Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Susan-Marie Date: 25 Jun 99 - 12:22 PM I've always thought that the tunes for "Come by the Hills" and "Buachaill on Eirne" are slightly different. CBTH as sung by Loreena McKennit is different (a few notes in the second line) than BOE in "Songs and Dances of Ireland". Are they supposed to be identical? |
Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Roddy Date: 25 Jun 99 - 05:35 PM I always hold "CBTH" with a certain mount of suspicion. I first heard it in the early sixties when "Folk Music" was making a great come-back in Ireland. Unfortunately a lot of bandwagon-jumpers took advantage and all sorts of rubbish was peddled as "Folk/Traditional". What particularly narked me about this was the pinching of Gaelic song tunes, messing them about and passing them off with English words as something which they aren't. This is one in question. I have known this song since I was a child and I resent very much what has been done to it, giving rise to misconceptions such as Susan-Marie's. Let me say that the fault is not her's but it just shows how misinformnation can spread. Roddy |
Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Barry Taylor Date: 25 Jun 99 - 11:02 PM You'll find my multi-track midi here. Alas, the lyrics to my version comprise the modern iteration that Roddy referred to. |
Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Helen Date: 25 Jun 99 - 11:09 PM Roddy, Could you enlighten us about what the original was. I love this tune, and I'd much rather know what it originated as than only know it in its doctored version. BTW, this is another 'Cat coincidence (think X-Files music here) as I dialled up I looked at a list of music I am thinking about for my wedding this year and saw the title "Come By the Hills" and started singing it in my head, then the first thing I see on Mudcat is that title at the top of the list of threads. Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Susanne (skw) Date: 26 Jun 99 - 07:37 PM The tune may be Irish, but the words - or rather, Gordon Smith, is Scottish and wrote the words some time during the sixties, I believe. Also, he was a TV producer who gave many of the then emerging folk bands their first TV break. - Susanne |
Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Roddy Date: 26 Jun 99 - 09:41 PM Helen, The most commonly sung words are to be found in a collection by the Late Seán Ó Baoill called "Cnuasacht de Cheoltaí Uladh." It continues to be re-published at fairly irregular intervals and is at the moment out of print unfortunately. The title is "Buachaill ón Eirne" = " a Boy from the Erne" this reference being to either the river or lough of the same name, or what is much more reasonable, the district in which both are found. Sorry I can't be of more assistance. Roddy |
Subject: RE: 'Come by the Hills' midi? From: Roddy Date: 26 Jun 99 - 09:47 PM Sorry, folks,I should have included this comment in my last posting: the tune given by Alison is the original. The CBTH version differs in the second line and to my ears is innappropriate in style. Roddy |
