Subject: Thought for the Day (July 13) From: Peter T. Date: 13 Jul 99 - 10:10 AM "People are always saying we live in the most materialistic culture in history. This is not true. We live in the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about material objects, we wouldn't treat them the way we do, using them up and throwing them away. No: what we are addicted to is the dreams associated with the objects, and when the objects cannot satisfy them, we seek out another dream. Look at television commercials: do you see objects? No. What you see are dreams, and the even more tantalizing glimpse of a magical glistening dream object beckoning from behind the mirage." --Pasanchon (Korean Buddhist). |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (July 13) From: Neil Lowe Date: 13 Jul 99 - 10:50 AM ".....to sleep, perchance to dream." Sounds like Pasanchon and Shakespeare knew all about people chasing dreams, how reality never measured up. Most people need an envelope to push against; it's part of a desire to recreate the womb. If they succeed, then it's time to get a new envelope. A goal achieved is a goal set too low. The TV brains are geniuses at marketing and selling dreams to consumers. No wonder it's called programming. The episode or sitcom is merely filler between commercials. The commercials are the most interesting aspect of TV now. They are better produced, with more intelligence and creativity concentrated in 30 seconds in most cases, than the program which they are designed to interrupt. Some of the best TV I've seen has come from commercials. Neil Lowe - raised and nurtured by the Electronic Babysitter... |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (July 13) From: katlaughing Date: 13 Jul 99 - 11:40 AM Television hangs on the questionable theory that whatever happens anywhere should be sensed everywhere. If everyone is going to be able to see everything, in the long run all sights may lose whatever rarity value they once possessed, and it may well turn out that people, being able to see and hear practically everything, will be specially interested in almost nothing." - E.
