Ian Mundy died in his sleep in Cheltenham tonight. He was 46. He played with many musicians across the South West, played bass with the Steve Ashley Band in the 1980s, and was a talented guitarist and singer in his own right.
Hereditary blindness meant that his life as a musician became very difficult, and despite the support of his many friends he trod the path of so many into depression, alcoholism and many medical complications. Through all this his spirit shone through; he was kind and generous to all, refused to be a burden to anyone, and was one of the very few people about whom the old cliche was actually true; I never heard him speak a bad word about anyone, nor anyone speak a bad word about him.
I knew him all my life; he was my kid brother, and I'll miss him more than words can ever say.
If you're playing or singing in the next few days, please sing a song and raise a glass for another good man gone.
Tim

Oh Tim. I am so sorry for your loss. My own kid brother was 47 when he died very suddenly in 2007 and it's a shock that I'll never get over. I will always miss him very much as I know that you miss your own brother now.

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts. You are more than welcome to PM me if you like.

Dear Tim

It was with great shock and sadness that I read your message about Ian. My memories of him are of a cheeky, red haired teenager, walking back from the Badgeworth bus stop with him and Liz and my sisters and brother, his "garage band" with the Howell twins (I seem to remember that they played at one of our birthday parties) and then seeing him doing his "one man band" performances in Cheltenham town centre. Please pass on my condolences to your parents and family. I will be dropping a line to Liz in the next few days.

With best wishes

Carol Cordall

Thanks for the kind thoughts Carol. Things are gradually getting better, although my Mum is still very low. I'm collecting a lot of memories of Ian for her, and she'll be very pleased to see this one.
Very best
Tim

Thank you for your reply, Tim. If all our things weren't in storage (we are in the USA temporarily) I could dig out some photos taken on our way home from the school bus one summer day back in the 1970s, all wearing our delightful school uniforms. When we do come home, summer 2011, I'd be happy to do that. I have such lovely memories of your parents' home in Badgeworth, always lively, but somehow also calm, your Mum at the centre of it all, cooking proper food from scratch, kettle on, your Dad popping his head round the door: "Mary..." if he couldn't find things, etc! And your sister has been such a good friend, her home in Leckhampton (some years ago!) always open to people dropping in! Anthony I didn't know so well - he always seemed so grown up from our perspective, but always polite. You are all in my thoughts.
Carol

Realising this is very late, I only found out about Ian's passing in the last few weeks. It was very sad news to hear. I didn't know Ian very well and our paths crossed only occasionally, the last time being back in '87 when I guested with the boxcars at the brewery tap Cheltenham. As mentioned so many times above, more of a loss because of the calibre of the man; a genuinely decent, soulful and likeable human being. It came out in his music too.
