Subject: Great band names From: WyoWoman Date: 10 Jun 99 - 01:21 AM Well folks, Sparked by a thought raised in another thread, I was wandering if anyone else thinks of band names about ten times a week. For instance, I've long wanted to see a band called "Pyrrhic Victory." Zippy and the Pinheads. Bodhran Bopping Babes... OK, so it's not Hokey Pokey and the Druids. Still .... KC |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Jun 99 - 02:06 AM I'm sorry KC, but both of those have been used, in a way, before. Zippy and the Pinheads was the original name of the Rolling Stones and the Spice Girls were going to be the Bodhran Bopping Babes except none had enough talent to play a bodhran. catspaw |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: HåvardR Date: 10 Jun 99 - 03:39 AM "Kill the Bouzouki " is one of my favorites (as well as a good suggestion, it occasionally seems). One of the more daft is Scotland's "Deaf Shepherd" (which incidentally is a very good band) Håvard |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Ewan McVicar Date: 10 Jun 99 - 03:56 AM I have played in pickup groupings where the rule was "Whoever gets the gig names the band" - in order to avoid tax problems. Hence I have played in Glasgow with Audio Murphy, Sourrocks, Houghmagundy, Ba'heid MacBear, Eat The Breid, The Blue Sky Boys, and my favourite - Robbery With Violins. In Cambridge, Mass, in the 1960s I performed with a group whose name transmuted over time: The Bow Street Irregulars became Happy Jack's Thrift Club became Happy Jack and the Orcs became The Shirefolk. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Roger the zimmer Date: 10 Jun 99 - 04:32 AM I've mentioned this on a previous thread, I've always wanted to call my (non-existent) band Mal Canto and the Malcontents (for reasons anyone who's heard me sing willunderstand). An occasional band in Essex (reforminmg about once a year to do one last gig) which plays 50s Rock & Roll call themselves the Beverley Brothers! |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: alison Date: 10 Jun 99 - 04:35 AM hi, a freind of mine claims to have seen an advert for a band called "Shut up and dance."!! slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 10 Jun 99 - 04:38 AM There's a punk group in Toronto calls itself "Armed and Hammered". And Gwen Swick ("Tamarack" & "Quartette") back in her Queen Street days, called one of her groups "Hamburger Patty & thr Helpers". |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Kris Date: 10 Jun 99 - 05:35 AM I saw a group called 'Temperance be damned' last weekend - that's great name. There is also a local band called 'Drive the weavers mad'. Kris |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 10 Jun 99 - 05:41 AM One of our (great) local bands are called 'Carport Extension'. And the Teletubbies' Nursery Rhymes video has a bunch of guys called 'King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys' (anybody who went to Public School in the UK will appreciate that one...) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Brakn Date: 10 Jun 99 - 05:59 AM See this thread! Wonderful Performer's Names |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: HåvardR Date: 10 Jun 99 - 11:08 AM Some guy at an Edinburgh venue (Big Jim Knight at Dreethy Neebours, I think) called a friend of mine to find a name for his band to put on the poster. And John, slightly irritable, answered "you can call us flamin' anything" - and so he did. Håvard |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jeri Date: 10 Jun 99 - 12:21 PM A friend told me about a band he'd once seen - Boston area I think - called "Enormous Richard." |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: sam Pirt Date: 10 Jun 99 - 01:29 PM Hi I play in a great band/duo called 'AAAAG' 'An Accordion And A Guitar' The Guitarist I play with thought it up as a joke and we kept it!! Bye, Sam |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Date: 10 Jun 99 - 01:55 PM Roger the Chorister. (us) Norfolk 'n' Good (from Norfolk, of course) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: The Shambles Date: 10 Jun 99 - 02:11 PM Roger. There is a band here named The Elderly Brothers. Some of the names that so called 'tribute' bands have are pretty inventive, even though that is about the only thing about them that is. Trouble is I can't think of the best ones at the moment. Fleetwood Back is one and there is an ABBA one called Bjorn Again (They haved offered to play especially for Rick, I hear). |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Shambles Date: 10 Jun 99 - 02:29 PM I am "here", if you mean, as I think you do, England. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: The Shambles Date: 10 Jun 99 - 05:07 PM That last post was interesting, it certainly wasn't from me. Strange? Accept no imitations. The Mudcat is in trouble if there are two of us. THE (one and only) Shambles. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert C Date: 10 Jun 99 - 05:48 PM My band is "Unsafe At Any Speed." We say "That's our name -- not just an observation." We claim never to have played any song the same way twice. Friends of ours are in a male duet called "Bent Harpoon". They're completely nuts, but they're very good. One of them also performs solo as "Dr. WhizzBang". We also know a group of four women called "No Windows". They don't do windows and they don't do floors, but they do sing extremely well. Another friend who is a PBS listener says his dream band name would be "All Strings Considered", but he made me promise never to use it. I may be violating his trust by mentioning it, so please don't take it. Bert C |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Captain Swing Date: 10 Jun 99 - 08:17 PM I've seen"Norfolk 'n'Good" on the same bill as "Suffolk'n'Watt". (WelL possibly) |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: The Shambles Date: 10 Jun 99 - 08:30 PM Do they both play 'flat'? |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Captain Swing Date: 10 Jun 99 - 08:50 PM They did a very good medley of "Windmills Of Your Mind Mind" and "Yarmouth Town". |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Susan A-R Date: 10 Jun 99 - 09:50 PM A few years back there was a rock band in these parts called Screaming Broddoli, and they were good. I once played with a group calling themselves Russ and the Three Susans, because that's who we were And didn't they have a moment at the old Fox Hollow festival where they got all of the performers on stage and did something they all knew (Circle Be Ungroken, usually) and they called themselves the Wretched Mess String Band. I perform with two speech/language pathologists, and when I was working with blind adults I suggested we call ourselves the Eye Ear, Nose and Throat band. Somehow I was never taken seriously. Then there was the punk band at the open mike session who called themselves Death Cow Being from Vermont where the cow has become somewhat a symbol of our rural wholesomeness and cuteness (YUCK!) I rather liked this name myself, but the band sounded like a cow in the thros of. . . well, a fate worse than death. Susan |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: DonMeixner Date: 10 Jun 99 - 10:14 PM The first band I was in was called "HollyHock Rainbucket and the Picket Fence Skin Divers". I have always wanted to advertise a band name on one of those white sign wagon we see infront of saloons in New York State. I'd call the band "$2.98 Shrimp Buffet". I would also like to have a Glitter Country Band called "Alice Chalmers" I have friend whose band is called "Color Blind James and The Rock and Roll Experience". Don |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: RiGGY Date: 10 Jun 99 - 11:26 PM John Specker & I were "Country Mucus" ca1970 in Philly and the "The Athole Cummers" [ actual border tune title !!] in Newcastle ca1972 Eliott Ribner & I were "Cruel & Unusual" ca1973 [ your guess which/which ] RiGGY ps was there ever REALLY a "Kit & Kaboodle" ? |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bert C Date: 10 Jun 99 - 11:33 PM I really wanted to call our band The Old Crusty Minstrels, but they wouldn't go for it. Bert C |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jory Nash Date: 11 Jun 99 - 12:01 AM Once, there was a band from Ontario called "The Truth Hurts." But in Quebec, la belle province, their name was simply pronounced "Da Tru Turds." Cheers, Jory Nash |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Mark Roffe Date: 11 Jun 99 - 12:32 AM Ginny says "MAWG" (Middle Aged White Guys), but I disagree. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: emily rain Date: 11 Jun 99 - 01:13 AM i had a friend who wanted to name his irish band Blarney Rubble. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: darkriver Date: 11 Jun 99 - 03:00 AM In Santa Cruz in the Seventies there were two rock-blues groups: Oganookie was one, Poontang the other. (Maybe you hadda be there--it was a pretty sexy time after all.) doug |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Roger the zimmer Date: 11 Jun 99 - 06:11 AM I offer this one that's just come to me , no commission required: Van White and the White Van Men. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Den Date: 11 Jun 99 - 09:24 AM What about the scottish act Duncan Dissorderly or the Preening Accountants. There was a band back home who initially drew a big crowd to their pub gigs they were called Free Beer. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Rosebrook Date: 11 Jun 99 - 02:51 PM There is/was a trio from the San Fransisco are who perform sea shanties. The band's name is "Three Sheets to the Wind". (Two of them got together and had a cute, little pillowcase.) Rose |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: MMario Date: 11 Jun 99 - 03:53 PM emily - from posts I have seen in another forum, there IS a band performing as "Blarney Rubble" saw an ad once for "Heavy Meddle" MMario

Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jack (Who is Called Jack) Date: 11 Jun 99 - 04:56 PM A local rockabilly band in Ohio uses the name Hillbilly Idol |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: emily rain Date: 11 Jun 99 - 07:20 PM MMario, ha! is it based in minneapolis and does it have a guitarist named leo whitebird? if not, he'll be crushed. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jo Taylor Date: 11 Jun 99 - 08:38 PM Den - where were you? I played in a band called 'Free Beer'! (based in Exeter, UK). Only had to put up a poster saying 'Free Beer tonight!!!' My favourite name was a women's theatre group called 'Cunning Stunts'... Also in Devon - Eddy Stone & the Lighthouses, Spinach for Norman (there's a long & tedious story attached to that one), Malone's Rangers But, isn't it strange - when you have a new band, the naming is the most difficult thing...I was in a band which we called 'Mr Smith's' for six months - due to lack of imagination & anonymity (& because we played 'The Piper Through the Meadow Strayed', the theme tune for a Uk TV program called Mr Smith's Vegetable Garden!) - interestingly most enquirers for bookings imagined they'd heard of us - a cosy name. Jo |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Guy Wolff Date: 11 Jun 99 - 10:25 PM I dont know about "great" but the band I played at Milford NH's battle of the bandsin 1967 was called "Mellon Colly Olly and The Loving Subcultures. We took second place though I think Miss Milford liked us most....Ah pollitics>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Helen Date: 11 Jun 99 - 10:39 PM Mark, I like a term I invented which is similar to MAWG (middle aged white guys). Instead of Yuppies (young upwardly-mobile urban persons), it's Muppies (middle-aged upwardly etc). Has connotations of the Muppets - something cute which you don't have to take too seriously. I mentioned in another thread that an Australian band which plays at the folk festivals, but probably uses a lot of C&W songs is called Sensitive New Age Cowpersons. Helen |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Bonedaddy Date: 12 Jun 99 - 03:51 AM The two bands I'm in now are "Under the Water Lilies"(My festival group) and "The Rogane Brothers" (my working band). Some of my favorite names include: Conga Panic, Everyone But Ray, Kennedy Motorcade,(tasteless but interesting)...Old School Carpool, and last but not least... The Jacksonville Monotone Chorale I'm not claiming to know anything about the last one. Bonedaddy |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Date: 12 Jun 99 - 06:41 AM Shambles - that was an error of some kind. I was trying to say that I was in England and from your occasional choice of words Ithought you might be. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Den Date: 12 Jun 99 - 10:37 AM Jo this band (free beer) played in and around Warrenpoint and Newcastle Co. Down N.Ireland |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Jo Taylor Date: 13 Jun 99 - 06:44 PM Thanks for responding, Den - wasn't us. Interesting - we never heard of another band with the name at the time! Jo |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Ewan McVicar Date: 13 Jun 99 - 07:01 PM I used to be half of an Old Timey duo who only performed in The Grand Ole Opry, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. We were very sincere, so we called ourselves The Credible String Band. A semi-pickup acapella women's group I met recently are called Damsel Jam. A Glasgow band is called Steep The Feet - which may be too deep Scots urban vernacular to work for some of our viewers. As a member of Baheid McBear I once shared the stage with another group called Frank and the Shit Hot Three. They were not. |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Art Thieme Date: 13 Jun 99 - 11:32 PM Craig Johnson just heard a bluegrass band called (get ready) ED McMUFFIN AND THE BLUEGRASSHOLES ! Art |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Art Thieme Date: 13 Jun 99 - 11:35 PM I forgot a quartet I heard long ago in Chicago called THE FOUR SKINS. Art |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: WyoWoman Date: 14 Jun 99 - 01:24 AM Hey -- I'd heard of the 4-Skins, too. I once sang in the Gonzo All-Star Garage Orchestra. When we did gigs, it was changed to the Pecos Mountain Boys, which I found a little insulting because I'm a girl -- an older girl. I also joined a band once called Sunburst and they made me & Co. So we were Sunburst & Company.
A friend of mine sent me an email once with band names, many of which are simply to raunchy to repeat. You should know, however, before you name your next group, that the following band names are already taken: Alcoholics Unanimous
The Bourbon Crab and Apple Choir I'm so disappointed that Psycho Sluts from Hell has been taken already. Damn! KC |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: danl Date: 14 Jun 99 - 06:56 AM my brother had a band called Magic Apple which i always really liked the name of and it had a very cool logo of a green apple with a witches hat on. i always thought 'The Free Radicals' would be a good name. its a bit of a chemistry pun im afraid but thats what several months of A level chemistry revision does to you i suppose. ah well, only a week to go. ivy b* |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: WyoWoman Date: 14 Jun 99 - 08:43 AM I had just been talking a couple of weeks ago in my office about what a *great* band name "The Free Radicals" would be. I think it's an idea whose time has come. Take it. Go. Become Rich und Famous. Remember me on your way up! And good luck with your chemistry (it never hurts to have something to fall back on). KC |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: danl Date: 14 Jun 99 - 11:08 AM perhaps youre right. perhaps the last year slaving away over all those equations has been worth it if its produced a good name for a band. so now all i have to do is find a band... |
Subject: RE: Great band names From: Peter Fisher Date: 14 Jun 99 - 11:37 AM A favorite local band here(in Iowa)is Lazy Boy and the Recliners. |
