Subject: BS: Got a New Puppy From: olddude Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:00 AM Well rescued a 3 month old mini weiner dog puppy. Now I have 4 dogs (sucker for punishment) I swear it is easier to cut my leg off with a broken piece of glass then to get a baby weiner dog to go outside. After she does her thing or catch her in the act ... I put her out,. I put her out in time increments so do your thing. Plays outside, comes in does her business. now she does her thing and runs to the door to go outside .. yup thats it, I am suppose to Pee then go outside ... Oh boy .. she still doesn't get it but eventually she will. I forgot how hard it is to teach a weiner dog. Love the little sod to pieces however |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: bobad Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:19 AM Congrats and good on you, dude, for rescuing. A new puppy always reminds us of the joys inherent in training, and how soon we forget. Thank goodness that phase passes before you know it and the rewards kick in and overshadow those fun times. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: katlaughing Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:21 AM I am sure Little Hawk will be along with all kinds of helpful advise...he's got a couple of these, at least.:-) Congratulations and may she be the brightest of blessings in your life; you sure are in hers! kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Jeri Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:21 AM You may be as hard to train as a weiner dog, Olddude! Take the WD outside and let her back in once she pees/poops. Going inside will be her reward, and she'll possibly be empty then too. You may have to wait a while the first few times, but load her up on liquids, then take her outside. The first time you're successful, give yourself a treat such as a beer or a cookies, or say, 'GOOD OLDDUDE!' In no time at all, you'll remember to give the reward AFTER the correct behavior. Of the dog, I mean... maybe. (I'm trying to be funny. If it's not working, just ignore me.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Ebbie Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:24 AM Surrounded by three other dogs your puppy should catch on quickly. Herd them all out at the same time, praise extravagantly and then call them all back in. Then when the puppy squats indoors, scold and scoop her/him up and dump outdoors. But, I agree, frustrating as the process can be it is also great fun. Congratulations to you both! |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: wysiwyg Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:30 AM Ditto and extend what Jeri said. Also, put the food and water on a schedule so you can predictably know how long it takes to go thru her and what her pee/poop schedule is. She'll extend that as her bladder/bowel grow to be better able to hold it. She will also, as she matures, PREFER not to do it in the "den" (house). You can also let her see you pick up the mistakes and throw them out of the den, literally. Just remember that before they get to that stage of "outdoors-only" readiness they naturally pee and poop in the nest, IN the den, so mama can lick up the result (she licks newborn butts to stimulate it) and keep the nest clean. (Not coprophagia-- no odder than swallowing our own snot when we lack kleenex-- just a secretion when pups are tiny because it's just undigested mama-milk.) So-- if she pees/craps on you, when you snuggle, you're just mom. Raise her right. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: olddude Date: 08 Nov 08 - 11:57 AM The other dogs think she is the greatest thing in the world. Always playing and kissing ... so much fun to watch. I have two other older weiner dogs that I rescued and 1 very big fat black lab called Gus Gus. My little neightbor boy asked why his name was Gus Gus. I said because he doesn't answer to the first Gus :-). My lab was 1 of 4 newborns that some miserable person left in a box when they were 1 day old. The cords were attached their eyes were closed. My daughter and I (when she was in vet school) bottle fed them and raised them. The other three all went to wonderful homes. Gus, the biggest of the labs stayed here with the two weiners. Now I have 3 weiners and 1 big fat lab who adores the baby. This little puppy is a long haired full breed mini. She is brown with curly ears. I cannot understand why people abuse something so helpless. She now has the run of the house. Luckily I have lots of room since the kids are gone and a very large fenced in yard. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: GUEST,heric Date: 08 Nov 08 - 12:21 PM Our shih tzu took almost a year to figure it out, even with puppy pads in the kitchen that she is still free to use. And all she ever does is try to please. I'm told they are really slow at this, too. But we have a tiny house, and living in a urinal was (almost) enough to make a grown man cry. You'll have to take your lady-friends out to restaurants, instead of cooking at home. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Jeri Date: 08 Nov 08 - 12:25 PM (Any typos in my first message were just embarrassing typos, and have been mysteriously fixed.) I can't understand how anyone could abuse and creature that depends on them for protection. I wish I had a lifestyle that allowed me to have a dog, or a cat or a hamster or some other warm furry critter. I'm not home enough, and I'm not sure I'm responsible enough. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: LilyFestre Date: 08 Nov 08 - 12:27 PM At one point we had 10+ dogs in the house. My biggest piece of advice to you while potty training a pup is to get her OUTSIDE the second she wakes up. Praise and reward profusely for going potty outside. Also, taking her to the same spot until she gets the hang of it is a good thing to do. I'd also suggest, if you are home with her, to take her out once an hour and stand with her until she goes. No playing. She will catch on....hope you are in an area where the weather is still somewhat warm. It can be difficult to train low-to-the-ground dogs to pee outside when their bellies are touching the snow.....they hate that. So...if it is snowing, be sure to shovel a path to her potty area. We always had more difficulty potty training the smaller dogs than the larger ones but they do eventually get it. Love her up anc suck in that puppy breath while you can...it won't last long!!!! Congrats to the both of you!!! Michelle, fellow sucker for almost any kind of animal |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: GUEST,heric Date: 08 Nov 08 - 12:34 PM >training a pup is to get her OUTSIDE the second she wakes up< This is the only way it worked and still works. I tried standing out there in the yard, waiting on the dog to pee or crap, but that was such a ridiculous endeavour, we have a deal now -morning walk, no problems. She has trained me well. I even pick up her crap for her. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Riginslinger Date: 08 Nov 08 - 12:39 PM I had a full sized dachshund. He died last year of old age. Best dog I ever had, but I never did get him totally toilet trained. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Nov 08 - 04:17 PM Our two shih tzus are finally reliably housebroken after three years. They weren't bad after about a year, but we had to take them out on a regular schedule. Lately, my dog Ralph, who seems to be the spokesman for the two, will come up to the door of my office and bark softly and do a little dance when he needs to go out. My stepson insists housebreaking took so long because we didn't do it right and because we spoiled the dogs by leaving newspaper out for them to pee on - but it seemsed to us that newspaper was a far better receptacle than our new oriental rug. But you know how it is - teenagers are very good at giving criticism, and not so good at actually being around to take the dogs out. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Sorcha Date: 08 Nov 08 - 04:58 PM You WILL be assimilated! LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: GUEST,heric Date: 08 Nov 08 - 05:51 PM Okay I admit it. The new oriental throw rug did bring me to tears. Well, no - maybe just a lump in my throat. Despair. It is still rolled up and stored (vertically!) in another, off-limits room. |

