Subject: Morris: A Life With Bells On
From: Dick The Box
Date: 18 Jan 09 - 03:21 PM

Following the recent discussions about the imminent demise of Morris, the release of this film is timely! It seems to be genuine but then again it might be just a sophisticated hoax? Anyone got any more info?

Wow !! I thoroughly enjoyed that ! Factual,no-holds-barred documentary making at its very best.Stunning realism, and a pleasingly down-to-earth approach to the sometimes seemingly insuperable problems attendant upon an understanding of what really drives men to participate in this ridiculous and depraved activity.I thought the item at the end, about shagging a pig,was most poignant.Whoever made this ground-breaking film-----I salute you!!

Dick - when you create a blue clicky you need to add the http:// bit in front of the new URL, otherwise the blickifier adds your URL to Mudcat's URL cos it thinks it's a page on it's own site (or something like that!)

I'm looking froward to seeing the movie - I spent time with my local Morris side at a festival this weekend (as I always do!) & managed to get a pic of them down on their knees in the dance they hadn't done for a while until they got an infusion of young (teenage) dancers! Someone here recently told me the name of this dance, but naturally I forgot. As the Squire said when introducing it to the watching hordes, it's the only dance they do that can hurt then, unlike those violent looking stick dances.

From the film trailer it looks like a very healthy perspective, showing the passion of those involved in Morris, the extreme lengths that "purists" will sometimes go to versus the youngsters' wish to innovate, and the position that Morris enjoys (if that is the word) in the national conscience (the butt of jokes and yet... "Morris is English", shouts Derek Jacobi when he sees a Californian dance troupe taking Morris to the stage). I can't wait to see the film!

As the hero says: "I breathe it, I live for it, I'd even die for it. In fact I know many that died doing it...!"

It took a while but I got to watch the trailer - looks wonderful fun! It looks like it will be an affectionately humorous look at morris: and the traditionalists!

Would it be appropriate here, given Derek Jacobi's character's remark, to mention that I actually first did Morris in South Africa...?

I wonder if it will be available on DVD anywhere?

I will confess that Keith and I bought the Mail on Sunday yesterday, the day the article appeared. Keith is a big fan of John Lennon, and there was a free CD of his - in the end it turned out to be a happy coincidence.

If you haven't read the article yet (See Diane's message above with the blue clicky thing), it's well worth a read. Also, go to the film's website and sign up for the newsletter - the more of us that do that, the better the chance we have of seeing it.

Next question - is there an Oscar for dance tutors? Laurel, if there were, I'd vote for you.

Cheers

Sylvia

I've been having a chat with the film's director this morning. We're hoping we can do a screening, and with any luck some sort of pre-show event (like a Q&A) at Sidmouth. But in the first instance, they need a bit of grass-roots support, trying to help the film to get major distribution. It can only become the morris answer to Calendar Girls if people get to see it! Apparently the distributors thought the film's subject was "too niche" for major distribution, but I'm sure the combined weight of the morris and folk fraternities may disabuse them of this notion...

Ring your local cinema and tell them you'd like to see the film.

I can't see the entire video as it keeps breaking up and then freezing.

I am wondering about the Morris Team in California, described in the plot summary. A few years ago at the Rochester Sweeps there was (I think) a self described extreme Morris from California. Black leather studded jackets with the sleeves cut out and black leather basques on the ladies, etc. They looked like the love children of Hells Angels and Morris Dancers.

Some had pierced their upper arms and hung bells (big bells) from the wire or monfiliament in the piercings. It was quite gruesome in a cool way or the reverse. Those piercings were breaking open and bleeding as they danced. No wonder when you jump around with freaking sleighbells dangling from your skin. I would say they must have had balls the size of churchbells but some of them were women.

Maybe they have been banned from returning to Uk for causing a public health risk.

Biohazard Morris. Now that is extreme.

Another "not quite niche" film was "The Titfield Thunderbolt".
This was, of course, one of the Ealing Comedy set and thus seen as a mainstream film, but I believe that it must have been partly responsible for the public's later reaction to Beeching and British Railways's obliteration of steam from the railway system.
It was obviously a comedy but was not poking fun at the preservation movement because the film largely pre-dated it. It did make railways seem fun and accesible.

