Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Wyrd Sister Date: 26 Jun 09 - 11:14 AM Does anyone else lament the fact that the tournament seems to have become infested with Jackson hysteria? When champions are asked to comment on his death before the tennis I fear relevant issues have become confused. Surely there are enough other outlets for discussion without ALL the media being taken over by this event? |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 26 Jun 09 - 12:07 PM As suggested above, tennis does put quite a strain on the racket arm, thus: men play tennis/ladies play table-tennis (at which, to join Dave and Arnie's army, they wouldn't have the time to grunt!). |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 27 Jun 09 - 04:12 AM Andy Murray, of Scotland, plays Viktor Troicki, of Serbia, today - don't no much about the latter player..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: s&r Date: 27 Jun 09 - 09:38 AM I think only women should be allowed to play football because men are physiologically hampered by the scrotum. A load of what you say????? Stu |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 29 Jun 09 - 05:42 PM What a match. Well played Andy Murray. You Scots can feel proud. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 30 Jun 09 - 05:00 AM Agreed, The Villan, and the new roof and lights of The All England...Club worked well, I felt. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Dave Hanson Date: 30 Jun 09 - 06:32 AM They had to use the new roof last night, three drops of rain and the players had to run for cover, is it true that rain causes fatal injuries to tennis players, or are they all fairies ? Dave H |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 30 Jun 09 - 09:26 AM Maybe the men could or should wear skirts as well. I suppose Andy Murray should wear a kilt. |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Jack Blandiver Date: 30 Jun 09 - 04:04 PM I've hated Wimbledon since childhood because it fucks up the telly schedules; as a kid I used to cry, as an adult I line up religious statuary along the back wall and get my air rifle out. The sooner the BBC start a designated sports channel the better it will be for the stress levels of the nation. |

Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: gnu Date: 01 Jul 09 - 01:15 PM Yeah... fuckin piss me off! I started a "small" job and ran into a bunch of snags. Figured I would still catch some of it. Got back to the TV just in time to see them walking off the court. Grrrrrrrr! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 01 Jul 09 - 01:23 PM You can't beat bad luck, Gnu! - the commentators commented on how quick the players were between points, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 02 Jul 09 - 04:43 AM That reminds me of the time I got up early in the morning to watch the rematch of Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston for the world heavyweight boxing championship. I had a bet with somebody at work, that Liston would beat Clay. The bet was £15 which was a lot of dosh in those days, reducing by a £1 for each round. Anyway, I got up, put the telly on and the match was just starting. I had put the kettle on for a cup of tea. When I came back with my tea, the match was over as Clay knocked Liston out in the first round. So not only did I lose my sleep, but lost £15 and never saw the match live. I never forgave Clay for that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Jul 09 - 11:17 AM Good job Serena Williams, my Amazon! I left her battling away mid-match to get some work done, confident I would come back downstairs to see she had won her SF match. Of course she did. Every set a hardfought tiebreaker. She works hard for the money! :~) ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: s&r Date: 02 Jul 09 - 12:13 PM But don't you think she would be more suited to the delicate niceties of table-tennis? Stu |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Jul 09 - 12:17 PM Tennis is a masculine game that the Williams sisters usually win at - unless they are injured by it. Back to the mens, and the semis: Which Andy will win..? And which German speaker will win..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Bonzo3legs Date: 03 Jul 09 - 06:20 AM Tennis is a very silly game with an equally silly scoring system. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 03 Jul 09 - 08:03 AM The scoring system is, despite the lines below, a strength of tennis, I think, Bonzo - because it produces numerous "big points" in a match. (And that's probably also why table-tennis games are now first to 11 rather than 21 - more big points.) Poem 96 of 230: PARADIGMS "Thirty-all" is, in effect, "deuce"; Nobody has seen an "atom": An atom remains a model; "Thirty-all" an umpire's call. "They we just simply had to bomb"; And there are other given "truths"... If we humans evolved from apes, Why on earth are there living apes? From http://walkaboutsverse.sitegoz.com (e-scroll) Or http://blogs.myspace.com/walkaboutsverse (e-book) PS: I also think Tim Henman has quickly turned himself into a fine tennis commentator - as well as a near-scratch golfer! |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: The Sandman Date: 03 Jul 09 - 02:05 PM so has Murray lost?I saw most of the match, but viewing stops at 7 pm |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rasener Date: 03 Jul 09 - 02:41 PM Yes he did lose. 6-4 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-5) Roddicks serving was top class and IMHO, that was the difference. I thought Murray played really well, and I always got the feeling he could pull it back and win. He is a born fighter and at 22, I don't think it will be long before he wins Wimbledon |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: The Sandman Date: 03 Jul 09 - 03:26 PM yes he played very well,he must be the best scottish player for 50 years, and the best from GB,for 50 years. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Rifleman (inactive) Date: 03 Jul 09 - 03:34 PM A quote from Major Eustace Drummond - Bugle (retd) "Venus & Serena Williams in the women's final, you say? bloody Americans aren't they... Bah! when I was a lad, Wimbledon was thoroughly English don't ya know...What has the world come to, letting foreigners play at centre court...blah, blah..." |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 04 Jul 09 - 05:42 AM After the match, Roddick behaved like a man who'd achieved his goal, it seemed to me, and I'll be very surprised if Federa doesn't win his 15th major tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Jul 09 - 06:42 AM I was disappointed with the match. Murray has glimpses of tennis genius but then seems to tail off whereas Roddick was consistently good throughout and deserved his win. |
Subject: RE: BS: Musing On Wimbledon From: Arnie Date: 04 Jul 09 - 06:50 AM If it's true that centre-court tickets for the men's final were changing hands at £8,000 upwards because of the Murray factor, then there will be a lot of wealthy but disappointed spectators at Wimbledon tomorrow. Serves them right for paying such inflated prices to the touts! |
