Subject: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 20 Feb 09 - 05:08 AM I think we have a clear run at March. My diary is blank both 22nd and 29th (although lecturing both Mondays). I know of nothing at Kings Arms Upnor, nor Good Intent Strood, nor Crayford Arms Crayford on either weekend. Is there football or other big screen sport worth avoiding on either Sunday? I'll check with the landlord but am tempted to go for the 29th -we can all be grumpy having lost an hour's sleep to the start of European Summer Time... Does anyone know of any local clashes before I go firm on a date? |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 Feb 09 - 08:50 AM Well, us 1954 definitioners call it "Mothering Sunday" and refuse to use the modern, commercial, American nomenclature. I suppose no-one here knows if there are major amounts of moronball on the 52 inch plasma screen on the 29th? I'll check that with the pub. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: VirginiaTam Date: 21 Feb 09 - 09:29 AM In UK, Ireland and Nigeria Mothering Sunday falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. A throwback to 16th century tradition of returning to mother church, later the Victorian practice of permitting girls working as domestics to go home and visit their families. A "Mother's Day" of some sort is practiced in most cultures and recognised officially in many countries. The 2nd of May event which RB denigrated above as an American invention, happens to be celebratred by dozens of cultures and countires. All of which have the same sentiment at heart, which is to honour one's mother. The two dates are annoying to me, as I have to remember to pick up a Mothering Sunday card in March and then remember to send it in May. Involves too flipping much remembering. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 Feb 09 - 01:33 PM It is the nomenclature "Mother's Day" that is American modern. THe correct name "Mothering SUnday" has been part of CofE nomenclature for centuries as has the religious festival so named. I refuse to accept stuff for Father's Day" - an invention of the greetings card industry. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 Feb 09 - 06:15 PM I have checked with the pub - they too know of no oafball requirements, so Sunday the 29th March be it for the next one... The die is cast. |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: GUEST,woodsie Date: 23 Feb 09 - 04:19 AM I agree with you Richard. Most of these "days" are invented to boost sales of cards, chocolats and flowers. The Post Offioe does alright as well. I don't know, with all this Father's Day, Uncles's day, Secretary's Day nonsense, They'll soon be having a chinney sweeps day!! |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: VirginiaTam Date: 23 Feb 09 - 05:37 PM The first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held in July 5 1908 a church in Fairmont, West Virginia, by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Central United Methodist Church of Fairmont. Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in church, and she arranged a tribute for her father in June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance. In the 1860s, companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett (neither of them American companies) began the mass production of greeting cards. Hallmark (known as Hall Brothers) was founded in 1910 and sold only Christmas and Valentines cards. These were already being mass produced in England by Marcus Ward, etc. I don't like the greeting card companies and they way they capitalise on any and every thing they can. But why bash American companies for being enterprising when the English were doing it first? |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: VirginiaTam Date: 28 Feb 09 - 01:01 PM hey Pete - read pun induced grrrooooaaaann here I have been playing Richard's mandolin all afternoon. Arrrggghhhh! I hate the A chord and don't like the sound of the 2 finger A chord. Been learning fingerstyle Boil That Cabbage Down and Cripple Creek. I am still rubbish at the thing. Amazingly, I haven't had this little darling out of the case for some time and only the 1st E string was a tiny bit out of tune. What a charmer. Started learning Sail Away Ladies and Midnight Special on the guitar. So now I am pretty comfy with House of the Rising Sun, Erie Canal, Grey Funnel Line and Ride On. I love being able to play again. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Feb 09 - 01:13 PM Mandolins do not usually have truss rods. None of mine have. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Feb 09 - 01:14 PM Funny, I love that two or one finger (depends on the size of the fingers) A chord - AEAE, neither a major nor a minor (technically a dyad) |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn L Stoke N Kent UK poss 22/9Mar? From: VirginiaTam Date: 01 Mar 09 - 12:23 PM Senor Caballo Muerto I have already discovered that the private rheumatology clinic in Chelmsford is manned by the same monkeys which do the NHS clinic. My care would be no different, except I would be seen more often, for longer and get to pay for the priviledge. The problem is they have not monitored the meds or mitigating conditions as the NICE guidance indicates they should. What I can do now I have found the NICE guidance is tell them their job. At least prevent them from killing me, if not improve my care. re capo - Shouldn't that be instrument's hat? |