Would there be so many preserved railways and steam locos today if this film was not there in the national sub-conscious?

The same sort of effect could apply if we can get this film in general circulation.

Is it possible that all the silly nonsense that the bloke from the Morris Circle (sorry . . . I just got this in answer to an email I sent:

Thank you for your interest in Morris. We would love to show the film right across the globe and especially in the US (I know there are more Morris teams in the States than in the UK).

Film distribution is a weird thing and not down to the film makers. Films get put in cinemas by distribution companies (Icon, Revolver, Lionsgate, etc). When those companies saw Morris, they loved it, but were worried there was no audience for it. We want to show them that there is. So, we need people like you to lobby their local cinemas en masse, or even the distribution companies themselves to show the film. If enough people make a noise to them about Morris, we can roll it out globally and everyone can get to see it.

Let's make them realise that people want to see this film.

All best wishes

I've created a petition to gather names together of people supporting the morris film. The idea is that if we get loads of names we can hand them over to the film makers which will hopefully give them a bit of leverage with the distributors about getting the film shown more widely.

Don't know if it will work but worth a try!

Please forward to all your contacts!!

In the meantime Oxfolk ceilidhs are pursuing a showing in Oxfordshire via Moviola http://www.moviola.org/ who are showing the film in the SW.

Although I've signed, I wonder if these petitions can be counter-preductive. It's only a few hours old of course, but at the moment there's 23 signatures. Suppose it gets to 1000. Spread over 50-odd regions in the UK and two countries, that would not convince me that it was economically justified as no one county would get anywhere near filling even a small screening room for a single night. Having no petition at all, I'd have to guess and I might decide it was. So in some ways having no petition could make the chance of seeing it released better than having a petition signed by not-very-many.

I emailed from the film website asking about DVD release as there's not a cinema anywhere near me showing it. I received this response:

Dear Ian

We can't show the film on DVD until it has had proper distribution, I'm afraid. However, we would love to show the film near to you. We'd love to show it all over the country, but it isn't up to us. We'd like to get it into mainstream cinemas so that everyone can see it. For that, we need the distributors who passed on it before Christmas to realise they made a mistake.

You probably know this, but distributors are the people who flash up in the credits before the film - Icon, Lionsgate, Revolver, etc. They all saw the film, loved it, but were worried there was no audience for it. They would think again if they could see my inbox which is groaning with requests from all over the world...

We made the film for people just like you. People who are generally ignored by the media. We need you to make noise en masse to cinemas and distributors and let them know there is an audience for the film. That way, we can roll it our across the country, even the world. The incredible Cat Moore has started an e-petition you may want to sign

http://petition.co.uk/we_want_the_morris_movie

In any event, thank you for the passion shown for our film, your film.

I received the following response from Phillip Walkley of Moviola (who are showing it in the West Country) today.

"Dear Terry
Following my colleagues response to you a few days ago, have forwarded your email to the film's makers in London to see if they have any Kent plans. Also we do programme films for Screen on Sheppey (at Sheerness Leisure Centre) Maybe you could contact them and see if they have plans to book the film through us?
Kevin O Reilly Sheppey HLC Sheppey Leisure, Off Broadway Sheerness ME12 1HH 01795 583547 kevin@sheppeyhlc.org.uk "

Whilst this is possibly the start of better news, Sheerness (and with due respect to anyone on the Isle of Sheppey) is not exactly the centre of Morris activity in Kent. If however someone on the Island feels they can whip up enough local support for the film to be shown there I would encourage them to make contact direct with the Leisure Centre.

Terry

I added my details to the petition.

I created flyer including details and web addresses for the film, this thread, the film distributers and the petition.

I dropped some flyers off at session in Kent yesterday afternoon.

I have emailed my folk club organiser in Essex and sent him the flyer.

I have gotten the phone number for the Rochester Sweeps organiser from Medway Council.

My boss at Essex Heritage and Arts, has put me onto Screen East. She says this is exactly the kind of stuff they like to support.

I don't even do Morris Dance. How bizarre is that?

Make Morris Happen!

