I put some thought to this piece I just wrote about this sort of CHANGE we are discussing. I hope it makes sense. It does to me. Music and tales are all subject to our creative juices working on them.

I'm sure he wasn't speaking about "me" when he said "Art."

BUT I was a champion liar according to the judges of contests for things like that. Tall tales got taller, sometimes, in my hands, than they ever were before I found 'em. They even found a punchline when I saw that was necessary to have modern ones of us more readily accept it---since people today have, some say 'sadly', preferred it that way. So changes happened. I got Chris through college tellin' 'em on steamboats. I sang and talked into the wind, and came home with the rent.-------------Alchemy, of a sort, me thinks!!

The only ones who care a whit about putting rules on this trad mouth-to-ear transmission scheme, a system that has always been, more or less, the way of the world, are those who are often those gettin' their due money out of it. They've contrived it in order to obtain their due. -- They made it in the first place -- and that's how it ought to be.

But they, graciously, have allowed us to hear their songs. If it is a good tune, we want to use it--maybe with our own tale making up the lyric--or as written--no matter.

Did Hank Snow write the song I called "THE HOBO'S LAST RIDE" when I encountered it like Gollum finding "his" ring? Utah always said it was a trad hobo recitation with no tune. But Hank, like Dylan and all of us, made it a new thing---put it on record, and accepted the cash for doing that---and, I suspect, said "THANK YOU" before he (Hank) found the Gray Havens.

Hank Snow did write "I'm Moving On" (I think) and many other songs---from which he got the cash to purchase all those silly automobiles that made him feel like a sort of a success.

Friends, let's us, simply, enjoy the various celestial choirs--and all the variations!

Whether he knew the word "plagiarism" or not by age 16 (and I would be surprised if he didn't), he surely was aware that there was something not entirely honest about claiming someone else's work as your own.

Did he plagiarize a lot? When this piece was composed he was 16 years old. I don't think I knew what plagiarism was at the age of 16.

Always loved the majority of Hank Snow's work. Had the privilege, together with my buddy Nick Strutt, of opening for him at the Liverpool Empire & the London Palladium back in the '60s. Spent some time socialising with him, too.

In 1964 I was returning by bus from a sojourn to the Library Of Congress' Archive Of American Folk Song and made a stop in Nashville to see the Opry there. Hank Snow was on the show, and him being a vocal hero of mine, I went and tried to talk to the man. He asked where I was from. After I told him I was from
Chicago he told me he was heading out to the Illinois State Fair shortly after the broadcast. So I took a bus to Springfield, Illinois and got to see Hank Snow again that summer.

The song I chose to put on the Utah Phillips memorial 2-CD set was "The Hobo's Last Ride" -- one I had learned from the singing of Hank Snow. It had been recorded by Buell Kazee decades earlier on a 78 rpm record--but it was the tune Hank Snow used that really grabbed my attention. And it is a gread and vivid sad tale that the old song tells.

This discussion got me to thinking of those good old times. Thanks!

Stompin' Tom Connors, who clearly was influenced by Snow in a big way, related an anecdote about his inauspicious first meeting with his idol that relected pretty badly on Snow, in Connors's autobiography Before the Fame. According to Connors, they met a few more times over the years, and it didn't get much better.

Snow apparently had a pretty rough childhood (as did Connors). He set up some sort of a charity for abused kids in his later years.

John Hartford, knowing of my affection for Hank Snow's voice and style, seemed to enjoy telling me something once about Mr. Snow that had me pissed off at both Hank AND John for a good 6 months to a year. Sometimes ya just don't wanna know stuff!