Subject: BS: Got a New Poppy From: skipy Date: 10 Nov 08 - 06:39 PM Bought 4 this year, I keep losing them, but what the hell if you are in the pub or a shop & they still have then on the bar / counter, buy another one, it sure adds up for those who NEED it! Skipy |

Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: GUEST,Justin Urqhart Date: 10 Nov 08 - 07:46 PM Just got a Husky, pure white, he is lovely. Bit of a handful at the moment. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: kendall Date: 11 Nov 08 - 09:45 AM It baffles me how there can be such a difference in house training different breeds of dog. I've had 3 Labrador retrievers, and none of them was a problem to house break. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Maryrrf Date: 11 Nov 08 - 01:53 PM Does anybody watch the program It's Me or the Dog ? I love that show. It's amazing what can be done if you understand how dogs think. Mind you, my dog trained me long ago and she rules the roost so it's too late for me - but might be useful for somebody training a puppy. Good fun anyway! |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Ernest Date: 11 Nov 08 - 02:01 PM How long have you got her now? It might take some time since her attention might be distracted by the other dogs and she just forgot that there was some urgent business... Also pray for warm and dry weather - dachshounds don`t like to get cold, wet bellies... Best Ernest P.S.: Mudcatteress bfdk`s dachshound has its own website here |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Mrrzy Date: 11 Nov 08 - 02:05 PM Just put her outside all the time randomly, and one of these days she'll pee, then you can praise her to the skies... apparently that works better than waiting for the pee and then putting outside. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: olddude Date: 13 Dec 08 - 12:33 AM Puppy update well everytime she would pee on the floor I would yell and put her out ... So then she would pee on the floor then run to the door to go outside. She figured .. Oh yea, I suppose to go outside after I pee on the floor ... good grief Today, she walk over to the door and asked to go out. She went out and Pee'd I was thrilled ... I did a good girl .. good girl .. the little weiner dog came inside running around ... yes yes I am a good girl then hunched over and crapped on my floor !! |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: SINSULL Date: 13 Dec 08 - 11:02 AM Baby steps, old dude. LOL Seamus is here today. He does all his business outside then comes in and wipes his butt on the furniture - well covered in sheets. |
Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: annamill Date: 13 Dec 08 - 12:09 PM I just adopted, or was coerced into adopting, a beautiful little 14 year old Maltese with very poor eyesight. When I went to pick up my little maxie, also a Maltese, at the groomer, out she comes with Amber under her arm. She tells me that Amber's mistress had passed and no one wanted the dog because she was so old and couldn't see so they were going to put her down. I'm old and my eyesight is failing SO... now we have a beautiful little old girl that is so full of life and playful...and not really housebroken yet. She just has to get used to our schedule, or we have to get used to hers. LOL. Good luck with your new baby. I just don't see how anyone could kill this little beauty. Love, Annamill |

Subject: RE: BS: Got a New Puppy From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Dec 08 - 01:56 PM There is a great National Public Radio program from Wisconsin called Calling All Pets that is hosted by animal behaviorist Patricia McConnell. She's very good, and has described for many callers how to house-train their dogs. The process that works best seems to be to use a crate and to take them out a little after they eat. Also using food rewards after they go, and having a specific word you use to train them to go. You can listen to archived episodes. SRS |