I'm the Treasurer at Fordingbridge Entertainments Society where we showed the film yesterday (30th Jan) in association with Moviola (moviola.org) and we had a capacity audience of 150 and even had to turn people away from the door. The last time this happened was for Mamma Mia. In the four years we have been showing films we have never had such a happy and delighted audience and we were also given an short, impromptu performance by the Bourne River Morris (thanks guys - you were a real hit) before the event. After the film Lucy Ackhurst (Director) and Charles Oldham (Derecq Twist) made a surprise appearance and the audience applauded them for so long I thought they would never stop. A BBC film crew turned up shoot film for a two minute slot sometime between 6-9am on the BBC1 Breakfast show on Tuesday 3rd February. We also had Southern Radio recording loads of interviews before and after the film. I really hope this film goes to the national cinema chains because it really deserves it. Good luck to you Lucy and the rest of you.

Peter

It was a very enjoyable film, enjoyed enormously by the public despite its apparent "niche" content.
I will be looking to see it again, I think it has more to give. The humour wasn't "in your face" but there was lots of it.

It's unfortunate that the BBC piece refers to it as a "little" film and a bit of a curiousity, without mentioning the stars and all the familiar faces in the cast - the sort of thing which might make the mainstream public curious enough to want to see it.

Derek Jacobi is the most famous name, but there are famiiliar faces from a whole host of solid British films and TV: Greg Wise, Ian Hart, Naomie Harris, Sophie Thompson, Richard Lumsden, Harriet Walter - the names may not be that familiar, but when you see the film you realise they've been in loads of stuff - most of them in top-quality British costume drama (though Naomie Harris most famously starred in Pirates of the Caribbean and 28 Days Later).

It's a cracking cast, no doubt selected for its mainstream British film industry appeal - it will be a shame if the mainstream audience doesn't get to see it!

CBC's "As it Happens" had an interview with the film maker, Chas Oldham. He seems to think there are more Morris sides in the US than in the UK.

They say that the movie has become a "cult hit" in small villages in England. I'll be looking out for it here. It would be great if this stirs up more enthusiasm. The most recent local side in Cleveland "Rigor Morris" (logo of a dancing skeleton) is several years moribund, unfortunately. It would be great to see this at the Cleveland International Film Festival and better still if this inspires more participation.

There might be hope yet. We were negotiating with Moviola, who are the people who are putting it out in the West Country, to put the film on, but they only had the rights up to Easter, and we wanted a date after that.

Just heard from them, and they say that the film company has an embargo on any future shows until they hear about a main national distributor. Which personally is a bit of a pain, but it sounds to me as though they think they might be able to get it out there big time.

A sad link there, but hopefully it will again show that we are out here, doing what we love and that there is great respect - it would be nice to think that Andy could play a little part in getting this out to a wider audience.

I gave the link information to the lady who organizes a local thing called "Monday Night at the Movies" last night. Her ears pricked up when I mentioned the CBC interview on "As IT Happens" last Friday.
They show smaller types of movies which don't make major distribution(in the local LARGE Galaxy chain cinema). They do however still need some sort of Canadian distributor she said.
They pick up a lot of movies from the "Toronto Film Festival" so if you can get it in there, I have already offered our side to dance before each showing. There are other sides who would do the same in Toronto too, also London, Cambridge and Hamilton all Ont. Canada.
Good Luck JohnB.

Thanks for the heads up on Lucy appearing on the Alan Titchmarsh show today, Ralphie. Just watched it.

The show opened with Morris dancing.

Lucy was joined by and Charles Thomas Oldham (Dereq Twist in the film) on the show, and what a plug for the film. Alan said that his jaws ached after watching the film and that it doesn't make fun of Morris dancing, but praises it (not his exact words, but that's the gist).

They have had about 110,000 hits on the website per week, which is apparently what a big hollywood movie would expect to get. Hopefully, those of us in the rest of the UK and the world will now get to see the film, not just you lucky ones in the South East.

Now's the time to sign the petition, if you haven't already done so.

I don't know if we'll be able to view the show on a play it again facility - anyone know?

This is really getting exciting, isn't it!

