One might add that competent, undetectable, convincing lying is required skill for being an effective president.

I agree...and it adds to all the other lies especially about Palin and her record. Look, I'm not naive, politics has always been about spinning the story to make it meet your needs as a politician. Unfortunately in this country, that can win an election, but when it is, as you said, a transparent, inept and easy-to-refute lie, it's not only worth noting, it's insulting.

To repeat myself:
It's not about Letterman. It's really not even about McCain lying--we're sort of used to that. But such a transparent, inept, easy-to-refute lie...That's worth noting.

I do wonder what Rigs considers funny. But this like many other situations and with many other Catters is at the heart of a lot of issues around here. It's not good enough to just say I disagree, or I don't really enjoy Letterman, no...it has to be more like I don't like him so if you do than you're a moron....

I still feel that the Republican ticket is now being exposed with its weaknesses and they will do anything they can to cancel enough debates so that the Biden/Palin debacle...uh, I mean debate will never happen...

I'm sure he won't skip out on Dave!

Ouch! The part of the Couric/Palin interview I saw was...lets face it-terrible. She seemed unable to complete her thoughts, instead trailing off course. She sounded like David Brent from The Office talking to his boss-moving her lips, but what was coming out was gobbly-gook. I will make full admission I did not see the entire interview, but her answer to why she has foreign policy experience by being in proximity to Russia was meandering. Her advisors clearly did not give her a short, concise list of answers to these types of questions. I think, its starting to show now.

Couric interviewed Palin and McCain recently.

Palin is so woefully unequipped for the job. So far, any of the reporters who have interviewed her could do a much better job as VP. Palin may have done some work in journalism, but it must have been real lightweight, it didn't prepare her for any of this.

Ron, I think this IS his high gear!

Look, I have to admit the selection of Palin was brilliant. It took the focus off of him and put it on someone that virtually no one knew. IT took the focus off the thought that a republican was determined to change Washington from the uh previous republican regime, one that he voted with over 90% of the time. The entire country was focused on whether or not Palin could take over in the event of a problem. The campaign told her what to say and how to say it and she would grab all of the dissappointed Clinton supporters. The picture they painted was a good one and surely they could keep it going for the short time between the RNC and the election, right? I think she is being exposed for what she is, a feeble attempt to simply punch the ticket into the white house. To me it shows a man who thought he needed something out of the box to get into the house. A desperate move that was working, but hopefully it is running its course. But of course, what do I know? I'm just an idiot that enjoys the David Letterman show!!

aaarrggghh listening to Palin trying to answer Couric's questions - Palin is stumbling around not able to say anything clearly. It is embarrassing to even watch her wreck her own train. I can't believe she could even be a good dog catcher let alone governor.

whoosh! I have JUST spent 2 hours watching Olbermann...and Rachel Maddow. They sure lay it out clearly....as clearly as anyone CAN make sense of the circus the Republicans are running right now.

Olbermann admitted he didn't have any idea what the Repubs might do, but he sure made clear what the basic strategy is: change the topic every time the current one begins to get awkward! They are, Olbermann says, "geniuses at writing their own headlines" and diverting the press into covering something new & startling. This way they keep the 'faithful' hoping and stay within striking distance...hoping for some last minute headline that will give them a margin for ONE day...Nov. 4.
An interesting strategy for a party which does not dare to run on its official platform or record.

The polls say the public isn't buying it.....they SURE aren't buying the administration's handling of this economic crisis.

Olberman needs to add this to his list of Sarah Palin's Lies that he is counting to donate money to the Alaska Special Olympics.

Remember when she said she won Miss Congeniality at the beauty pageant?

Turns out that is a lie, too. It was Amy Gwin who was named Miss Congeniality that year.

David Letterman, whatever YOU may think of him, Riggo, is watched by millions and has many, many important people on at times. Being lied to when it is easily checkable pissed him off, and he took the opportunity to rub it in to those millions of watchers.

In 1972, Nixon may have WON the presidency by his 3 second cameo on "Laugh In", saying "Sock it to ME?"..(even though they had to coach him and do about 12 takes!)

Image is important in these elections, no matter how we hate to admit it, and McCain's image, already frazzled, took another BIG hit from Letterman and Olbermann.

"Joe Biden, on the other hand, thinks we had television in 1929, and that FDR was the president."

Is that the best comeback you can make? If so, Obama/Biden are in good shape.

Obviously he screwed up with details - but the facts do remain that FDR stepped in to bring the country out of the depression that began with the 1929 crash and the country floundered for three more yeares under Hoover. FDR was not afraid to go on on radio, starting "the Fireside Chats" and gave the nation confidence in their leadership. Unlike McCain who cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Why is he so afraid of a debate?

I'm sure you never make mistakes Rig while posting on here or talking amongst friends. Biden made a silly gaffe, I watched it too. Do you think he HONESTLY thinks there were tv's and FDR as president in 1929? He made a mistake, big deal. Folks with ritzy compounds in Delaware or otherwise don't ride home on the train very often as Biden usually does.

Can Palin get away with saying at the debates, like she did to Katie Couric,
Palin: "I'll try to find ya some [answers] and I'll bring them to ya."

Why, oh why, did they not carefully examine who this woman really is before choosing her. It makes me angry that McCain would put someone like Palin so close to the presidency.

The lag was due to the compulsion on the part of the Party followers for theatrics at any cost. Her clever zingers brought down the house at the RNC, and it took a while for the thater audience to realize that the scripting was clever but the play had no inner meaning.

Sorry, in re-reading my post, it was a little thread creep, not my intention. I think the point Letterman was making was that if you're gonna cancel, cancel and fess up about the reason. Don't say it's the crisis and you are needed to fix it, It made more sense to talk to Couric than to joke with Letterman, politically. I thought Letterman was right on and brilliantly funny.....

It's hard to believe that here we are in a financial crisis of monumental proportions and McCain is using it to get into the white house. He wants to postpone the debate on Friday. There are only 40 days until the election and 4 debates are scheduled. With the time crunch one is bound to be cancelled, if that happens, which one will it be? Most likely the VP debate again shielding Palin from any real damage in the media because lets face it, Biden will make Palin look foolish and the best that she can hope for is that Biden comes off like a bully.

I agree that she is becoming the liability that I thought she would become as soon as I heard her announced, but I am surprised that it has taken this long. I think the only shot they have is to avoid the VP debate....just my humble opinion...

Teribus, I don't know if this is a fair comparison, but Letterman, along with a few others, is something like Terry Wogan. Whatever the origins of the slight, it was a slight IMO, and Letterman was right to call him on it.

I got a witch-hunting pastor,
To make my tapdancing faster,
And an NDE Master,
Say, I'm a national disaster!

Got those blues
National disaster blues!
It's not easy
Being Sarah Palin
Can't you hear my
Poor heart wailing 'bout them blues,
Them national disaster blues.

I run a state of few people
But an awful lot of weather
We say yes, then we say no,
To the Bridge Across FOrever

Got them blues
National disaster blues, etc.

The folks back in Wasilia
And the bears are all agin me,
And the folks up in the Wildlife Zone
Are threatening to skin me,

Got them blues
National disaster blues, etc.

I guess I'll go to Washington
Where the weathers not so hoary,
Where folks who where the button
Will at least believe my story!

Cure them blues,
Run away from them national diasster blues.
Say good bye to Mrrs Palin,
She out on the campaign trailing
She's spreading 'round those blues
Those national disaster blues.
