Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: GUEST,Alan Date: 03 Jan 09 - 07:08 PM I am English, so sorry I am on the wrong side of the pond to answer that question. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Jan 09 - 08:30 PM The French feel the same way about that, Alan, only it's the Channel in their case. ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Gurney Date: 04 Jan 09 - 07:21 PM Don't know about terminal, but I've been in pubs where it could be painful. A more violent society would reward smugness better than ours. Especially a more lawless and violent one. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Sorcha Date: 04 Jan 09 - 07:58 PM I am, Lox, thanks...but at least I don't do juvenile bathroom humour. Shesh, it does get old. And not very funny either. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Don Firth Date: 04 Jan 09 - 08:00 PM Is smugness a terminal disease? Well . . . it probably depends on what you feel smug about. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Jan 09 - 08:12 PM And in front of whom you demonstrate it... |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Donuel Date: 04 Jan 09 - 08:27 PM Smugness could be called the sin of pride. I'd call it a sure fire buzz kill. It is amazing how stunningly arrogant we can be, while knowing so very cosmicly little about ourselves and the universe. This is in part why I am amazed when I learn about a discovery no matter how great or small. In the political mirror: Republicans are trained in smugness, nobless oblige and the invisible hand (being their own greedy grasp). I am still surprised that Rush Limbaugh appeals not only to the unwashed public but certain high middle class people as well. Democrats are often smug about history proving them right but as the perpetual victims of corporatism, they will never gain the supreme snobbishness of the super rich. The Germans have a word for the worst form of smugness it sounds like "shotzenfreuda" - taking pleasure/joy from another's misfortune. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 04 Jan 09 - 09:00 PM who has seen the smug neither nor or I for when Jeremy Clarkson comes on telly I switch over to Sky. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Gurney Date: 04 Jan 09 - 11:02 PM WLD, Jeremy is a sort of prat and very non-PC, but I would point out that, where available, 'Top Gear' and 'House' are two of the most popular programmes on the box. Telling, that. They must be doing something right. |

Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: Megan L Date: 05 Jan 09 - 10:25 AM Jings an a thocht hielanders could haud a grudge. |
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease? From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Jan 09 - 11:16 AM Without reference to any particular post here-- ain't read 'em-- for some people, SEEING smugness (being defensive) is the terminal disease/ default setting. "Oh no that doesn't apply to me!" would be a symptom. :~) ~S~ |