Cheers and keep dancing

Sadly don't think there is an I-Player facility for ITV. But it was a pretty good plug. As Sylvia says. now is the time to point your mates in the direction of Cat Moores petition.
Slum Morris Millionaire anyone? (After all they couldn't get a distributor either and got 7 Baftas last weekend!)

Typical - the programme is NOT on the list of programmes from today that are available on the ITV Player, SO!!!.....

.....I've just sent emails to the department that is responsible for the web site and to the department that is responsible for programmes.

If enough of us do this, then this too could be made available so that we can all see it.

The content of the email is listed here - feel free to use or ammend as is necessary if you wish.

COME ON FOLKS!!!!!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - why isn't the alan Titchmarsh Show for Thursday
12th February, Re the Film Morris: A life With Bells On, available on the
ITV Player. You might be aware that there are serious moves to get this
film NATIONALLY distributed. Whilst it was FANTASTIC that you covered the
film in the programme, it would be even more helpful to our cause, if we
could access at any time over the next month, so that we can publicise it
to Morris Dancers who missed it, and more importantly, to our friends and

However, I've now taken the opportunity to send a a copy of Kev's email with a supporting comment on to the viewerservices section of ITV .. who knows maybe we can bump it up from that direction as well ?? Nothing less than baseball bats will suffice for people like that. Their idea of a really good film is probably "Sex Lives of the Potato Men" (yes folks, it got a national showing).

I've just about given up on Odeous and Vue now. What with popcorn all over the floor, mobiles constantly going off, out of focus prints, etc etc...may they go bankrupt. Harrumph harrumph, to quote Mel Brooks.

Well, I've heard back from my friend who has now seen the film, and reports disappointment ... they said that the film was rather slow moving, found it strange that the morris side in the film had no musicians, there was no "real" morris dancing in the film, and that the trailer basically contained all the good bits. Discussing it today I was told that the Californian morris dancers were the best thing about the whole film. I wait with interest to see it, and make my own mind up.

I have a non-morris, normal member of public friend who saw it in Somerset last week. She absolutely loved it, and actually mentioned that the pace it unfolded suited the subject (slow in S.W. England, fast in California). Well, she knows more about film than morris. She described it as a very gentle, affectionate, odd little comedy, very English, obviously done with real love for the subject. Her words were "when it comes out on DVD I shall buy it for all my friends." I don't imagine she would have known the difference between "real" morris dancing and what might be in the film, and she didn't mention being surprised that they were dancing with no music though that does seem odd, I'll ask her about that as I'd read somewhere that people like Saul Rose and John Dipper did music for the film. Anyway there you are - that's what a member of the public made of it with no axes to grind. Good news by the sound of it.

I have seen it, and enjoyed it.

If you are looking for "real" Morris, apart from a few clips at Wimborne Folk Fest, there isn't any.
If you are looking for slapstick, car chases, wild sex, fast action, gratuitous violence, well I wouldn't bother if I were you.

But, as Folknacious says above, it is a gentle, entertaining, funny, English comedy that takes a poke at humanity via the Morris. It isn't really about Morris, although dancers will get a few more chuckles out of it than perhaps the wider public, and folk from south-west England likewise.

The mostly-non Morris audience at Fordingbridge gave the film/producer/lead actor an enormous and unexpected ovation. I guess that meant they liked it.

I am thinking of going to watch it again, probably at Downton, 'cos I'm sure I missed stuff on the first viewing and I spent far too much time at the end looking for familiar sides and faces.

Jude,

"One minor thing, what's this about morriss being English ? Has Derek Jacobi never heard of Welsh border morriss"

From the English side of teh border border with Wales? :-)

Although, in context, he was talking about something resembling Cotswold Morris. And, unless they've moved them in the last few weeks, the Cotswolds have been in England for a fair old time now...

Saw "Morris: A Life With Bells On" last week and afraid I have to report disappointment too. A very thin storyline, very slow and obviously filmed on a very low budget - they couldn't even aford the seventh actor to play the part of a musician.

Saw it in a Dorset village hall and by far the biggest laugh (and there aren't enough of these) was for "Dorcester International Airport".

