I've heard the Detroit river described as a great waste of space because it's too thick to pour and too thin to plow...

And I'm pretty sure if you check yer hsitory, the Brits prevailed on that side of the border as well... a little thing in 1812 or so... I seem to recall someones capital going up in flames... Now... who could that be eh?!?! LOL!

So where can I get the tune for this song?? Anyone got it as an MP3?? It reads great and I'd love to throw it into my show... Although I'm gonna spell it Sault Ste. Marie, like it should be spelled!! hehehehehehe

And here I was just about to recommend "Privateer", and rich r. beat me to it! :-) "Privateer" (they no longer use that name) are actually Tom and Chris Kastle, excellent maritime folk singers and also friends of mine. They spend half the year touring and also sail in the great lakes region, in addition to residency programs and workshops throughout the U.S. (They are also great fun to hang out with!) Their CDs can be purchased at http://www.schoonerman.com/sextant.htm and the site tells a bit more about them as well. (If you ever get a chance to see them in concert, be sure to ask Tom for "The Black Dog of Lake Erie" - it's the greatest!) :-)

Another batch of Great Lakes songs can be found in the recordings of a duo called "Privateer". I think they might have been out of Chicago. I picked up their album "Burnham Harbor" at a maritime museum in Manitowoc, WI some years ago. Later I found a used LP called "Let The Waves Roll High". "Burnham Harbor" is the far better of the two recordings.

Joe, thanks for writing them down. The "Daley" you were wondering about is Pat Dailey. (I might have been more careful with the spelling in my last post.) Here is his website: (www.patdailey.com) He's done a few Great Lakes songs over the years. Another good writer of them as I've mentioned before is Alex Bevan (www.ncweb.com/ent/alex/). Now and then you'll find the two of them recording or performing together.

Using the notes from Lee Murdock's Freshwater Highway CD, I thought I'd see if I could add a few corrections and some HTML to the lyrics Cap't Bob posted above. The Silverstein is Shel. Don't know who Daley is. Murdock's notes often have horrible spelling and a few other errors, so I can't vouch that these are absolutely exact. Some of the lyrics Cap't Bob posted fit the tune and meter a bit better.

Windsor Straits? Hmmm. That's a term I haven't heard. My ancestry is French Canadian, but I was born in Motown. I think I'll stick with Detroit River and try to forget that the Brits prevailed on the Canadian side.
Oh, and those other straits are ALWAYS pronounced "mackinaw," but never spelled that way except in the name of Mackinaw City. The correct spelling of everything but the city is Mackinac, but the pronunciation of both spellings is the same. Spell it wrong or pronounce it wrong, and Michiganders will question whether you are truly cosmopolitan.

The "Great Lakes Song" is on a CD by Alex Bevan titled, South Shore Serenade. The CD is loaded with Great Lakes songs and has become my favorite of all his work. Alex and Pat Daley have shared concerts and recorded together on and off for, hmm, maybe two decades now. You can find the South Shore Serenade and all his other CD's on Alex's web site. Just do a search for Alex Bevan. I can't recall the actual site. If you go there tell him Rex sent you. Also, Pat Daley has a web site with his CD's bookings, etc.

For the great field collected songs of the Great Lakes on a fine album with great notes, see __Songs Of The Great Lakes__ collected from many people by the late Canadian folklorist, Edith Fowke (pronounced appropriately enough "folk"). [Folkways Records 1964---FM 4018-------available from Smithsonian-Folkways as a cassette.] This is as close to the "source" as we can get from here in 1999 "The Bigler" is here along with "The E.C. Roberts" also called "Red Iron Ore", "The Maggie Hunter", "The Dreadnaught", "James Bird", "THe Fayette Brown", "The Antelope", "Homeward Bound", "Cumberland's Crew" (2 versions), "The Merrimac", "The Persia's Crew" and "The Asia".

I tried doing a thread search, a forum search and a dig trad search to no avail (which means it's probably there and I just cant find it!!!).

I'm looking for the words to the Pat Dailey song "The Great Lakes Song".

The chorus starts..."Mother Michigan, Father superior..." or something like that.

Anyone know it?
