Subject: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 19 Feb 09 - 08:23 AM My wife bought this a few days ago. It took a while and considerable speculation to deduce its use, as seen in the second photo... the "thing" |

Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: VirginiaTam Date: 19 Feb 09 - 09:36 AM arrghhh! Did I just receive an email today that included in the list of cost saving ideas - one aluminum cigar tube filled with angry wasps to use as a vibrator? Shudder. I did, I did, get that email today. These things happen in 3s don't they. Wonder what the next one will be. |

Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Feb 09 - 11:51 AM Unless the item is oven-proof, it wouldn't last long as a roasting device. Moreover, the 'dish' base would be too small to collect the juices. The phallus seems to be too large in diameter for it to serve as a doughnut holder. Used by old maids to play 'chicken'? |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Bert Date: 19 Feb 09 - 11:59 AM Shouldn't this be posted in the 'So, What Makes's a Woman Happy' thread? |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 19 Feb 09 - 01:16 PM Q- We have already used it successfully and it made an excellent tender roast chicken. It is made of the same ceramic material as several of our bean-pots and soup-pots, which we have been using in the oven for years. It caught the juices perfectly. -jfw |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Feb 09 - 01:23 PM I have something similar, made of metal rather than ceramic. It works. |

Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Feb 09 - 05:08 AM "Unless the item is oven-proof, it wouldn't last long as a roasting device" Er... I know it's been a long time since I did pottery at school, but surely this ceramic object was fired in a kiln a few hundred degrees hotter than any domestic oven can get? LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 20 Feb 09 - 09:20 AM We use ceramics in the oven often. My wife is a potter. It's good to allow them to heat along with the oven, but they very rarely crack. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 20 Feb 09 - 09:30 AM Slightly off-topic, but.. If you're a slow eater, but like your food piping hot, put thick ceramic plates in the oven & serve on those. Careful of burning fingers and tabletop, use thick layers of placemats. They hold heat for a long time, and it's fun to watch the gravy keep bubbling. Yum. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Amos Date: 20 Feb 09 - 09:48 AM Reminds me of a Marilyn Monroe movie...Some like it Hot...with Tony Perkins. Filmed here in San Duiego, at the Hotel Del Mar. A |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 Feb 09 - 10:11 AM Tony Perkins was not in that film. Tony Curtis was, however. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 20 Feb 09 - 10:33 AM That's the alternate-universe version. Tony Perkins stabs Jack Lemmon and escapes in drag. |

Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 20 Feb 09 - 11:32 AM johnf, thanks for the tip about heating a pottery dish up along with the oven. It's simple, but I never thought of it. I like hand-made ceramics and have nice little collection in my kitchen. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: john f weldon Date: 20 Feb 09 - 11:43 AM Be sure to warn your guests if they're not used to hot plates! |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Ebbie Date: 20 Feb 09 - 02:53 PM Speaking of hot pottery, a friend of mine bakes excellent bread on slabs of it. His loaves are round, of course, but he has fewer pans to wash than I do. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 20 Feb 09 - 10:52 PM I'm a potter by trade. I occasionally make a similar chicken roaster, but instead of the phallus thing I make a hollow cylinder. You fill the cylinder with a flavoring agent which cooks into the chicken as it's baking. You can use marinades, spice infused water, even beer. You can actually use the technique without having a special pot. Just pour your marinade into a beer (or similar) can, center the can in a roasting pan, and plop the chicken down on top of the can. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: RangerSteve Date: 21 Feb 09 - 01:27 PM LTS was close. It's a juicer for very tall and skinny lemons and oranges. |
Subject: RE: BS: strange ceramic object From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Feb 09 - 02:24 PM Off-subject, but we like the ceramic pizza oven rounds. The crust does much better if these are used. |