Just heard about a movie of this title which has been screened in a few places, but is having difficulty finding a distributor. Surely not? The movie-going 15 to 25 age group must surely be ready for this. Frantic music, gaudy costumes, cross dressing & the underlying hint of violence from those wooden sticks! Seriously though. has anyone seen it?

I left a comment on the Marketplace item (link left by NOMAD). My comment directs readers, here and the Facebook group and petitions.

HERE'S AN IDEA!

google - "Morris A Life with bells on". Go to every link it yields and if there is an option to leave comments do so. In your comment, leave links to this thread and other sites where comments can be collected. Such as Facebook and the petitions (there is more than one going).

Can you set up a Morris movie interest thingamie on your Myspace? If so, do so and invite comments. This will generate more hits when the film is googled. Currently the title in quotes only gets 3,690 hits.

If we build up the google hits to a respectable number, it may make distributors think again about this film.

With the help of the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF)Morris: A Life With Bells On will be making its first (and hopefully not only, but we don't know yet) appearance in the U.S. on Saturday May 23 at 11:00 AM and Sunday May 24th at 7:00 PM. A strong showing here will help it get a U.S. distributor, which it needs in order to be shown in other cities.

We are asking those close or wish to travel to consider coming to Seattle for Memorial Day weekend. Bring your kit! Dance at the premiere! We are planning a mass dance-out on Saturday after the screening at 12:30 or so. WE WANT TO GET AS MANY DANCERS IN KIT AS POSSIBLE FOR THE PRESS AND TO HYPE THE FILM. The film will be screened in the same venue as the NW Folklife Festival www.nwfolklife.org which conveniently also happens Memorial Day weekend. We are hoping to make its U.S. opening a media-covered event and your participation will make that possible.

BREAKING NEWS: Chaz Oldham will be in attendance to whip up support for the film. He is the producer/writer and star of the film.

Look what's on the Press Association news wires today:

The star of a new film about Morris dancing said tonight that he hoped it would help the "quintessentially English" pastime flourish.

Sir Derek Jacobi insisted that the tradition would never die out as colourfully-dressed Morris men danced for crowds at the premiere of Morris: A Life With Bells On in London's Leicester Square.

Actors including Emma Thompson, husband Greg Wise, Sir Derek and Harriet Walter attended the premiere of the comedy faux-documentary which follows the fortunes of Millsham Morris, one of the leading sides in the country.

Sir Derek, who plays traditionalist Quentin Neely, said the film was made with "no budget, no money, but a lot of heart, love and passion".

He said he hoped it would help Morris dancing flourish, adding: "It will survive whatever anybody says. It's a wonderfully eccentric part of English tradition. It's quintessentially English."

Charles Thomas Oldham wrote and produced the film and starred as its leading character, Derecq Twist.

He said: "I was immersed in Morris dancing from a young age. It's in my DNA."

Oldham's wife, Lucy Akhurst, who directed the film and appeared in it as a physiotherapist, said she hoped it would be picked up in the United States.

She added: "We'd love to take it to the States and introduce the world to the Morris."

It was featured on GMTV this morning, though there was the inevitable undertone of giggles from the presenters.

It turned out one of the cameramen was a Morris man, so I hope he had words with them after the show.

Nevertheless, this is a case of all publicity is good publicity as I think some of it was the embarrassment of the English at something they see as somewhat cranky and are not confident enough to say "its ours and no one else's"

Enjoyed the film (in Cambridge) and the TV programme, but one criticism. The lack of musicians playing for the dancing was noticeable. The writer and producer who were there for a Q&A session, said it was due to lack of budget to pay the musicians. I wonder how much (or how little) they would have done it for?

They said the soundtrack is released tomorrow.

Pretty good film. One thing that struck me was the quality of the acting - I thought several actors had to be major stars I'd somehow not recognized, but on looking at the credits realized they were just about all unknowns (Dominique Pinon apart). They dominated the screen with total confidence (two that really made an impression were the black girl and the batty academic with her pile of Readers Digest Condensed Books).

One small plot hole. What did anybody actually DO to change the Morris Circle's mind? There should have been something to imply in at least vague terms that somebody had done something pretty persuasive, but you didn't find out a thing.

There were some fairly well known actors in it, I thought. Derek Jacobi is the obvious one, but Harriet Walter as the batty academic, Sophie Thompson as Will's missis and Ian Hart as the Moss Side Squire.

