Mudcatters in the UK may be interested to know that the Spooky Men, (as fine a collection of Antipodean Y-Chromosome carriers that ever wielded power tools) are coming to the UK from mid July for a tour of nearly 2 months and a mad number of gig dates whilst dashing around the countries of these isles. Here is a link to their gig list.

So if you love good choral singing with a dollop of wit and wierdness, go out there and get yerself a ticket!

Meant to add "highly recommended".
I saw them on home ground in Katoomba, Blue Mountains and was duly impressed. Very funny, great music, they already have a huge following in the UK.

Looking forward to hearing them at Bexhill-on-Sea (yes, really) on 31st. July. It would be nice to think that the ghost of the Phantom Batter Pudding Thrower is still about.

Could someone who's been to one of their Sing Like A Bloke workshops tell me what it was like?

Valmai (Lewes)

You haven't lived till you've grown a beard (if you want to) with the Spooky Men. The workshops are brilliant.

They are doing a massed workshop, the Big Spooky Thing, at Sidmouth on Wednesday 5 August in the Ham Marquee for up to 1000 people!

They are also doing a bijou gig at the Methodist church which focuses on the Georgian songs and the slightly more serious side to their repertoire.

I took part in one of their Sing Like A Bloke workshops here in Australia. It was fun. They took us through one of the Georgian pieces they do, in three parts, a good mix of jokes and serious instruction. About a third of the participants were of the non-bloke persuasion.

Many thanks for the comments. I would have replied earlier but I've had my hands full doing admin for a harp workshop with Bonnie Shaljean this weekend.

Very interesting ..... do people with lumps on their chests have to wear false beards to take part?

No, those devoid of Y-chromosomes took part without any form of disguise.

In the early years of the Chorale, they would occasionally do a routine where a couple of women, wearing false beards, would try to infiltrate the group and join them on stage, but they would be foiled by a "beard check." They haven't done that routine in years.

Are you our Gerry in the Toongabbie Music Club ? If so, you could always sing like a bloke !

I saw the Spooky Men at the Australian National Folk Festival in Canberra...wonderful

AD in Oz

Funny old country Australia...we have Molly Meldrum, Shirley in Skyhooks and Dame Edna Everidge. Oh well it keeps us off the streets.

Workshop at Warwick was very well done, and the final concert brilliant as ever. Worth going a long way to see them.

That was your daughter?

Very enterprising. I tried with Dave Allton to do some signing - but despite the beard, she was not fooled. Dave's brummy accent gave it away.

Julian Pirog, Bristol

Saw them in Bristol, my home city. I sing with Bristol gasworks choir. I have not laughed so much for many years, the somgs were fantastic, the delivery spot on for both irony and comedy and I now want to be a spookyman, I will not be able to feel whole until I have at least done a workshop with them which I shall duly be doing on 8 th Aug when they agin grace Bristol.
Brilliant, witty and a class act
