Subject: RE: Great band names From: Steve Latimer Date: 14 Jun 99 - 12:07 PM In the Southern Ontario area we had the following, Live Sex Show (like Free Beer they sold out there early gigs until people caught on to the joke), The Killer Dwarfs, Pull My Finger, The Haiku Hillbillies, Lester Buck and the Flatland Mountaineers. My brother suggested The Sammy Lipschitz Experience, think I had better start a band just to use that name. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Ted from Australia Date: 14 Jun 99 - 06:36 PM Cairns bands-- FISH BUM LIPS and SCREAMING BUSH PIGS FROM HELL both punk/grunge of course. Regards Ted

Subject: RE: Great band names From: Captain Swing Date: 14 Jun 99 - 07:36 PM There's a band in Yorkshire called 'Cliff Rescue and the Helicopters' but I particularly like the Lou Reed tribute band called 'Velvet Underpants' Captain Swing |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: SandyBob Date: 15 Jun 99 - 05:06 PM I heard this one at Kerrville: The Sons of the Never Wrong SandyBob |

Subject: RE: Great band names From: Sophie Date: 16 Jun 99 - 07:41 AM I once met a guy from Boston who assured me there was a folky band playing there called The Big Bad Bollocks. Not sure if he was telling the truth, though. Sophie |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: WyoWoman Date: 22 Jun 99 - 12:51 AM Today it happened again. I was listening to the news on the BBC (we actually get that here in Wyoming) and they were reading a story about the fiasco at Stonehenge, in which a group of druids had obtained permission for a celebration there in observance of the summer solstice. However, a bunch of rowdies took over, stormed the police line (the police were simply there to protect the druids, of course) and began dancing on top of the stones. So of course the coppers had to bust 'em all and send 'em packing. The news reader intoned so seriously, "Scores of disappointed druids left the area..." I would LOVE to sing with a band named the Disappointed Druids. kc |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 Jun 99 - 02:23 PM If his Lipschitz, what does his arse do? For those who like their band names tinged with a hint of blasphemy, a friend of mine has a sh**-hot prog-blues band called "The Chosen Few" |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Annie T. Date: 22 Jun 99 - 02:51 PM I play(ed) with an old-time band called the Boiled Buzzards. Our recordings: "Salt and Grease", "Fine Dining", "Eat at Joes", and "Early Bird Special". I also play with a contradance band that used to be called the "Gum Band" (Pittsburghese for "rubber band"). Now we're "Band du Jour", plus or minus a couple players. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 22 Jun 99 - 04:08 PM I knew a guy who had a rubber drum, but he couldn't find a rubber band to play in. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Legal Eagle Date: 22 Jun 99 - 04:12 PM A friend of mine did have a band called "The Nathaniel Clackthorne All-rubber Band". Later he joined "Principal Edwards' Magic Theatre". |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Penny S. Date: 22 Jun 99 - 06:17 PM I've been trying to do something along the lines of Yvan Sconn and the Biscuits, but it isn't quite right, is it? |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Ewan McVicar Date: 23 Jun 99 - 05:16 AM Hey, Lou Reid and the Velvet Underpants was a great band! They used to do free openbair gigs in opposition to high-visibility lowbrow poppish openair events in Glasgow. The leader is still causing artistic discomfort in Glasgow. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:52 AM Penny, Perhaps your band should be called "Two ha'pennies to rub together" |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: WyoWoman Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:58 AM And this morning when my neighbor and I were talking about some pink yarrow in among her regular yellowish yarrow, I said, "You have mutant yarrow..." And then, suddenly, I said, "What a great name for a band: The Mutant Yarrow." You see? I AM obsessed. kc |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Date: 23 Jun 99 - 01:14 PM Hey KC, those rowdies that upset the disapointed druids, by dancing on the stones, were they doing the Hokey Pokey? annap |

Subject: RE: Great band names From: Penny S. Date: 23 Jun 99 - 07:11 PM My fingernails have got too long. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Billy Date: 24 Jun 99 - 03:34 PM I was in a couple of bands over the last few years where we'd make up a new name on the spot. Thus the "Unshaven" was born, as was "Buam Varscht", which I particularly liked, as it's literal translation is "tree sausage" aka bananas in Low German (Mennonite speak; a rural Manitoba thing). The keyboard player had another band with one of my all time favorite names: "The Manatees" or "Sea Cows". |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 24 Jun 99 - 04:01 PM Penny, Yeah! Sorry, I know you've heard them ALL before. But really it's a human nature (read folklore) thing. People just cannot resist making comments about names. By the way, do they still make 'Whitbread Trophy' in your neck of the woods. If they do, drink one for me. Bert Hansell (who's also had funny comments about his name) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Allan C. Date: 24 Jun 99 - 04:37 PM Just gotta post annap's suggestion for a band name from another thread: Altered Priorities. I really like it! |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: annamill Date: 24 Jun 99 - 04:48 PM Allan, Actually my idea was "Altered Priorities Ahead". What a great concept! Glenn is starting a new band and has been looking for a name. Some good ones came up. Someone suggested "Chaos Theory" which I think is great, but this one is even better. I can't wait to get home and make the suggestion. He like he name to be created by someone in the band, not from the outside, but hopefully he'll like this one. Thank you Allan, for posting this here. Annap (I'm back) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 24 Jun 99 - 05:04 PM I think 'Altered Realities' would be more appropriate for us lot |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 24 Jun 99 - 05:16 PM I was just thing that 'Red Dwarf' would be a good source for band name ideas. Such as... The Scutters Smeggin L The Smegheads Spare Head Number Three Mutton Vindaloo Beast Future Echoes Starbug Smoke me a kipper and so on..... Bert. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bill D Date: 24 Jun 99 - 06:03 PM a group of singers introduced themselves at our singaround one night as "The Acapella String Band"
and here is a serious..(well..) group from Alberta, Canada..(I used to chat with the bass player in another place...he has LOTS of neat instruments!) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert Date: 24 Jun 99 - 06:08 PM "The Acapella String Band" Were they playing 'Vocal Chords'? |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bill D Date: 24 Jun 99 - 08:56 PM they were indeed! *lol*..but they tried to use capos, and only two survived..very sad...(the counter-tenor went first) |

