If Andy Stewart would have been still alive, he would have turned 75 years today. He is missed, but his music will always live.

Two of my favorite songs of his (among many) are:

The Queen of Argyle and The Ramblin' Rover.

...I don't think I realised until now how close he was to my father's age (Who would have been 81, this year)

Capri Uni, I think you're confusing Andy Stewart and Andy M. Stewart. Andy M. Stewart is still alive and kicking as far as I know.

There used to be a very good Hammond organ player, Bobby Pagan, who was adamant that "a Scottish Soldier" had been nicked by Andy Stewart from a friend of his. So, who did write Scottish Soldier? And is there any substance to Bobby Pagan's allegations?

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but the lyrics to The Scottish Soldier were written by Iain MacFadyen and Andy Stewart while the melody is trad: The Green Hills of Tyrol or if you like nicked from Rossini's William Tell. (published by Kerr's Music in 1963)

I never realised he was so young.
I grew up with records of Andy Stewart on a dansette type record player at my Grandad Gilday's. Grandad was a fan and used to sing the songs as well as the Al Jolson and stuff such as Pennies From Heaven around Working Men's Clubs.
I had assumed Andy Stewart was older than my parents.
Quack!