I take you're point, though, that the leading characters were played by really good actors who aren't as well known.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely camera work - it looked beautiful.

Great afternoon! I think some of the more Morris-y jokes went over the heads of some of the Scottish audience, but there was plenty of laughter, if no dancing. I also noticed the lack of musicians. Harriet Walter (Emeritus Professor of International Folk Dance, Cambridge University, no less) played a blinder as did Derek Jacobi as the CEO of the Morris Circle in his resplendent London office overlooking the "gherkin"! As for the very camp Californian team...........!
It was just one showing in the Cameo's smallest auditorium and sold out: I expect the bigger halls were half-empty! I'd be more than happy to see it again!
There was also a recruiting drive going on to start an Edinburgh Morris team, with plenty of folk signing up either to dance or to play for the dancers. (and yes, we'll prob all do it for nowt, John J!)

They showed it in Aberdeen yesterday. Rob danced with Banchory Morris before, during, and after the film.'During' was because they were having technical problems playing the film, and the audience was entertained with more live Morris dancing while they were trying to get it going. Unfortunately, it broke down again in almost the same place, so they never got to watch the end.

I hope they can show it again, after I get there. I missed out by 13 days! Still in Oz, but not for much longer! I haven't seen the film yet, but I really want to. Rob said it was hilarious!

Screen 1 at the Regal Playhouse in Henley was full yesterday and the show was preceded by 1 hour of dancing from two sides in the cinema courtyard, liberally aided (in my case) by bottles of Henley Dark.

The film was all I expected of it and more - wouldn't have missed it for the world. I had tears of laughter in my eyes throughout most of it. The jokes were coming thick and fast and most were not "in jokes" so should be understood by a general audience(how about the Frenchman's "Cantona" dictum? Or the very name "Moss Side" with the thick Liverpudlian accent and the tattoos and rings?). I also noted Saul Rose and Paul Sartin among the muso credits - good for the lads!

Jack Campin, the Moss Side Squire did say that "words were had" with the CEO of the Morris Circle implying persuasion tactics reminiscent of the real Moss Side's gang warfare of old - and let the imagination fill in the rest!

We saw the film in York yesterday and the Morris teams dancing outside before. Really excellent film (very funny) - should be made compulsory viewing for all those who like the devils dance - Line dancing (Ha! Ha!).

It was sold out and I noticed that when I originally bought our tickets the Cinema showed only one screening for yesterday but when we came out after the screening we noticed other times shown so must have been shown twice (!!) yesterday because of demand. I know it is to be shown on 2nd October in York accoring to the Programme.

We were laughing most of the way home and wondered if they will make another film - Traditional Folk Singing - A life with ones finger in the ear.

We are all going to see it when it is screened in Hull next month.

Bath was sold-out too. I was always going to Wotton-under-Edge. A charming little cinema. Teas in the Town Hall, Morris opposite.

The film? Wow! I always rate a film on the continuity errors I spot. When bored it is all I have left for entertainment. Yesterday I didn't spot one. There may not have been any but I wouldn't bet on it, I just didn't look for them. Says it all really, a very professional film, especially for the 500,000 GBP it cost to make. And getting Derek Jacobi must have lifted their game. And the critics liked it (not that that ever made my mind up).

I don't really care what the subject is next time - I just know it will be a well made film. I hope money doesn't spoil their close observation lavished on "Morris". But they certainly will have more dosh at their disposal.

It so happens that there IS a Dorchester Airport, but it's in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Transatlantic flights from your local airstrip? Whyever not?

I thought Moss Side was Manchester, but the accent was Liverpool: prob just another of those jokes, as was the guy in the team who was on international secondment (or something like that) from Newcastle-on-Tyne!

And a friend thought there was a definite but subtle ref to Hammersmith Morris in it too.

MALWBO pulled a capacity crowd into Hexham's Forum Cinema on Sunday afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and so did everyone I spoke with afterwards. Before the show, dancing in the Market Square by several North-Eastern sides also attracted a large and enthusiastic audience, many of whom joined in a massed Circassian Circle after the final display dance.

