Or to be more exact, superficial thrombophlebitis. I have got it, know what it is and they are also looking for DVTs just in case. Had it for about a fortnight now and it is pretty painful but not debilitating. The anti-biotics haven't done much. There is a distinct lack of info on what to do to ease it and prevent it in future.

I know you people out there know everything:-)

I got it once the doc gave me; Hirudoid cream.(Heparinoid) It cured it after a week. rub it in 4 times a day. Never had it back yet (Touch wood) very painful. Didn't find a reason for it but I do have kidney disease. All the best.

I have that cream as well - I forgot! Does seem to get a bit easier on application. Thanks Eric.

I get ankle and lower leg swelling. They wanted to kill off the superficial veins, but I cancelled the appointment and want to talk to my primary care doc before I do something like that!

By the way, my sister is currently hospitalized with MRSA. Isolation, stuff like that.

They are doing a sonic scan on my leg tomorrow and in the meanwhile said it would do me no harm to have some blood thinners. I've had some strange things done to me but having rat poison injected into my beer belly counts amongst one of the oddest...

That cream is realy strange. Rub it on and it seems to soak in. Rub it a bit more and it turns white again. I'll play with that for hours:-)

The scan said I ain't got a clot in my upper leg at all. There may be a clot behind the phlebitis in the lower calf so they are keepig me on the blood thinners for a bit to be on the safe side. I did ask if two bottles of red wine would have the same effect but they reckoned not...

My father had a painful limp before he died, according to his next door neighbor. We know from the autopsy that he had developed phlebitis and he made and kept an appointment with his doctor, who apparently wasn't paying attention to why Dad went to see him. Instead of hospitalizing him and putting him on blood thinners he scheduled the heart tests a week later. (Dad got those regularly.)

Dad died of a pulmonary embolism from the phlebitis before he could keep either of those appointments. If the doctor (who I stopped seeing years earlier because of a misdiagnosis and I cautioned Dad about continuing to see him) had caught it Dad might still be around. He'd be in his mid-80s.

Damn.
