Seriously. They've been missing since Sunday night. I've looked down the sides of the sofas, under the bed...nothing.

If anyone spots them could you give me a shout? Ta.

have you looked in the freezer? Friends of mine were always trying the freezer after finding a lost item there.

Or maybe you need to look in THEIR freezer, which might be difficult as I've lost contact with them over the years.

Mooh, we had a similar scheme here to distribute old glasses to third world countries

" Friends of mine were always trying the freezer after finding a lost item there."

My father once lost his dentures...days went by...until he went to get an ice cube.

My glasses are so much a part of me that I never put them down much.

(If your house is cluttered like mine, they'll probably be in plain sight, but disguised as part of a tableau)

I know what happened to them!

How do I know?

Well I have some friends who live a few miles away. If anything goes missing/can't be found in their house they say "That Dave has moved/lost/broken it" even if I haven't been near the place for weeks.

Therefore I must have put your specs where you can't see them - but as I have not been near your place I can't tell you what I did with them

Look in the pockets of coats, robes, etc.
===================
I don't use glasses for very close work, so I take them off constantly to read, sew, make jewelry. Then I don't recall doing it.

A couple months ago, a nice new pair disappeared. Finally my husband decided he would find them or die. He did find them - almost invisible on the black pad which holds the foot control to my serger. I had taken them off to sew, and they had tried to hide.

Heard hundreds of times from my wife when I lose something- she always seems to find it first.

There is a cute little song by Queen Lili'uokalani (Aloha Oe) about her grandmother looking for her glasses- which were perched on top of her head. Have it on cd.

They're not down that gap between the handbrake and the seat, either. That's one place mine used to hide in before I put a legrope on them and signified to all and sundry I was truly an old fart.

I reckon the ones in the freezer in Quebec are probably them.

Yes, Ruth, it is a scientific fact that glasses have a magnetic attraction for one another. The new pair will gradually draw the old pair out of its hiding place, and one day you will look behind a cookbook, say, and there they will be.

This is true of scissors as well.

My wife found a jar of Gorilla Snot under our sofa yesterday. (For those unfamiliar with Gorilla Snot, it's a product made to help guitarists hold onto their picks.) The lid wasn't very tightly sealed and the Gorilla Snot had turned into a single large Gorilla Booger (Gorilla Bogie to our UK friends). It was pretty obvious that it wasn't Ruth's glasses, even to an idiot like me.

A whole jar? We only get Gorilla Snot in those tubes that you put in a caulking gun. I'm envious.

And all I found under my sofa (apart from dust bunnies) was a "Your rights at work" campaign badge from last year; almost a heritage item.

This was one of only three songs my dad ever taught me.. (the other two were 'when this bloody war is over' and 'how can you tell when a guinea pig is please if he hasn't got a tail to wag'), and his version went:

My eyes are blind, I cannot see,
I left my specs in the WC,
I left my specs in the WC!

I'd look there if I were you.

Or under the piano. It's a well known fact that pianos - particularly stubborn uprights - have their own gravity field. Anything small and valuable will end up under the piano, even if the piano is in a different room, or, in one case I know of, in a different house! Our whole dining room (where the piano is) floor slopes down towards the window in the opposite wall from the one with the piano against it. Anything you drop on the floor will end up under the piano which is at the highest point of the floor... the only explaination is gravity fields.

Or gnomes.

I vote for the gnomes, Liz. Walk past an English garden at midnight, and the gnome will not be in place. Why not? Because it's in the house, hiding glasses, scissors and checkbooks.

In the movie 'Amalie,' they only THOUGHT the gnome was getting about with the aid of friends...

As Gnu says. Been there, done that! At least mine were just safety glasses.
A fishing mate managed to lose his specs over the side, which makes a change from false teeth.

BillD, the washer hides socks between the two drums. Comes from putting a pile of stuff on the top and pushing it down into the inner drum. Odd escapees slip between the drums. You'll find the socks (chewed up) when the serviceman removes them from the pump.