The Forum is one of those civilised cinemas that not only has a bar, but also allows patrons to take their (plastic) glasses into the auditorium. This facility enhanced many people's enjoyment of the movie, and the few who over-indulged only added to the entertainment as they jingled to and from the loo during the performance.

Now that my euphoria has subsided a little, I suspect the film will not achieve the same level of success as other recent movies about plucky small-town Brits fighting for a good cause, like "Calendar Girls", "Brassed Off", or "The Full Monty". It lacks the high surface gloss those movies displayed, and the environment it's set in will be less comprehensible to a mass audience. But given the relative inexperience of its makers, and the miniscule budget they were working with, the film is a very remarkable achievement. I'm sure that it will earn itself a respectable niche in British movie history.

All in all, a good day for the Morris, and for the folk arts in general - now the challenge is to follow it up by getting more people interested, and involved, in them.

Wassail!

Bloody hell

The nearest screening to where I live is Greenwich London or Haverhill Suffolk, both of them an hour drive away. That just sucks.

I don't understand it. The blinking Morris Ring HQ is in Essex. Surely the film should play in Essex. What is the Squire doing? Why has he not demanded it be shown at the nearest Independent Theatre to Thaxted Essex?

What do I have to do to get this film a screening in Essex. Who do I have to yell at?

This is so not fair!

I don't know the members of Hunter's Moon Morris, but they are one of my favorites when I go to Rochester Sweeps.

I think it is because when I first saw them it was couple of years after Andie passed away and there was a young woman on the side who (even under black face) looked so much like my Andie it startled me.

Hunter's Moon put on a very energetic and noisy show.

VT- why not ask your local cinema?

Why has he not demanded...

I don't think ANYONE is in a position to demand anything. All we can do is ask- and if enough people ask, then they will think it worth their while to show it!

I have sent a couple of emails to my borough council who manages the local independent theatre.

No reply.

I was just having a bit of a rant. We will probably drive up to Suffolk for the screening in November.

Hmmm- council-run theatres... but hey, keep trying!

I have just had a reply from the Electric theatre in Birmingham, nearest place showing it. They have two weekend matinee performances planned, and I asked if they had plans for any further showings, in the evenings. Chap said it depends how well the current ones do- if they do well he can 'almost guarantee' more performances.

He said they are doing well with bookings for one showing, when a morris side are coming to dance- so looks very promising.

I'm annoyed I missed 'Morris:The Making Of' on UKTV's Blighty channel, it's so difficult to plan anything on the Sky schedule, there's so much stuff there (much of it crap) that I tend to just survey what's on currently or in the next hour, that's the only way I find I can manage it! It's just too time-consuming attempting to plan any further ahead than that!

Anyone heard if it's going to be screened again?

Have just checked with the Hull Screen box office.(01482 223113)

They had planned two showings for Fri Oct 23 at 6.20 and 8.40; have now added three on Sat 24th at 2.20, 6.20 and 8.40.

I don't know whether any local teams will be dancing on those days.

The Showroom Cinema has agreed to show it in Sheffield !! YES!!

But at the moment they are suggesting that they should show it between Xmas and New Year.

I have pointed out that may not be the best time because people could have difficulty raising teams to publicise it.

BUT they are willing to be guided on this one. A quick expression of opinion might help them decide. Contact me here please and I will pass on your thoughts.

Arrive back home last night (to Lewis, Eric)

Danced with Banchory outside the cinema on Sunday and saw the film then danced after in the bar.
Comp ticket for the film AND a free pint!! (although it was Czech lager). Top marks to the Belmont Picture House.

The film is TOTAL nonsense as far as morris is concerned but quite funny. The gay side in California were stars! Not many people in the audience so maybe the decision not to put it on general release was commercially sound.

So, doncatterall, which one were you? I was there, with Rob, who danced a couple and also played melodeon. I got most of the dances on video too.

The problem last time was that they had sent a DVD rather than a proper film, and there were problems with the DVD continually stopping, and eventually refusing to work at all. This time they had the proper one, and it was fine.

