Subject: Lyr Req: Nightingale's Mardi Gras Song
From: GUEST,SunnyCyclist

I'm looking for the lyrics to the Mardi Gras Song on Nightingale's album "Three". I grew up signing the Balfa brother's Mardi Gras song, and this one has some similar lyrics, but a different structure and tune. I've done some general searches, but I can't seem to find the lyrics online and my French isn't up to transcribing them. I'm not even sure if it's Cajun or Acadian. Any hints would help me learn to sing this beautiful song.

Subject: Lyr Add: LA CHANSON DE MARDI GRAS

I think this is the same song, but I don't know whether Nightingale sings exactly these words. (I listened to the sound sample at CDBaby until I recognized a few words, then Googled with them.)

I found these lyrics in Buying the Wind: Regional Folklore in the United States by Richard M. Dorson (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1972, ©1964)

That book also has musical notation for the first 4 verses. I don't know whether there are more than 10 verses in the book, since this is a "limited preview" book and the viewable portion ends after verse 10:

LA CHANSON DE MARDI GRAS / LA DANSE DE MARDI GRAS

Sung by Bee Deshotels, accompanied by Angelus Manuel, fiddler, and Savy Augustine, triangle player, during Mardi Gras, February, 1958, at Grand Mamou, Louisiana. Collected by Harry Oster.

1. Capitaine, capitaine, voyage ton "flag."
Allons se mettre dessus le chemin.
Capitaine, capitaine, voyage ton "flag."
Allons aller chez l'autre voisin.

2. Les Mardi Gras se rassemblent une fois par an
Pour demander la charité.
Ça va-z-aller-z-en porte en porte.
Tout a l'entour du moyeu.

3. Les Mardi Gras devient de tout partout.
Oui, mon cher bon camarade,
Les Mardi Gras devient de tout partout;
Mais tout à l'entour du moyeu.

4. Les Mardi Gras devient de tout partout;
Mais principalement de Grand Mamou;
Les Mardi Gras devient de tout partout;
Mais à l'entour du moyeu.

Donnez-nous autres une 'tite poule grasse;
Mais à l'entour du moyeu.

8. Donnez-nous autres un peu de la graisse,
Si'l vous plaît, mon carami.
Mais donnez-nous autres un peu du riz;
Mais tout à l'entour, mon ami.

9. Les Mardi Gras vous remercient bien
Pour votre bonne volonté.
Les Mardi Gras vous remercient bien
Pour votre bonne volonté.

10. On vous invite tous pour le bal à ce soir;
Mais là-bas à Grand Mamou.
On vous invite tous pour le gros bal;
Mais tout à l'entour du moyeu.
