it was unique Now it's only when we're back to back That we're dancing cheek to cheek Well I went to a nude beach for a little seaside fun Stretched out in my birthday suit soaking up the sun Somebody yelled, "Hey! There's an old white whale washed up on the shore!" I just don't look good naked anymore Now my arches fell, my chest went to hell And my butt's a draggin the floor And I just don't look good naked anymore Again, much love and a happy birthday......no matter the age! Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 20 Sep 08 - 02:42 AM Kat, MAG did say she didn't want songs from folks who appreciate Bush & co, & Peter & Geoff fit that category. Anyway, how about a strong woman song? Unfortunately I can't link to words or music cos I can't find it on google. Frog Song by Sandra Kerr A young woman's walking down the street one day When above the bustle and noise Somebody shouts - Hey - then she hears 'em say - Hello Darling - in a husky kind of voice. What a drag - what a bore - she says - I'll ignore 'em. When suddenly she hears a croak. She stopped, turned around and there on the ground She found a little green frog who spoke. And he said: Look at that! Fwor! You're gorgeous, you are. Give us a smile, luv, don't be sad. I could really fancy you, we could make sweet music If you'd come around to my pad. She said: I don't like your chat at all, we're quite incompatible And Mother's warning I must heed She says - you're all cunning breeders, and the last thing I need is A thousand froggie mouths to feed Now leave me alone, crawl back beneath your stone She said, to make the frog feel small. But it's no use cutting someone down to size When they're seven centimetres tall. He said - Harangue me, you're lovely when you're angry It really turn me on - he sighed. I know it's soppy, but I like my women stroppy She said - I like my froggies fried! Enough merry quips - he said, and puckered up his lips In a manner that was most obscene. She said - I'm not going to snog with a completely strange frog. Besides you're squidgy and you're green. His eyes undressed her, it really depressed her Enough of that, she said - Just stop it. I'm losing my cool, you amphibious fool. Go back to your pond, go on hop it! He said - I do apologise. Can't you see in in disguise? In fact, I am a nice young man. But I'm not feeling well: I've been put under a spell. But you can help, and here's the plan: Take me home to your bed, lay me down by your head One kiss and then your prince will come. She said - It's never worked before - and if it does I'm sure That story won't convince my Mum. Still she took him home and said - I must just use the phone. To discuss this matter with my friend He said - Return soon, my sweet and I'll make your life complete One kiss and then as one we'll blend. She went off for a chat, and when she came back She said - Your vow of love I must refuse We've both thought about it, and neither of us doubt it A talking frog would be more use! ================ sandra |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: MAG Date: 20 Sep 08 - 07:06 PM Well, thank you one and all. How nice to come home from a day of frolicking and find all these great songs. Sandra, I like the Peter Hicks, although it made me cry. I'll remember the name. Kat, for whatever reason your blickies won't connect for me. I'll try again tomorrow. I sure haven't got all I need or desire, but it's a fun day. And a contra dance still to come. I'm taking a cake. Forgot to get plastic forks. I love that Margie Adam song. I used to be able to sing and play it -- ah, a project for tomorrow. Hauling out my bodhran and doing Rocky Road to Dublin on the agenda for this afternoon and I still might get to that. But then, signing on the the 'cat is still the ol' timesucker it always was. "and when I come to the edge of that silent sea, Tell me , who will sing for me???" |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: Genie Date: 21 Sep 08 - 01:05 AM I love the froggy song too! (Of course I have a bit of a frog fetish, princely metamorphosizing potential not required.) MAG, I hope you don't mind your birthday "present" being belated. I haven't found the right song yet, but it will be forthcoming. Meantime, just remember you're a SEXagenarian now! Enjoy it! :D Genie |

Subject: RE: Songs for my Birthday From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 21 Sep 08 - 04:33 AM Mag & Kat - Peter & Geoff write a vast range of songs - silly songs like Ned Kelly (based on a visit to a museum & souvenir shop), savage political songs, social comment & lots of other stuff. Sandra Kerr (mother of Nancy) also writes across genres, & once had the experience of one of her feminist songs turn up as an example of a traditional song. sandra |