Subject: RE: Great band names From: GUEST,rob wright Date: 23 Jun 03 - 04:08 AM My wife sings in a duo known as Anne Taggart and Angie Wright. Boring I know but the variations on their name are Ananangie Haggard and Tight Raggard an Sh*te They did consider using their maiden names.. Gelazenas and McKeever but thought that no-one could spell it. Their friends Brass Tacks were following them at a gig .They introduced them as Brassed Off and Tackless. |

Subject: RE: Great band names From: ToulouseCruise Date: 23 Jun 03 - 12:56 PM Well, my name here, Toulouse Cruise, is also the name of my acoustic duo... though, as we have a few more drinks, it comes closer to being "Two Loose Screws".... a local band used the name "Wet Paint" -- they liked the easy availability of finding signs to advertise their shows... Brian. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Merritt Date: 23 Jun 03 - 01:42 PM Acoustic duo I'm in first considered The Curmudgeons as a name. I liked that. We wound up with Home Brew which people seem to like but IMO is a bland sort of name..sounds like it was selected using focus groups and marketing strategies. Some day I'd like to be in a rock band called Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand. - Merritt |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: GUEST,Dave H. Date: 23 Jun 03 - 02:16 PM Buckaroo Bonzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers There's a strange group re-doing AC/DC hits with a bluegrass 'twang called Hayseed DC. A suggested name "Buyer Beware" |

Subject: RE: Great band names From: Raggytash Date: 24 Jun 03 - 06:56 PM I was once asked to join, and did a very short guest spot with, a brilliant band from south Manchester named, and this is prefectly true The Nicaraguan Over Eighties Nudist Leapfrog Troop Sometimes wonder what ever happen to them, great fun band, with a wonderful lead singer, who for some unknown reason wanted me to take the lead om some songs. Sadly I cannot recall the line up, hope they are all fine and dandy |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: denise:^) Date: 24 Jun 03 - 11:29 PM I won't vouch for "great," but-- I once was at a contra dance where a pickup band was playing. They were asked what their name was; they took a look at the wall behind them, and replied, "No Smoking!" When I was a new player, I was thrown into a contra dance band with two other newbies, and we called ourselves "Tossed Greens." The most recent version of our contra dance band is "Contrariwise." (a`la 'Tweedle Dee' and 'Tweedle Dum') Denise:^) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: JennyO Date: 25 Jun 03 - 07:14 AM I run a folk club and a guy just sent me an email asking if his group can perform there. They call themselves "Hanging Swamp Swing", apparently named after a botanical feature where they live. At Easter at the National Folk Festival, there was a group called "Asparagus and the Despotic Lychee". They were a pair of feisty young girls who were rather clever and funny, actually. The audience liked them. Jenny |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: wysiwyg Date: 25 Jun 03 - 07:47 AM Our gospel singalong band is called the Good News-Goodtime Band. When we introduce ourselves we always point out that people will have a higher-quality musical experience if they sing-- loud enough to drown us out. Maybe I should change it to "For God's Sake Sing Along"! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: stevethesqueeze Date: 25 Jun 03 - 07:57 AM back in the sixties I played in a little band called "Great Greasy Boils under the Armpits." It must have neen bad as I was the lead singer. Our little village band here is called "the mad woman in the bungalow" which could be something to do with our concertina player!!!! |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: GUEST,KB Date: 25 Jun 03 - 12:57 PM This very weekend I shall be listening to a Jazz band called "frottage" - which means the furtive practice of rubbing oneself against strangers (eg on a train) for sexual gratification. Can't wait...... |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 26 Jun 03 - 10:06 AM JennyO - you forgot our friends The Wheeze & Suck Band. They are the only group who can drown out the coffee machine at Jenny's club - some of them are Morris men & they are sight for sore eyes (& great musos too). When Charlie Noble & Landlady's Daughter were visiting several years ago, LD said that Rhonda looked like she had gone to an audition for a string quartet. www.wheezeandsuck.com |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: JennyO Date: 26 Jun 03 - 11:32 AM Yes Sandra, I guess I'm used to them now and forget how unusual I thought the name was when I first met them. The first year I saw them was at Snalbans, and while talking to John Grenenger, he told me he had booked them for the festival on the strength of their name. I still love 'em. Lovely bunch of guys, too. Jenny |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: BoHaG Date: 27 Jun 03 - 09:52 AM Our band is called "Band of Hope and Glory" (playing mainly english traditional folk etc etc. However, the name I really wanted to use (which no one would buy) is "Umbilical Chord" |
