Subject: RE: BS: OOOPS-we lost a nuclear weapon. From: Wolfgang Date: 11 Nov 08 - 09:10 AM 78252, were there that many of these weapons produced in the USA? During WWII a branch of math has made estimates from the serial numbers spotted as to the total number of these weapons, the fraction already used or wrecked, and the rate of replacement. Since these times most of the military does not use serial numbers in the usual informative way. I don't expect the US forces to use the old system. Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: BS: OOOPS-we lost a nuclear weapon. From: artbrooks Date: 11 Nov 08 - 09:58 AM Wolfgang is entirely correct. Having had a bit of experience in serial numbers as used by the US military, I'd guess that, first, somebody decided that they needed to have five digits. Then, the first, or maybe the first two, numbers would stand for something like model number or production run. Something might indicate year of production. The rest of the number might be entirely random. |

Subject: RE: BS: OOOPS-we lost a nuclear weapon. From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Nov 08 - 12:21 PM It said on the BBC radio news, that the US said all bombs [4 I think] had been recovered. That I assume is why it is news here. XG |
Subject: RE: BS: OOOPS-we lost a nuclear weapon. From: SINSULL Date: 11 Nov 08 - 12:26 PM No. According to BBC news, three were recovered and the fourth is still missing. |
