I agree with the posters who've said it's the small dogs that are the most problem. I would group these under the heading of "ratweilers".

"ratweilers"... hahahahaa... good one.

Puppies and owners who lack knowledge. Yup... so easy to teach a puppy how to be a dog. So hard to teach owners how to teach puppies. Such a shame for the poor puppies.

I really don't know why such a simple task cannot be taught to human pups in grade school.

I am beginning to think the problem is not even the owners but the lack of law enforcement. mg

and another thing is why is it that dog owners always say to their dogs 'come to your MUMMY OR COME TO DADDY' and when they visit their friends house and their friend has a dog and start sniffing their crouch, their friend says' yes it must smell my dog' the mind wonders...

Goatfell, its because dogs are sexual role models for many humans although most humans are simply envious of what dogs do. For instance, do you know why a dog licks it's balls? Because it can! And think how great the world would be if you could whiff the crotch of anyone you chose! Or what about some wild passionate sex anywhere and anytime the spirit moved you? Well, except for the part where someone threw a bucket of cold water on your ass...............

Anyway, just think about it.

Blimey, how my moods are going up and down ...

The arm gets gradually better, I can play 'tina for about 15 minutes before it stiffens up too much, and I feel like going out and hugging a dog.

Olddude practically calls me a racist and I feel right down again, so I feel like nominating a pile of dead dogs for the 4th plinth.

Guest mg: 'lack of law enforcement'. Quite. I now hear (from the postman) that the Post Office complained about this dog about a year ago and there was supposed to be a court case. Obviously nothing happened, so doggie lives to bite again. And presumably again. Unfortunately to enforce a law you have to have proof. In the absence of witnesses, the word of a shocked and exhausted victim wouldn't carry much weight in a court of law when it comes to actually identifying the dog.

G-Force, I didn't see anything racist about your remark. You made no reference to race at all.   I'd be ticked off too by somebody who had a dog that was prone to bite and didn't keep it under control at all times. I think we all realize that your "I hate dogs" comment was just venting - understandable as you were shaken up and in pain. I'm very fond of dogs - but not when they bite!

On a lengthy list of local bye-laws, after some clauses about dog-owners being obliged to lift their dogs' dung in plastic bags and deposit it somewhere hygenically, I noticed that exceptions were made for Guide-Dogs for the Blind. This set me wondering. Are such dogs trained to defecate only "at home"? Actually, my first thought was, "are blind/visually impaired people able to locate any dung by smell, or touch, since they obviously can't see exactly where their Guide-Dog has performed?" It would certainly be a bit odd for a blind person, complete with Guide-Dog, to be accompanied by a sighted companion whose specific purpose was to be a shit-lifter...

I can see why they would make an exception for guide dogs. It would be difficult for a blind person to clean up after the dog. And there aren't usually a huge number of them around, so it wouldn't be such a big deal.

The blind man's seeing eye dog pissed on the blind man's shoe.
The blind man said "Here Rover, here's a piece of beef for you."
His wife said "Don't reward him, you can't just let that pass."
The blind man said "I gotta find his mouth"
"So I can kick him in the ass."

G-Force,
this old dude does apologize, I do get a bit spirited at times and I do understand your frustration about being bitten, that is no fun ..
I am glad you are feeling better.

Olddude, you are an okay guy.

So, G-force, you are having quite the ordeal. Have you given any thought to what special treats you will give yourself to make up for it?

When a child is sick or hurt, people give presents or take it on nice outings to make up for it. You are no longer a child, and you must take responsibility for giving yourself your own treats. (Joke!)

Are there any butterfly houses in your country? Perhaps a visit to a butterfly house, followed by a nice meal in a special restaurant. When you are feeling up to it, of course.

I'm glad to hear you can play music again.

No treats unless he can self-stack, course and point, retrieve, and come to heel.

I saw today an example of a person hating dogs that moved me to wish violence upon a woman.

BG were in a pub and the landlady has a wholly adorable boxer (mostly red) that is regrettably deaf - but has not an ounce of vice in it.

Obviously the dog is used to pub customers feeding it crisps and so on.

It was "working the room" (for this purpose, and indeed much to the delight of most customers who were making a fuss of it) and approached the woman in question. She reached for her small handbag - an almost dead ringer for a crisp packet - and the dog put its head forward expecting a treat. She started yelling and violently pushing the dog away and hit it on the head (fortunately not hard) twice.

The look in the dog's eyes was simply tragic.

It probably isn't good for the dog to have crisps, but I felt sad thinking of the poor fellow being treated like that.

Thanks olddude, you just made my day.

I guess I'm OK now, although the arm is still a bit uncomfortable and I get bouts of tiredness hit me unexpectedly.

Me and my good lady (who was almost as traumatised as I was, and has been running around after me, driving me to the hospital 5 times so far) have been planning just the kind of treats you've all been mentioning.

I think this thread has run its course now, I probably won't post again.

Put this in writing and give copies to the paper, and the mayor and the Post Office.

The first person will probably not get a response. The second they might notice. It will be the third one that starts to get results. You never know where you are in the line so report each and every thing.

And I don't agree that dogs who bite should be controlled. I think they either should be in a paid kennel, where owners can visit and security is water-tight, or they should have operations that make them forever docile, or they should be put down. Period. mg

Here is a snipit from a local paper for an island of the west coast of Scotland called Arran, and the island of the Arran Coast.
your respniable dog owner.
Dog kills rare sheep on Holy Isle
Report by Howard Driver
Published: 17 July, 2009
A rare breed sheep has been killed on Holy Isle by a dog from a private boat.

Holy Isle is a spiritual retreat centre owned by the Budhhists of Samye Ling, Eskdalemuir, and dogs are expressly forbidden ashore on the island.

Local administrator Adam Rose said: 'Visitors from a private boat brought a dog onto the island, lost control of it and it chased one of the wild Soay sheep into the sea and drowned it.

'It was horrible. A lot of other sheep scattered and disappeared and the owners finally restrained the dog. It was an Old English sheepdog and just a puppy, but he was an urban dog and probably not used to sheep.

'I know that a farmer would simply have shot the dog.

'We very much welcome day visitors and had more than 1,000 on the island last year. But to help us protect our rare wildlife and to respect the Holy Isle as a spiritual retreat we ask visitors not to bring dogs ashore.'

Tom Sheldon runs the Holy Isle ferry from Lamlash pier. He said: 'I know the people in that boat. They are regulars and they can be quite arrogant. No-one would get on board my ferry with a dog. The animals over there are just not used to dogs.'

Adam added: 'The issue is basically with people who come to Holy Isle with private boats. Our retreat leader Lama Yeshe has done a lot to open up the island to the public. We meet every boat that comes to the jetty and welcome them to our spiritual retreat.

'I will be writing a letter to every yacht club and marina on the Clyde to inform them that dogs are not allowed ashore here.'

Last year two dogs were shot by a Northend farmer after worrying sheep in Sannox.

Two months ago the Banner reported on a case of six sheep being killed by a pet dog in a field at Springbank, Brodick.