You certainly had to suspend disbelief completely, but it was a lot of fun. At least the final dance in the movie was a proper Morris dance, not the threeple whatever one that was much talked about :)

The plebs I refer to are the likes of the panelists on the "News Quiz" (think "Have I got News for You" without pictures)

On a programme a few years back they started laughing just at the word Morris, not what followed. I am not exagerating. When I e-mailed them and pondered the situation, adding - 'are they not proud to be English?', they replied "None of us are English". AFAIK they were all British (or UK citizens at least). And all of them Uni graduates.
I don't ever see them laughing at the words "Irish Dance" or Scottish etc.

Now call me dismissive but "pleb" is the politest word for people who can laugh at a single word. It is not metaphore, it is supercilious.

Let it percolate round the cult cinemas first. Then let the mainstream see what they missed. I am watching the award circus for accolades......

It is even being shown in a pub - I assume the Plough is a pub. With all the pub closures this has to be a welcome trend.

Just arrived home from seeing it at the Hawke's Bay premiere and dancing in the theatre as well.
I'm still in kit!
We loved it - laughed most of the way through (except the sad bit in the middle).
Lots of subtle humour (and not so subtle as well).
The non-folkie people in the audience seemed to think it was a serious documentary at first but our whole side was laughing so much the others soon realised it wasn't serious.
It seems to be on all round NZ from Thursday, 10th December. I asked how long it was being shown for and the answer seems to be that depends on the audience size and demand - maybe one week, maybe more.
It looks great on the big screen but now I'd like a DVD to watch it at home.

The very mellow jazz sax player, Lester Young, had his own way of talking. If he liked something very much, he would always say, "Bells baby!!!"

He also gave Billie Holiday her nickname, Lady Day.

And Harry Edison who liked candy... Sweets Edison.

I think it's 100 minutes but you should be able to find that from the web site or with a bit of Googling.

Thanks for telling us that - the Blighty Channel is also on Virgin Media (cable), number 206 - here. And they've also got an accompanying programme about the making of the film, and about Morris dancing - "Morris in the Making"

Maybe we can hope in time the film will get a showing on some channel everyone can get.

Just wondering what happened to that guy who took all our emails and phone numbers when we went to see it in Edinburgh last September, the idea being that he would re-start a Lothian Morris side, and need a few musicians too.
None of us ever heard any more about it! If you're reading this, please PM me.
Looking forward to the DVD.

yeah, finally got round to watching it on Blighty this week.

Wife loved it all and laughed every few seconds from start to finish.

I took a while to warm to the 'dramedy' until the darker slightly more serious aspects
started to balance out the weaker sub "Bellamy's People" pastiche elements.

This film is however the finest tribute to the mystical properties of extra strong rough cider
ever depicted in any art form.

This west country boy could smell it and taste it; made me very thirsty after nearly 5 months on the waggon
[excepting xmas & new year.. cheers...]
for personal health & safety reasons...

There are about half a dozen (all new ones, I think) on ebay, but I haven't checked whether they are US-compatible.

We bought the DVD but decided not to watch it until we had seen the screening here on the Isle of Wight.

I wrote a review, ( Morris with bells on....review )
for our Morris side site. If you can tear yourself away from reading about the newest side on the Island, scoll to the bottom article.

As I sort of said in the article, pin back your blinkers, engage fun and enjoy.

I have checked Amazon (Amazon US even).   It appears the version they are now selling in the US is not US-compatible.

Frustration.

Now what sense does that make?

I have sent them a comment to that effect (and I'm not the only one, but the more people who do, the more likely they might possibly address this problem.) You would think both the firm selling the product and Amazon itself would want to raise sales.

hint.. just try googling ways to enter a code number on your remote control
to safely hack your DVD player
so it becomes region free.
Or easily discover how to do likewise with your computers DVD player.
With most recent viewing equipment this is usually not such a difficult 'problem' to overcome.

Any tech savvy young kid in your family would know how to help do this
within minutes.

Netflix lists, but says it's not available yet. It gives a "Save" button, which puts it on a list to add to your queue when it becomes available. Can't hurt to click it to show interest...

Wonderful film. Was only talking about it last night and will try to watch it over the weekend. Derek Jacobi's portrayal of the neo-nazi head of the 'Morris Circle' is a masterpiece in ham acting :-)
