Subject: Lyr Add: SONG OF THE 32 COUNTIES (McNulty Family) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Jul 13 - 02:21 AM My transcription from the video at YouTube. I have boldfaced the words that are different from the previous version: SONG OF THE 32 COUNTIES As recorded by the McNulty Family, 27 May 1937, Decca (American) 12107A. 1. Now, here's to Donegal, And to people brave and tall, To Antrim, to Leitrim, and to Derry, To Cavan and to Louth, And to Carlow in the South. Here's to Longford, to Waterford, and Kerry! CHORUS: So clink your glasses, clink. Here's a toast we all should drink. Let everybody join in the chorus. Old Ireland is our home, And no matter where we roam, We'll be true to the dear land that bore us. 2. And here's to Tyrone, Where O'Neill ...(?) held his own, To Monaghan, Fermanagh, and Kildare, boys, And here's to the stroke Sure that broke the Saxon's yoke. You know it was the brave County Clare, boys. 3. To Sligo, and to Down, And Armagh of old renown, And here's to Kilkenny, famed in story, To Wexford, on whose name Shines the crown of deathless fame, And here's to Royal Meath in all her glory! 4. Here's to Galway and Mayo, Sure that never feared a foe, To Wicklow, its peaks and its passes, To Limerick, famed of all For its well-defended wall, And yet for the bravery of its lasses! 5. And here's to gallant Cork, The next county to New York, And here's to Roscommon light and airy, And here's to Westmeath, Where the tyrant scarce would breathe, And here is to unconquered Tipperary! 6. Now Offaly we will toast, And in Laois they all can boast Of a spot the invaders got some trouble in, So now to finish up, Fill all your glasses up, And we'll drink a jolly toast to little Dublin! |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE COUNTIES OF IRELAND / 32 COUNTIES From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Jul 13 - 07:31 PM Here's how the song appears in The Popular Poets and Poetry of Ireland by Richard Nagle (Boston: Richard Nagle, 1887), page 673: THE COUNTIES OF IRELAND. 1. Here's to Donegal And her people brave and tall. Here's to Antrim, to Leitrim, and Derry. Here's to Cavan and to Louth. Here's to Carlow in the South. Here's to Longford, to Waterford, and Kerry! CHORUS: Then clink glasses, clink. 'Tis a toast for all to drink, And let every voice come in at the chorus; For Ireland is our home, And wherever we may roam, We'll be true to the dear land that bore us. 2. Here's to Tyrone, Where O'Neill long held his own. Here's to Monaghan, Fermanagh, and Kildare, boys. Here's to her whose stroke Broke the hateful penal yoke, And you know that's the brave County Clare, boys. 3. Here's to Sligo, and to Down, To Armagh of old renown. Here's to Kilkenny, famed in story. Here's to Wexford, o'er whose name Shines a crown of deathless fame, And here's to Royal Meath and her glory! 4. Here's to Galway and Mayo, That never feared a foe. Here's to Wicklow, its peaks and its passes. Here's to Limerick, famed o'er all For its well-defended wall, And still more for the beauty of its lasses! 5. Here's to gallant Cork, The next county to New York. Here's to Roscommon bright and airy. Here's to Westmeath, Where a tyrant scarce can breathe; And here's to unconquered Tipperary! 6. Queen's County, too, we'll toast, And the King's, for both can boast They are spots the invader got some trouble in; And now to finish up, Fill a bright and brimming cup, And we'll drink, boys, to jolly little Dublin! [Queen's County – former name of County Laois] [King's County = former name of County Offaly] [This song is quoted, or perhaps alluded to, in James Joyce's Ulysses, and several books of annotations to Ulysses have identified the song as "The Thirty-Two Counties" by Timothy Daniel Sullivan (1827-1914). One of them says the words are in Walton's Treasury of Irish Songs and Ballads, page 91.] |

Subject: ADD: Ireland's Thirty-Two From: Big Tim Date: 23 Dec 03 - 09:42 AM Here's another song called "Ireland's 32" Here's to Donegal, to her brave sons one and all, Here's to Antrim, to Leitrim and to Derry, Here's to Cavan and to Louth and to Carlow in the south, Here's to Longford, to Waterford and Kerry. Chorus Then drink your glasses clean, Here's a toast to all the green, And let everybody join in the chorus, For Ireland is our home and no matter where we roam, We'll be true to the dear land that bore us Then here's to Tyrone, where O'Neill upheld? his own, Here's to Monaghan, Fermanagh and Kildare boys, And here's to those who broke the hateful penal yoke, And you know it was the brave County Clare boys. Here's to Sligo and to Down, to Armagh of great renown, And here's to Kilkenny, famed in story, Here's to Wexford boys for she, nearly set old Ireland free, And here's to royal Meath and her glory. Here's to Galway and Mayo, they never feared the foe, Here's to Wicklow, its peaks and its passes, Here's to Limerick fair to all, and her well defended walls, And still more for the beauty of her glasses? And here's to rebel Cork, the next County to New York, And here's to Roscommon, bright and airy, Here's to Westmeath, where a tyrant n'er did breathe, Here's to Offaly, to Laois and old Tipperary. (I rewrote the final line to fit in Offaly and Laois, which as far as I could make out from a poor quality recording hadn't been accounted for. I pronounce Laois as "leesh", maybe someone can refine this). |
