This thread was when I still used Win 3.1 and Netscape and had never seen Opera! Now, in Opera9 ALL those HTML things work.

Progress.... now I have a way to shout on Nov. 5th...one way or the other.

hmmm...well, I am only up to Netscape 4.08, since I don't have Win9x..(can't use the Netscape 4.5X yet)...I sure would be disappointed if they were doing stuff like that...but if AOL is running things..*sigh*. I really like Netscape 4.08...easy to use and lets ME decide what I want!

Katlaughing, my window came up as blank too but if you click (select all) which is under (edit) in your tool bar what appears is all of the posts in html form. Then you can choose which you would like to (copy) and (paste) from what is displayed and that's all there is to it.

I was a pretty faithful Netscape user, but the last version I downloaded did some obnoxious stuff to my system, like constantly rewriting things to make itself the default browser, e-mail program, and other stuff. It was a real pain to get it off the computer, but I managed. Everybody's playing the game, not just Microsoft. (although they've traditionally been more successful at it.) The marquee thing doesn't work with Netscape, and the blink thing doesn't seem to work with MSIE. If computer geeks were folkies, they would have figured out how to swipe and assimilate these things a long time ago...

Well, Bill, it's kinda six on one and half-dozen on the other, now that Netscape is owned by AOL. MSIE may be the only one that can read the <marquee> command, but Netscape is the only one that can read the <blink> command. Both browsers are actually quite good, especially if you compare them to browsers from a few years ago.

well, it ain't easy to take IE out, but you sure can put Netscape IN and never use IE except in emergencies...(Netscape even makes their browser stand-alone if you wish..which means no email, news, or 'push technology' built in..which saves maybe 17,000,000 bytes of space) I use Netscape 4, Eudora light for mail, and Agent for newsgroups..(one version is free and is called FreeAgent)

[yep, I know...a body at rest tend to remain at rest..*grin*..I am just cheap & curmudgeonly enough to fight the system up to a point)

I was able to copy and post, but only because Joe had it written out for us. When I went to viwe source, my notepad came up blank. I've not had that problem before, when viewing course on the Internet. Sorry....I do use IE....it was part of the monopolised package:-)

Copyright cannot subsist in just names. Exxon spent a fortune working out a word which had no hidden meanings in any language, and was not too hard to pronounce in any language, and they tried to argue in the English courts that it was copyright They lost.

My online HTML reference (German only) states that marquee is M$-Internet Explorer-specific and not supported by Netscape.

Sorry. I suspect some of the HTML works on some browsers, and some works on others. There seems to be some sort of one-upmanship going on with who's browsers do what. (Microsoft vs. Netscape)

I see that some people have problems with this <marquee> command - do all of you problem people have Netscape? I would think Netscape 4.5 should handle everything that can be handled by Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.

Ah, Gotcha, Reggie - I posted a sample version of my banner, using special codes so that the banner would display, but not work. To steal my sample, you don't go to "view source" - you just copy and paste it, and make the changes you want. I'll try it from yours, and we'll see if it works.

The moving sign uses the <marquee> command, Margarita. If you find an HTML trick you want to imitate, right-click on the page you like and choose "view source." Then steal whatever you like from the information that appears on your screen. You can cut-and-pase the major stuff, and insert your own changes. Instead of the number codes for colors, you can use the words posted in the chart Bill linked to. The code for my banner message is below.

A version of IE4, I think - but the first time I saw your message, on the same machine, I could read it. (Doubt because the service provider has renamed it IFL (Internet for Learning) Explorer - it should accept active content, Java and Active X, though).

Andreas, thanks for that posting: I couldn't get into that other site, nanny wouldn't let me (Why, for Heaven's sake? What is there dubious about HTML?) I had a bit of an idea about what the six digits were up to, but not an inkling of how they did it.

What bothers me now is why Joe Offer's first rolling marquee in a box is now illegible, but my cursor goes on the blink when it is over it. Same with Margarita's.

After researching, many years ago, info from the US office of Trademarks, or some such offical sounding entity, we interpreted that it was okay to put TM beside a slogan we used for my brother's music. So far, nobody has come after us nor prosecuted us!

