My wife bought this a few days ago. It took a while and considerable speculation to deduce its use, as seen in the second photo...

the "thing"

Not knowing its size I had guessed it was a ring keeper for jewelry.

arrghhh! Did I just receive an email today that included in the list of cost saving ideas - one aluminum cigar tube filled with angry wasps to use as a vibrator?

Shudder. I did, I did, get that email today.

These things happen in 3s don't they. Wonder what the next one will be.

The "handle" end with the chicken's head should have been a bigger clue... :-)

The chicken head is obfuscation, just to confuse people. :)

To paraphrase Sigi:

"Sometimes a chicken holder is just a chicken holder"

Unless the item is oven-proof, it wouldn't last long as a roasting device. Moreover, the 'dish' base would be too small to collect the juices.

The phallus seems to be too large in diameter for it to serve as a doughnut holder.

Used by old maids to play 'chicken'?

Q-

We have already used it successfully and it made an excellent tender roast chicken.

It is made of the same ceramic material as several of our bean-pots and soup-pots, which we have been using in the oven for years.

It caught the juices perfectly.

I have something similar, made of metal rather than ceramic. It works.

Is it an antique? She might want to sit on it for awhile, and see if it appreciates in value...

Er... I know it's been a long time since I did pottery at school, but surely this ceramic object was fired in a kiln a few hundred degrees hotter than any domestic oven can get?

We use ceramics in the oven often. My wife is a potter.

It's good to allow them to heat along with the oven, but they very rarely crack.

Slightly off-topic, but..

If you're a slow eater, but like your food piping hot, put thick ceramic plates in the oven & serve on those. Careful of burning fingers and tabletop, use thick layers of placemats. They hold heat for a long time, and it's fun to watch the gravy keep bubbling. Yum.

Reminds me of a Marilyn Monroe movie...Some like it Hot...with Tony Perkins. Filmed here in San Duiego, at the Hotel Del Mar.

Tony Perkins was not in that film. Tony Curtis was, however.

That's the alternate-universe version. Tony Perkins stabs Jack Lemmon and escapes in drag.

johnf, thanks for the tip about heating a pottery dish up along with the oven. It's simple, but I never thought of it.

I like hand-made ceramics and have nice little collection in my kitchen.

Speaking of hot pottery, a friend of mine bakes excellent bread on slabs of it. His loaves are round, of course, but he has fewer pans to wash than I do.

I'm a potter by trade. I occasionally make a similar chicken roaster, but instead of the phallus thing I make a hollow cylinder. You fill the cylinder with a flavoring agent which cooks into the chicken as it's baking. You can use marinades, spice infused water, even beer. You can actually use the technique without having a special pot. Just pour your marinade into a beer (or similar) can, center the can in a roasting pan, and plop the chicken down on top of the can.

LTS was close. It's a juicer for very tall and skinny lemons and oranges.

Off-subject, but we like the ceramic pizza oven rounds. The crust does much better if these are used.