I think Rowan must be an old surfie as well as an old folkie - surfers use leg ropes to attach themselves to their board so they don't lose it when they fall off! (scroll down for pic)

Very foxy, Sandra.

I do confess to being in the Point Leo Surf Club (Westernport Bay, where the surf rivals that of Tootgarook, on Port Philip Bay) but that was before surfers used legropes.

But I started my familiarity with legropes in South Gippsland, well before herringbones came into fashion, where dairy farmers would use a legrope to stop the cow kicking the cups off the teats or, for handmilkers, kicking the bucket over.

And I first tied my glasses on with one when climbing at Mt Arapiles, when I was a much younger fart. A friend had told me that the Vic. Optometry College was doing a deal for students who wanted contact lenses, whereby the prescription cost was waived and only the cost of the lenses was required of the student. Being very myopic (in most senses) I put off making an appointment for a while. At Mt Arapiles I was thrutching my way through an awkward bit of shrubbery about 150' up a new climb.

I'd taken the precaution of tying my specs on but they got flicked off. Fortunately they landed on my shoulder, as I was unable to see details of the rock ahead and couldn't even see my footholds in focus; I couldn't even tie off and abseil down, as my rope was the standard 120' and I would have been left 30' above the foot of the climb. Bother!!!

So I made an appointment to the VOC, turned up and waited my turn to be dealt with by one of the trainees. A young lady with a clipboard called my name and took me to the cubicles where the eye testing clobber was located; we sat in our respective places. After the 'name, rank & serial no.' stuff she asked,
"Why do you want contact lenses?"
"Why do you ask?" I responded.
"Most people say 'Sport', which is really just disguised vanity" she replied.
"Well, sport" I offered. "Actually, I've got three reasons for wanting them" I said.

I told her the Mt Arapiles story and followed it up with my irritation when, during winter, every time I walked into the Sports Union showers after a Judo Club night, the (cold) lenses of my glasses would instantly fog over in the humid atmosphere. I then described my third reason.

"They get in the way in situations of great propinquity" I said.
"Huh?" she grunted.
I explained, "When you're having a nice cuddly session with a lady you're interested in, the glasses get in the way. But if you take them off it has exactly the same effect as if you'd dropped your daks and whipped a condom out of your pocket! That's the end of that."
"Oh!" she commented and we continued with measuring my eyes.

A couple of years later I needed to go to the VOC for another appointment. The young lad who led me to the cubicle looked at the clipboard and commented, "You're a bit of a climber."
"How did you know that?" I asked.
"It's given here as one of the two reasons you wanted contact lenses" he replied.
"Only two reasons?" I asked.
"Yeah. The other was your glasses fogging up in the Sports Union."

So I told him the third reason and it transpired that the young lady (whose name I still remember) was now his practicum supervisor.
"Well, you get right up her about censoring people's reasons for wanting contact lenses," I said. "If wearing glasses gets in the way of a young man's courting behaviour and this can be rectified by wearing contact lenses, that's a perfectly good reason for wanting them."

But my reading glasses need a bit of a legrope so I can keep track of them.

Cheers, Rowan

I have to admit, thanks to a decent dose of OCD I very rarely lose anything.

Donuel reminded me....

When I was in college 40 years ago, I was working part time for the physical plant. A friend & I were on a rolling scaffold, about 30 ft. high, rewiring lights in a gymnasium ceiling. I looked over the edge and my glasses sliped off and did slow tumble (It felt like 10 minutes) to the wooden court. *SNAP*...didn't break the lenses, but snapped in half at the bridge.
I was a POOR college student, so I drilled a hole in the plastic on each piece, cut off a small nail and epoxied the 2 halves together. Being a small joint under constant strain, it came loose and had to be redone every few weeks. (sometimes I cut small strips of tape to hold them till I could get more glue)
I think I lived that way for over a year till I could afford to replace them.

I guess if I had actually lost them into never-never land, I'd have found the money sooner!
