Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the bookstore:

Blue clicky to MSNBC story

They're rewritten "Pride and Prejudice" to include Zombies.

Since I've never ead the original book - will this change the plot drastically??

I just hope they hire actual Zombie actors to portray these roles. I think Steven Seagal might be available.

Pride and Prejudice - The Zombie MUSICAL

My vote goes to Celine Dion for the lead....

Oh my...if this catches on, what will they do with "Little Women" or "Huckleberry Finn"?

My 20-year old daughter was so excited when this was advertised a few months ago pending release, and I ordered it for her Feb. birthday. It arrived last week, and she was thrilled- but I haven't heard how she felt about it.

Jane Austen, esp. "Pride and Prejudice" are "in" at the moment to a degree that must astonish us old jaded English majors and lit lovers- she's cool, she's hip, the college-and-beyond hipsters are crazy about her! This is just an inevitable next step. Kind of like electric guitars at a contra dance, I guess.

Well, it could certainly enhance the pacing ...it's all our PBS plays now when fund-raising or re-running...every, plodding Sunday night...after night...after night...it's already seems like The Night of the Living Dead!

I understand that it's the original novel, word for bloody word, but with zombies added. Brain-sucking zombies, as if the original wasn't brain-sucking enough.

'Not a big leap'

"In the original 'Pride and Prejudice,' there are so many things suited to make it into a horror," Grahame-Smith insists. His book is actually 80 percent original Austen text -- he's simply woven a complementary monster story line into the existing romance. For example, in Austen's work, Grahame-Smith says: "There's a regiment of soldiers camped out in Meryton for apparently no reason. It's not a big leap to say that the regiment is there to burn coffins and kill zombies."

I heard an NPR article about this a few weeks ago. Zombies and vampires and their ilk are acquired tastes. I enjoyed Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, though, and there are aspects of that text that, passed over Jane Austen, might lead to a similar outcome.

SRS
