Subject: 'Star Spang. Banner Waving Somewhere' lyrics? From: katmuse (inactive) Date: 11 Jun 99 - 05:21 PM Anyone know the lyrics to song from 1939 or early 1940s (WWII era), "There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" ? There are 3 verses. Written maybe by Irving Berlin, or ?? I first heard this as a tune used in 1970s for a local NY State singing square-dance call; heard the song itself some months ago on NPR program, couldn't get to my taperecorder or pencil/paper fast enuf to get the words. Not on the database here. Trying to find it on various websites has been time-consumingly frustrating so far. Thanks -- Katmuse |

Subject: ADD: Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere^^^ From: Peter T. Date: 11 Jun 99 - 05:40 PM Katmuse -- here you go (off a 1943 Web site) There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere recorded by Elton Britt (1942-3) (written by P.Roberts & Shelby Darnell) There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere in a distant land so many miles away Only Uncle Sam's great heroes get to go there where I wish that I could live someday. I see Lincoln, Custer, Washington and Perry, Nathan Hale and Collin Kelly too, There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere Waving o'er the land of heroes brave and true. In this war with its mad schemes and destructions, of our country fair and our sweet liberty by the mad dictators, leaders of corruption, can't the U.S. use a Mountain boy like me? God gave me the right to be a free American, for that precious right I'd gladly die, there's a star spangled banner waving somewhere that is where I want to live when I die. Tho I realize I'm Crippled, that is true sir, Please don't judge my courage by my twisted leg, let me show my Uncle Sam what I can do, sir, let me help to bring the Axis down a peg. If I do some great deed, I will be a hero, and a hero brave is what I want to be, There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere, In that heaven there should be a place for me. Yours, Peter T. |

Subject: Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Jun 99 - 04:16 PM I dunno. Looks like some subversion going on here. The song is recorded by a Britt, and then Canadian Fielding wants to jump on the bandwagon. ...but the real reason I posted this message is because I have to know - Peter, where is that 1943 Web site? Don't tease us like that without giving us the URL. -Joe Offer, in exile in Denver, the hailstone capital of the world- |

Subject: RE: 'Star Spang. Banner Waving Somewhere' lyrics? From: Art Thieme Date: 13 Jun 99 - 12:47 AM There was a Navaho named Charlie Wumwear who was a wonder high steel construction worker. His sense of balance, like many Native Americans, was simply amazing. He could walk on steel beams hundreds of feet in the air with perfect balance. But oonce he did slip and fall 2 entire floors before he managed tograb onto a cable dangling in front of him. Another worker lowered a spanner wrench to him---a wrench that was coated with sticky tar. Charlie grabben ahold of it & was hauled up to safety. A photographer from the Navaho Times took a picture of the rescue and ther photo ran in the paper the next day. The caption read: There's a tar spackled spanner saving Wumwear!