One of them (and I think it's "TM", but I'd check if I were advising a paying client) imports reference both to registered and unregistered trade marks. So if in your jurisdiction your name has acquired the necessary trade meaning under tha law of that jurisdiction, TM should be OK. The R symbol implies registration, I think. And its not a case of suing, it's a case of being prosecuted (if anyone bothers)!

Thanks, Richard. I was going to ask about the difference between TM and ® - sounds like there isn't a whole lot of difference. The two music acts I've seen with trademark symbols after their names are Billy Joel and Chicago. It really surprised me that Chicago could claim a trademark, and I think it's kind of tacky for anyone to trademark a name of a person. Well, I think my name is every bit as distinctive and interesting as those, so I remain

While we are on the subject, in most countries it is an offence (not merely offensive) to represent that matter is a registered trade mark if such representation is not true. Depending on the jurisdiction, this may apply to use of the "R in a circle" and/or "TM" logos.

Secondly, it is true that you do "trade mark" matter, for it is a precondition to the acquisition of a registered trade mark that the mark has been applied for. But it is generally not true that you have "copyrighted" matter, for in most jurisdictions copyright arises by operation of law from the creation of a work which is the fit subject for copyright, and registration is not a precondition to the existence of the the right. This is even true in the USA these days (now that the USA is catching up with more civilised copyright jurisdictions (BG)!

Thirdly, US trade mark law is very different from UK trade mark law (as Elvis Presley Enterprises expensively found out).

Another lesson in case anyone's wondering why we bother to use hexadecimal at all:

Although hexadecimal is a numbering system in its own right, it can be used very conveniently as a shorthand method of writing binary numbers which is the only system that your CPU knows. Each hex digit translates directly to 4 bi(nary digi)ts or bits.

Hex bin
0 0000
1 0001
.
.
.
E 1110
F 1111

so 9AF5 = 1001 1010 1111 0101
and B4EC = 1011 0100 1110 1100

Just thought you needed to know.........

about the color codes (the numeric ones):
they contain three numbers of two hexadecimal (see below)digits each. The first is the red, the second the green, the third the blue part of the color (also called an RGB value).
The higher the number for a color part, the brighter is the color.
000000 means none of the colors is present, resulting in black.
ffffff means all colors in full brightness = white.
ff0000 is a bright red,
008000 is a dark green,
0000c0 is a medium blue,
ffff00 is bright yellow,
ff8000 is orange
and so on, you just mix red, blue and green (results may vary slightly from screen to screen).


Now for hexadecimal digits:
It is a number system with a base of sixteen instead of the usual 10.
Its digits are presented as
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, a, b ,c, d, e, f
It does not matter whether you use abcdef or ABCDEF
a stands for a value of 10,
b stands for a value of 11,
... f stands for a value of 15.

So if you have a hex (short for hexadecimal) number of a4e, you can translate it into the decimal system like this:
Step 1: take the value of the first digit
Step 2: if no digit is following, you are finished
Step 3: multiply your result by 16
Step 4: add the value of the digit.
Step 5: go to Step 2

With the example of a4e:
Step 1 results in 10 (value of a is 10).
Step 2: not valid, there are 2 more digits (4e)
Step 3 results in 160.
Step 4 results in 164 (value of 4 is 4).
Step 5 leads to step 2.
Step 2: not valid, another digit (e).
Step 3 results in 2624
Step 4 results in 2638 (value of e is 14).
Step 5 leads to step 2.
Step 2 valid, no more digits, we are finished: hex a4e = decimal 2638.
Now here is one for you to exercise: abc1

Nope, Alison, you're safe. Unsing embedded photos and sounds from other sites slowed things down because browsers have to get the information from all the sites involved - a thread with thirty pictures could have to download from as many as 30 sites, plus Mudcat. HTML comes straight through, direct from the 'Cat to you. the excessive use of HTML in threads does tend to make the threads hard to read - but in goofoff threads like this one, who cares?

The moving sign uses the <marquee> command, Margarita. If you find an HTML trick you want to imitate, right-click on the page you like and choose "view source." Then steal whatever you like from the information that appears on your screen. You can cut-and-pase the major stuff, and insert your own changes. Instead of the number codes for colors, you can use the words posted in the chart Bill linked to. The code for my banner message is below.
